The Savage Divide is one of the six regions of Appalachia.[1]
Background
Before the Great War, these high mountains of Appalachia were home to ski resorts, bed-and-breakfasts, and cabins available to rent by eager tourists. Among the most popular was Top of the World, originally an enormous ski lift station, complete with shops and restaurants at its peak.
Farther north and nestled in the mountains is a spiritual retreat center known as the Palace of the Winding Path. Its unique architecture stands in stark contrast to the rest of Appalachia's mountains. Trading rumors of the goings-on inside those fenced-in walls was a popular pre-War pastime.
After the war, the Monongahela National Forest now became known known to survivors as the Savage Divide. The mountainous area whose became a patchwork landscape of abandoned resorts and scenic retreats, home to mole miners and super mutants. It became the base of operations for Appalachia's raider factions after the brutal winter of 2077/2078 reduced the affluent tourists and guests to cutthroats and cannibals, doing whatever necessary to survive.
Characteristics
The name given to the region comes from the tall mountains creating a large wall between the regions of the Forest, Ash Heap and Toxic Valley on the west side, and the regions of the Mire and Cranberry Bog on the east side.
Layout
The Savage Divide extends all the way from the north to the south of the Appalachia map. It divides both the Mire (to the northeast) and the Cranberry Bog (to the southeast) from the Toxic Valley (to the northwest), the Forest (to the west), and the Ash Heap (to the southwest). Most of its train stations are occupied by raider vendorbots.

When visiting Savage Divide, remember the ground is more unforgiving than in other regions, so stay on paths or roads to prevent stepping off a sheer drop! This region splits West Virginia between the west and east; the mountainous topography stretches north to south across the map and consists mainly of steep slopes, large craggy rock scree, forests, and some idyllic spots with incredible views. There are many interesting and unique dwellings to chance upon, ranging from a temple of enlightenment close to the northern border, to a house filled with pumpkins, to caves where the strangest of cryptids reside. Slap bang in the middle of the map is the "giant red thumbtack" known as Top of the World; as you'd expect, this observation tower and hifalutin shopping mall that once catered to the well-to-do skiers at Pleasant Valley is now a rusting landmark with which to orient yourself. Those seeking peace and quiet might do well to visit the array of large radio astronomy structures, including a massive dish in the mountains, once part of the United States National Radio Quiet Zone.
Also take time to see how the other half lived by checking out the still-manicured grounds of The Whitespring, a sprawling hotel complex with more than a few secrets under its foundations. Subterranean secrets don't end there either; Savage Divide is home to three initially unassuming "sites" (Alpha, Bravo, and Charlie). In reality, this is a vast military complex where nuclear missiles can be launched from, providing you have the mental mettle to solve the cypher involved!"
