The Target[]
Lucy MacLean encounters Ma June sometime after leaving Vault 33. Lucy points out that Ma June has Vault-Tec Corporation items in her store and assumes Ma June does business with criminals, mentioning she is searching for one. Ma June is amused that Lucy is a real Vault dweller and laughs in her face. Ma June's attitude hardens when Lucy mentions Lee Moldaver and orders her to leave immediately. Lucy asserts she wants to save her father, but Ma June is skeptical that Lucy will live long on the surface. Lucy mentions the Vaults' mission to save America, but Ma June denounces the Vaults as "a hole in the ground for rich folks to hide in while the rest of the world burned." Ma June says, "fuck the Vaults," and gives Lucy the finger. Lucy then leaves, despondent.
Outside her store with Lucy and Wilzig
Ma June notes Siggi Wilzig speaking to Lucy outside. She asks Wilzig if he is Wilzig and tells him to get inside, while she orders Lucy to go. The Ghoul arrives since he is tracking Wilzig for a bounty. Ma June reacts with suspicion towards the Ghoul, telling him that he is not welcome in Filly as his kind is not welcome. Ma June mentions she herself has been paid a lot of caps to transport Wilzig to his next destination. The Ghoul shoots Wilzig's leg, making Ma June shout she has 1000 caps for whoever kills the Ghoul, but no one will get anything if she kills him first. Ma June shoots the Ghoul, but he shoots her in the knee. When Lucy stands up for Wilzig, Ma June finds Lucy's articulate speech ridiculous. Maximus arrives to fight the Ghoul, letting Lucy bandage Ma June's knee.
In the back room, Ma June tries to assist Wilzig with his leg injury by putting on a makeshift leg. She asks Lucy to take Wilzig to her client, who happens to be Moldaver and says Lucy can bargain with Moldaver with Wilzig. Ma June puts Moldaver's location into Lucy's Pip-Boy and tries to motivate Lucy before she leaves.
It is unknown what happened to Ma June and Barv after Lucy and Wilzig left, as they appear to have deserted their storefront when the Ghoul entered looking for clues. Whether they returned or not is also unclear as Filly is later shown to have been taken over by the Brotherhood of Steel, with the sundries shop in particular being turned into an armory.
Personality[]
Ma June is a stern and tough woman who does not establish her position by being a pushover. She will trade with anyone as long as they have the caps. However, she is also willing to threaten people with a gun if they betray her.[1]
She shares the common disdainful opinion of the Vaults and their inhabitants like most wastelanders, viewing Vault dwellers as naive idealists detached from the reality of the wasteland due to their isolation as well as, in her eyes, a living reminder that the underground bunkers were only ever intended to ensure the survival of the American upper class at the expense of everyone else on the day the bombs dropped. She also has a prejudice against ghouls, openly warning the Ghoul that "his kind" are not welcome in Filly when the bounty hunter comes for his target.
