杰克和他的妻子（和妹妹）琳达将自己展示为忠诚的美国公民和父亲，他们育有一个儿子小史密斯。当他的妻子做饭和打扫房子时，他和他的邻居（和兄弟）比尔·威尔逊一起在"家族企业"中工作。在这个企业中，他们保留并维持了长达数百年的当地传统:食人。当地家族允许路过的废土人留在城里，习惯了他们的热情态度和接待。这个门面是为了让旅行者在被居民杀死时措手不及。
