Yao guai are creatures found around Los Angeles in the Fallout TV series.

Background[]

Named by descendants of those held in Chinese internment camps before the Great War, yao guai are mutated American black bears.[1][2] They are one of the more vicious creatures of the wasteland, having razor sharp claws and teeth, and a nasty temperament.[3]

Characteristics[]

Yao guai are large, mutated ursines that are descended from the bears that lived across America before the Great War. They are able to reproduce, as evidenced by the presence of cubs. Wild yao guai will attack nearly any other animals or people they encounter, including deathclaws. Despite this, yao guai exhibit a gentle, familial bond toward one another when found together and can even be domesticated.[4]

Fallout TV series[]

The Target[]

After encountering Lucy MacLean sometime after her escape from Vault 33 and trying to warn her off looking for her father and Moldaver, the rogue Enclave scientist Siggi Wilzig and his canine companion CX404 entered the Wilds. During a rest stop, while Wilzig opened a can of Cram as a traveling snack, CX404 wandered off and entered a nearby cave, later coming back carrying a bloodied severed hand, tipping Wilzig off to the presence of dangerous wildlife and they left shortly after.

Sometime later, the same cave was approached by Knight Titus and his squire Maximus from the Brotherhood of Steel while hunting for Wilzig. When Titus forced Maximus to enter the cave ahead of him, it is revealed the cave was inhabited by a yao guai which ambushed Titus, eventually overpowering him and causing the knight to flee in a panic when his squire failed to attack on his order. Titus was chased down and mauled by the yao guai that managed to pierce his T-60 power armor and inflict severe wounds on him before Maximus killed it with a headshot. Due to Maximus' refusal to treat Titus' wounds from the yao guai attack, he died soon after.
