The wooden soldier toy is a unique junk item in Fallout 4.

Background[]

When he first met his would-be wife Lucy, MacCready told her that he was a soldier of an unspecified military unit, lying out of shame over his actually being a mercenary hired to kill targets for money and never revealing the truth. A short time after, Lucy gifted her husband a wooden soldier toy she made herself as an inside joke toward his alleged occupation.[1]

After Lucy's death when she was mauled by feral ghouls that swarmed the MacCreadys and their son Duncan as they camped in an old metro station in the Capital Wasteland, MacCready held onto the soldier toy as a treasured keepsake in her memory, later taking it with him when he traveled to the Commonwealth to find a cure for the disease that was slowly killing Duncan.[2]

Characteristics[]

The wooden soldier toy appears to be a small, wooden carving of a soldier in an olive drab uniform with his gun at rest.

The wooden soldier toy can be broken down into its individual components for use in crafting:

  • When scrapped, it garners ceramic instead of wood despite being named "wooden soldier toy."
  • In-game, it is misspelled as "Wooden Solider Toy."

  1. MacCready: "Here... I wanted you to have this. I know a carved toy soldier is a strange reward for risking your life, but this one's special... it means a lot to me."
The Sole Survivor: "If it's special to you, then it's a thoughtful gift. Thank you."
MacCready: "You're welcome. Just be sure you don't lose it. My wife Lucy gave this to me right after we met. I... I uh, told her I was a soldier and she made it for me. Never could bring myself to tell her the truth... that I was just a hired killer. The soldier story was the best thing I could come up with. I didn't want to lose her because of what I was."

  2. The Sole Survivor: "She ever find out the truth?"
MacCready: "No. We made the mistake of holing up in a metro station one night. We didn't know that the place was infested with ferals. They were on her before I could even fire a shot. Ripped her apart right in front of me. There was nothing I could do. Took everything I had to escape with Duncan in my arms. Maybe it would have been better if we'd died there with her."
