“You have received the specialized training needed to move in any form of Power Armor.”— In-game description
Power Armor Training is a perk in Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas. It allows the player character to equip power armor or a power helmet.
Fallout 3[]
- During the Picking Up the Trail, request permission for power armor training from Elder Lyons. Afterward, speak to Paladin Gunny in the Bailey (courtyard) of the Citadel to receive the perk.[1]
- Automatically gained upon completing The American Dream.
- Automatically gained upon completing the Anchorage Reclamation simulation (Operation: Anchorage).
Bugs[]
It is possible to obtain the perk without completing any quests past Escape! There is a mapping bug northwest of the entrance to the Citadel on the Arlington Bridge (The only bridge that fully crosses the Potomac River). There are a few mounds of rubble that one needs to get to the top. The "bald" mound of rubble allows one to fall in, once under the map, working the way to the Citadel by going left when possible. See it in action here.
Fallout: New Vegas[]
- After completing the quest Still in the Dark, return to either Nolan McNamara or Edgar Hardin, depending on who is now Elder.
- If McNamara remains elder, wait 24 hours outside of the bunker for the lockdown to be lifted, then talk to him. Telling him one wishes to join the Brotherhood of Steel will begin the Eyesight to the Blind quest. When this is completed, one will then receive Power Armor Training.[2]
- If helped Hardin become elder, complete the Tend to Your Business quest.[3]
- The other option for training is the For Auld Lang Syne quest, given by Arcade Gannon. Once having gathered the Remnants together, the Courier will be provided with the perk, in addition to a suit of Remnants power armor.
Notes[]
- NCR salvaged power armor does not require Power Armor Training in order to be worn, as it is technically no longer powered armor.
- If the Courier first completes For Auld Lang Syne and later completes Still in the Dark, Elder McNamara will be astonished over already having Power Armor Training and will ask where they learned it from. However, he then brushes it off as a result of the Courier being "well traveled" and will not give the option to alert him of the former Enclave bunker nearby.[4] Hardin remarks that he would be suspicious of the Courier's training, if not for him owing them.[5]
- The Courier is the only character in the entire game who needs a special perk to wear power armor, companions like Raul, who would likely have no experience with power armor, is capable of wearing it. Even Fiends can wear power armor.
- In Honest Hearts, there exists a dialog option enabled by this perk when talking to Ricky, where one can refute his suspicious claim that he shot a Brotherhood of Steel paladin through the eyeslit of his power helmet with an "11mm submachine gun" by stating that the eye slits of the T-series are bulletproof.[6]

- ↑ The Lone Wanderer: "Can you train me to use Power Armor?"
Gunny: "Heard you were coming. Yeah, I can train you. But don’t ask me to like it. My Initiates sweat blood, and you just get a free pass? Anyway... you ready for this? Now look, to wear Power Armor, first thing you need to do is relax your muscles. Let the suit do the work. Okay? Now, you... ...okay. You got all that? I think you know enough now to at least move around in Power Armor without killing yourself. That’s something, right? God help us all."
(Gunny's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "Don't I just put it on?"
Nolan McNamara: "If only it were that simple. Think of power armor as a machine to be operated rather than clothing you'd wear. With a little instruction, using it becomes as natural as simple movement, but to the ignorant, it's just so much heavy junk. So let's bring you up to speed, shall we? ...There, I think you've got the knack of it now. You should now be able to wear any kind of power armor you come across."
(Nolan McNamara's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "It's just like other armor, but heavy, right?"
Edgar Hardin: "Not even close. Power armor isn't something you wear so much as use. It's a weapon in its own right, and takes skill to wield. If you don't know what you're doing, you won't even be able to walk with it on. So how about a bit of quick instruction? ...There, I think you've got the hang of it now. You should be able to use any type of power armor you come across using what you just learned."
(Edgar Hardin's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "I already know how to use power armor."
Nolan McNamara: "Would you like to tell me where you learned such a thing? No, don't bother. A person as well-traveled as yourself is bound to pick up all kinds of skills, I suppose. Luckily, that's not all I have for you."
(Nolan McNamara's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "Actually, I already know how to use power armor."
Edgar Hardin: "Do you now? If I didn't already owe you a great deal I'd be highly suspicious right now. You'll have to tell me about it sometime."
(Edgar Hardin's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "What a load of crap. The eyeslits of T-series power armor are bullet-proof!"
Ricky: "Then I guess this dumb fucker's armor musta been... D-series or something! All I know is, he died up real dead when I killed him, okay?"
(Ricky's dialogue)
