The name comes from the Chinese, which means "Monster". The name was given to the creature by Chinese people living in internment camps
After the Great War the fallout radiation from the bombs caused mutations to many species of wildlife in the years preceding the war. The Yao guai is a mutated bear, while it may be debated the species, in the Commonwealth the Yao guai could be a mutated U.S brown bear, a native to the region. Yao guai are generally bigger in size then its unmutated predecessor and are more aggressive.
