A small disagreement. They objected to my hobby of collecting their heads.— Pickman

Pickman is a serial killer and self-described artist living in Pickman Gallery in the Commonwealth.

Background[]

Pickman is a man with a strong dislike for raiders, killing many in Boston's North End and in locations across the Commonwealth. From his decaying row house he tortures and kills raiders, capturing their horrified expressions into paintings made from blood.[1][Non-game 1]

Pickman is known to taunt and lure raiders to his hideout, but has recently bitten off more than he can chew. The Sole Survivor first meets Pickman deep within the ancient tunnels connected to Pickman Gallery while he is being assailed by Slab, a raider who wants to take revenge on Pickman for killing his men.

While extremely disturbed, casually mentioning his hobby of collecting the raiders' heads, he presents himself as collected and polite to the Sole Survivor.[2][3] He is appreciative of the Sole Survivor's help and is happy to reward them for their assistance, but maintains that he works alone.[4]

Other interactions[]

If the Sole Survivor kills Slab and the two raiders on either side of Pickman and then speaks to him after, they are rewarded with Pickman's key, which opens a safe on the ground floor of the Gallery, containing Pickman's Blade and Pickman's thank you note. If the Sole Survivor opts to kill him or let the raiders kill him, his corpse can still be looted, but the note will not be in the safe.

Notes[]

  • It is possible to first learn of Pickman by looting a murdered raider previously killed near Pickman gallery, as well as a random encounter of bodies placed elsewhere in the Commonwealth. His calling card is in the form of a note and left in the raider's inventory. Reading it shows him taunting other raiders and attempting to make them come to Pickman Gallery and depicts an image of a heart drawn in blood, presumably of said raiders. If the player character hasn't discovered Pickman Gallery yet, opening the note will mark its location on the map and give them a misc objective to investigate the location.
  • Most companions (except for Cait, Piper and Strong) dislike accepting Pickman's Gift.
  • Alongside killing him to get the key, the Sole Survivor will not receive the thank you note if they have not spoken to Pickman before looting the safe.
  • No matter what the Sole Survivor says to Pickman after saving his life, he will still hand over the key and begin Pickman's Gift.
  • After being saved from the raiders, Pickman will fondly nickname the Sole Survivor "Killer."
  • Pickman's Blade can be picked by looting the safe behind the painting he directs the player character to. If they grab the knife and go back, the thank you letter still appears.
  • In Fallout Shelter Online, Lorenzo Cabot mentions that a visit with Pickman inspired him to investigate the Dunwich Borers mine, thinking it had similarities to what he discovered in the Rub' al Khali centuries ago.

Appearances[]

Behind the scenes[]

Pickman's name and premise is an allusion to Lovecraft's 1926 novel Pickman's Model, which concerns a Bostonian painter who creates horrifying images. Like Pickman in Fallout 4, Richard Upton Pickman is an artist who uses real-world models to paint horrifying artwork. His home in Boston's North End contains a cellar that he used as a studio, which is connected to an ancient network of tunnels that early residents of the neighborhood used to get between houses.

A prolific serial killer stalks the alleys of North End and has recently been cornered in his lair by his prey of choice: Raiders. The rotting hulk of a row house Pickman calls home was chosen for its access to ancient subterrenean smuggler tunnels beneath North End. He displays pictures of his victims on the walls.

Inside the dwelling, his blood-splattered daubing and corpse sculptures show the type of lunatic Pickman is. He has left a message to Jack in the front room and Pickman's Calling Card on many corpses. Fight your way to the end of the smuggler's sewer.
