A compass is a navigational instrument for determining direction relative to the Earth's magnetic poles. It consists of a magnetized pointer (usually marked on the North end) free to align itself with Earth's magnetic field. The compass greatly improved the safety and efficiency of travel, especially ocean travel.

It is obtained after finding the broken compass at the crashed scout bus, and then repairing it (Repair 30) with the nearby compass sensor module, or by taking it to a workbench.

Both versions of the compass are quest items and therefore cannot be removed until given to Daniel.
If the player picks up the compass sensor module but does not use it to repair the compass, you will be unable to remove it from your inventory.
When Follows-Chalk is your companion and the compass is in your inventory, he will say: "So, that compass will always point north, huh. Even if it can't see the stars?"
