Paul Revere was a key figure in the Revolutionary War and one of the original Minutemen.[1][2]

Background[]

Revere purchased the house that bears his name in 1770, where he lived with his family, including 16 children.[3] He resided here when he set out on the famed "midnight ride" to Lexington and Concord.[3][4] This effort was in response to British occupation and threats to disarm the colonists living there.[5]

On the night of April 18, 1775, British soldiers mobilized on Concord in an effort to carry out this initiative.[5] Paul Revere instructed Robert Newman to ascend to the top of the Old North Church with two lanterns to alert fellow patriots, while he rode to warn them in person.[5] The following battles of Lexington and Concord started the Revolutionary War. In front of the church, a monument was placed to commemorate this event.

Revere was responsible for the craftsmanship of the Massachusetts State House's dome, originally constructed of wooden shingles and covered in smelted copper.[6][7] He was rumored to have drank at the Shamrock Taphouse after its founding in 1787.[8]

Revere was buried in the Old Granary burying ground alongside other Revolutionary figures such as John Hancock, Samuel Adams, and the victims of the Boston Massacre.[1][9] His house is now a stop of the Freedom Trail.[10]
