|“||In our eyes, defeat is unacceptable because we're fighting for the future of mankind. Our rallying cry is more powerful than any weapon you could ever carry. Remember that.||”|
—Paladin Danse explaining the meaning behind "Ad Victoriam".
Originally founded by in 2255 by the reformist Elder Owyn Lyons. Their headquarters is the Citadel, an imposing fortress built beneath the ruins of the Pentagon on the edge of what used to be Washington, D.C.. As of 2287, the Eastern division is under the command of Elder Arthur Maxson, the supreme commander of the East Coast Brotherhood of Steel and the last living descendant of the Maxson family line. As the Brotherhood's position in the West declines, the once-moribund Lyons' Brotherhood of Steel has been reformed into a major military force in under a decade, able to project their power and influence all along the Eastern Seaboard thanks to the drive and tenacity of its young elder.
During the late Lyons years, the chapter self-styled itself as the Lyons' Brotherhood of Steel. The name was dropped after reunification with the West.
The intent of the Scourge remains unclear, but many in the Brotherhood note that it was a marked change in the way the Brotherhood operates. Additionally, it is known that something was recovered from The Pitt during the Scourge, although to date it would seem that only Elder Lyons knows what it was. At the same time, he abandoned the Brotherhood and its teachings, recognizing the inherent failure of the unsustainable, scavenger nature of the Brotherhood's ways.
Despite the Brotherhood's success with Project Purity and the war against the Enclave, the organization continued to struggle. 2283年，年僅十六歲的亞瑟‧麥克森was appointed elder at age 16, the youngest in Brotherhood history, after展現了exceptional skill as a capable warrior and 外交能力 by defeating the super mutant leader Shepherd and 與兄弟會放逐者破冰，最後將他們收編回鋼鐵兄弟會。
By 2287, the East Coast Brotherhood had established contact with Lost Hills and actively received support from the west.
Several members of the Brotherhood had their own projects to progress within while access to the Institute was researched. Proctor Quinlan required technical documents found in pre-War ruins that might have had information pertaining to important technology, weapon schematics, or military bunkers left behind in the war. Senior Scribe Neriah required blood samples from heavily irradiated species such as feral ghouls, yao guai, and super mutants. Even after Danse is banished from the Brotherhood, Recon Squad Gladius still needed to complete their duties in Cambridge Police Station, such as cataloging tech or cleansing an area of radiation infected beings.
In plotting a course to find, access, and destroy the Institute, Elder Maxson determined the first initiative to be repairing Liberty Prime back to working order, assisted by Dr. Madison Li. After securing ammunition from the sentinel site and a beryllium agitator, the operational robot clears the way for the Brotherhood to infiltrate and subsequently attempt to destroy the Institute once and for all.
However, the eastern chapter is shown to be more lenient about outsiders possessing energy weapons.
With all the Brotherhood's recent success including the defeat of the Enclave and subsequent acquisition of all Enclave technology, including all power armor and weapons, and the reintegration of the Brotherhood Outcasts, the East Coast division of the Brotherhood is at the zenith of its power. They have access to Vertibirds, power armor, and energy weapons as well as the capability to develop more of these according to Paladin Danse. They also possess a new and improved, rebuilt Liberty Prime, as well as the Prydwen, a colossal airship developed by the Brotherhood, which Paladin Danse claims houses enough troops and resources to "push a full scale offensive" and is capable of "mobilizing the whole division according to Arthur Maxson. Thanks to the Brotherhood maintaining their policy of open recruitment, their numbers on the east coast have vastly increased. Evidenced by the Brotherhood holding power and influence all across the eastern seaboard.
In light of their recently acquired fleet of Vertibirds, the Brotherhood division under Elder Maxson now frequently conducts air assault operations within the Commonwealth, the foremost examples of which can be experienced in the missions Spoils of War and The Battle of Bunker Hill. Patrol and shock teams are frequently dropped into the Commonwealth to secure objectives deemed valuable to the Brotherhood or to eliminate hostile threats from an area.
The Capital Wasteland detachment utilizes a slightly different system than the original Brotherhood out west, for instance, the Paladins are not a separate caste but a rank. (Ranks are sorted Lowest-Highest/Bottom-Top)
里昂的驕傲 - The "Pride", as it was known colloquially, was an elite unit of the east coast division of the Brotherhood of Steel under Elder Lyons. The Pride was led by the then-sentinel Sarah Lyons, daughter of the erstwhile Elder Owyn Lyons. Members of the Pride were hand picked, and represented the best that the Brotherhood had to offer. They wear the same T-45d power armor as the rest of the Brotherhood except for the Lyon's Pride insignia on the shoulder pauldron instead of the Brotherhood insignia. As of 2287 there is little to no information on the unit or its fate.
T-60,but in order to maintain a level of flexibility in their operations。Paladin Danse states that the Brotherhood create their T-60 suits from scratch based on pre-War designs.
With the destruction of the Enclave, The Brotherhood of Steel East Coast division far surpasses their West Coast counterparts in terms of numbers and technology Although there is evidence on the Prydwen terminals that they may be operating on the surface again once more.
- The East Coast Brotherhood is the only chapter/division that is mentioned as currently having a functioning air force. Although in the past there have been airships like the Prydwen built to explore eastward, the Brotherhood has not had a fighting force of Vertibirds shown or mentioned in a game until Fallout 4.
- A Brotherhood of Steel Knight aboard the Prydwen may directly reference the Capital Wasteland, saying "If you think the Commonwealth is bad, you should see the Capital Wasteland."
The East Coast Brotherhood of Steel appears in Fallout 3, its add-on Broken Steel, Fallout 4 and its add-on Far Harbor. They are also mentioned in the other Fallout 3 add-ons, Operation: Anchorage, The Pitt and Mothership Zeta, and they are again mentioned in Fallout: New Vegas.
Behind the scenes
The East Coast Brotherhood of Steel has some similarities and differences with other Fallout games:
- External recruitment is also present in Fallout Tactics, and for the "Texas Expedition" in Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel.
- The Brotherhood Outcasts, renegades deserted from the newly established Eastern Brotherhood of Steel division, are similar to the Circle of Steel in Van Buren.
- The Sole Survivor: "Who's Elder Maxson?"
Danse: " "
- The Lone Wanderer: "Who are you people?"
Anne Marie Morgan: "We call ourselves the Outcasts, and we collect technology to preserve it from tribals and idiot locals. And before you ask, we were cast out from that company of zeroes who call themselves Lyons' Brotherhood of Steel. Way we figure it, if traitors think we're too harsh in following orders, we're probably doing something right."
(Anne Marie Morgan's dialogue)
- The Lone Wanderer: "Why is that a sore subject?"
Reginald Rothchild: "Much has happened in the 23 years since we left the west coast. Our mission has changed in that time. The changes have not all been pleasant, and have had significant repercussions."
(Reginald Rothchild's dialogue)
- The Lone Wanderer: "So what's your long-term plan for dealing with the Brotherhood?"
Henry Casdin: "The Brotherhood came out here to recover technology from the eastern cities and bases. If Lyons won't do it, then we will. "
(Henry Casdin's dialogue)
- The Lone Wanderer: "Why are you here in the Capital Wasteland?"
Owyn Lyons: "Our orders were, and are, to acquire any and all advanced technology. And we have, to the best of our abilities. But when I realized the extent of the Super Mutant threat, I felt it was my responsibility to aid the people in their struggle against them. Unfortunately, my superiors back west disagree with my assessment of the situation. They feel I've grown too "attached" to the local populace. And they're right. In any event, the Enclave's arrival changes everything..."
(Owyn Lyons' dialogue)
- Fallout 3 Official Game Guide Game of the Year Edition p.43-44:
Following the Great War, survivors established a settlement on the remains of a city at the confluence of rivers. The rivers seem to provide a clear resource, and enough of the city was cleared by the bombs that a new settlement could be established. However, radioactive material and unidentified mutagens mixed into the groundwater, causing it to become slightly mutagenic and highly carcinogenic. As a result, the people in the new settlement began to change ever so slightly.
The changes were subtle, not nearly to the degree of the Super Mutants or the various Wasteland creatures, but over the next 140 years, it became undeniable that something was affecting the people of The Pitt. Starting from the first few years, children were often born with strange growths or extra vestigial limbs. The mutations never went far beyond the occasional hunchback or cleft palate, but it wasn't long before the vast majority of the residents of The Pitt developed some sort of physical deformity in their lifetimes. Although many children were born "clean," the older they got, the more likely that a problem would develop.
The most disturbing change that the environment caused was not nearly as noticeable as the physical deformities. The infected water and poisoned sky began to cause neurological damage to those exposed to it. People became more hostile, violent, and short-tempered; they became known as "Wildmen." Their emotions became out of control, and their actions often teetered on primal. In severe cases, mutated humans devolved into hunched, savage beasts nicknamed "Trogs." Over the first 50 years, The Pitt quickly degenerated into a dangerous den of murderers and rapists; even cannibalism was not uncommon. The only loyalty was in strength, and the only organization was between those who were strong enough to control others and those who were controlled.
Rumors of the horrors of The Pitt spread throughout the Wasteland, and all travelers knew to avoid it at all costs. However, The Pitt became one of the most self-sufficient communities in the Wastes. Granted, their self-sufficiency relied on the citizens occasionally eating one another, but they functioned without trade or export.
In 2042 , Star Paladin Lyons of the Brotherhood of Steel led the Scourge, a large-scale military action that wiped out nearly the entire population of The Pitt. In a single night, the Brotherhood swept through the city, eliminating any resident who put up a fight. Although the intent of the Scourge remains unclear, several unmutated children were taken from The Pitt by the Brotherhood and placed into initiate training. The motivations for the Scourge are unclear to this day, but many in the Brotherhood note that it was a marked change in the way the Brotherhood operates. Additionally, it is known that something was recovered from The Pitt during the Scourge, although to date it would seem that only Elder Lyons knows what it was.
It is said that a Brotherhood of Steel Paladin from the Scourge stayed on in The Pitt, seeking to bring law and order to the unwashed masses and creating an underclass of Pitt Slaves in the process, guarded by Pitt Raiders under his personal command. However, in the decades following the events of the Scourge, nobody has heard anything from The Pitt. Travelers who have gone to investigate have not returned, and no survivors have emerged."
(Fallout 3 Official Game Guide faction profiles)
- The Lone Wanderer: "How did you escape?"
Kodiak:"As they swept through, the Brotherhood policed up every non-mutie child they could find. Turns out, there weren't that many. Me and maybe twenty others. The younger we were, the less of a chance that we were mutated. It was ugly work, no doubt, but it had to be done. I'll never forget the sight of the Brotherhood of Steel breaching the breast of the mountain at dawn."
- The Lone Wanderer: "What happened to the other kids from the Pitt?"
Kodiak: "All of 'em became Initiates. Most of them went on to become Brothers. A lot fell in action. I'm the only survivor of the Scourge of the Pitt still stationed at the Citadel."
- Danse's dialogue: "The Brotherhood tried to run a quarry like this somewhere near the Capital Wasteland. It was more trouble than it was worth."
