一般信息[]
阅读一本技能书将永久提升相应的技能3点（带有心领神会辅助能力加4点）。除了少数例外，技能书与辐射3中的相同。新加入的生存技能使用废土生存指南作为技能书。辐射3中的美军:30个喷火器使用秘诀已经被移除，自从大型枪械技能被分解成其他技能。一旦添加到库存中，它们就会出现在玩家的哔哔小子菜单的"援助"部分。
每本技能书平均有4本，在基础游戏中总共有52本。死钱增加了两本邓恩电子学和一本其他技能书，除了废土生存指南。赤诚之心引入workbench crate，一个随机战利品的容器，有可能包含各种技能书籍，但没有静态书籍位置。旧世蓝调增加了两本中国陆军:特种作战训练手册和一本科学大全，此外还有一个新机制，使玩家能够在工作平台上使用25本空白书本，两管万能胶和适当的配方来制作每本书的单一副本。最后，孤独之路添加了每个技能书的额外副本。这给了总共94本技能书（81个在静态位置，13个在工作台创建）和一个机会在赤诚之心的技能书。

- 通过阅读所有可获得的技能书（不包括在赤诚之心中作为随机战利品找到的那些）所获得的总技能点，以及心领神会辅助能力， PC将获得总共376个技能点（没有它的情况下为282个）。在赤诚之心中找到的工作台箱技能书可以提供额外的64个技能点，如果每个箱子最多只能提供4本技能书，那么有了综合能力总共可以提供440个技能点（没有心领神会则为330个）。
- 虽然可以获得最多16本（非战斗相关的）技能书，但可能性非常低（参见工作台箱页面）；4本技能书的几率只有0.16%，即2/1125。平均需要390次装填才能有超过50%的机会从一个箱子中制造出4本技能书)。更现实的是总共8本技能书。理论上，大约每5次存档/读档1次（在进入洞穴之前），或者使用控制台，选择它并输入resetinventory，应该会产生2个随机技能书。如果玩家拥有心领神会辅助能力，它仍然足以让所有技能达到最大值。
- 可以使用技能书将技能等级提高到100以上。该值没有显示，除了抵消SPECIAL属性惩罚的目的外，超过100点的技能不会有任何好处。例如，如果一个角色的天然耐力为4，然后通过升级将生存技能提升到100，然后在某个时候遭受轻微的辐射中毒（-1耐力）和轻微脱水（-1耐力），导致耐力总分为负2，那么生存技能必然会降低到96。如果角色在生存技能通过升级提升到100之后阅读了废土生存指南技能书，那么即使有SPECIAL点惩罚，生存技能也会显示为99或100(带有心领神会)。
