I helped Eugene's revolution, time to end this.

When the Rust Settles (previously known in the PTS as Rust to Rust) is a main quest in Fallout 76, introduced in the Burning Springs update. It is the fourth quest in the storyline involving the region known as Burning Springs, and the final in the Burning Springs update.

Quick walkthrough[]

  • Travel to the Rust Kingdom and use the "secret entrance" (a pipe to the southwest outside the location) to enter the arena.
  • Navigate the pipes, past deathclaw cages to get to the Rust King's throne. Speak to Eugene.
  • Survive the attack and defeat the onslaught of Rust raiders, culminating in a deathclaw matriarch.
  • Speak to the Rust King. Either agree to kill Eugene, or refuse. If one refuses, the Rust King will kill him.
  • The Rust King says it will not be the last encounter between the Vault Dwellers and him. Optionally ask more questions before being removed from the arena. The quest concludes.

Detailed walkthrough[]

The Vault 76 dweller is asked to head to the Rust Kingdom to initiate the plan of revolution against the Rust King. At the location's exterior, there is a sewer pipe entrance, situated just outside the left-most entrance to the Rust Kingdom, unlocked using the pipe key given to the player character at the end of the previous quest.

Proceeding inside, the player character must navigate the pipe system before emerging into the arena's deathclaw holding pens, where they can choose to either kill or sneak past two Rust King's Army deathclaws on the way to the arena. Entering the arena, the player character is confronted by Eugene, who is standing in front of the Rust King. His surroundings depend on choices made in the previous quest:

  • Moose will always be found dead here, because he always agrees to join the revolution.
  • Leonard and Magpie may also be found dead on the skewers, depending on if they individually joined the revolution or not. If they agreed to help with the plan, they will be found dead. If they refused to join, they will not be present, having survived Eugene's betrayal. For more information on what causes Leonard and Magpie to refuse or agree to join the revolution, see the previous quest's article.

The Rust King and Eugene reveal that the latter has been a double agent who came to the Rust King after the dweller escaped and begged to be his champion. Eugene boasts to the dweller that he now deserves to be the Rust King's champion, citing his exploitation of those willing to threaten the Rust King as examples of his strength and loyalty. However, the Rust King berates Eugene for his weaselly scheming, and says he actually invites opposition, and is displeased with Eugene squashing the revolution's efforts before they could face the Rust King directly.

The Rust King then tests the Vault 76 dweller one final time with a large number of powerful Rust raiders, who will attack in waves, assailing the player in the arena. The fight becomes progressively harder with the addition of deathclaw matriarchs into the mix. After eventually defeating the arena raiders, the player character is named the new champion by the Rust King. The super mutant leaves Eugene's fate up to them.

  • Agree to kill Eugene. He must then be defeated in one-on-one combat, although he is not a particularly powerful enemy and will likely die quickly.
  • If the player character does not wish to kill Eugene, the Rust King will do it himself. A unique animation will play, with the Rust King applying pressure to the side of Eugene's head, crushing it into pulp and killing him instantly.

After making their choice, the dweller is free to talk with the Rust King one final time. After this, the Rust King says that he and the dweller will meet again before getting his guards to knock them out and return them to outside the compound. This concludes the quest line introduced with the Burning Springs update.
