Vultures[1] are scavenging birds of prey that live off the remains of other dead creatures, present across the North American continent.

Background[]

Vultures survived the Great War and its many nuclear blasts. They are very common in the American Southwest, and their cries accompany travelers crossing the New California deserts.[2]

They can be seen flying above most settlements in the Capital Wasteland, such as Megaton, Temple of the Union, and Evergreen Mills. The birds are also seen flying above and perching around the Mojave Wasteland.

Characteristics[]

Live vultures circle around both populated and fringe locations in the wastelands.

Notes[]

  • In Fallout 3, vultures remain in the air indefinitely and will never land.
  • Birds are merely a visual effect in the Capital Wasteland, they can fly through any surface. They are also classed as objects and are little more than a moving model in the sky with little/no detail of wing animation. Birds do possess a rudimentary 3D model, which is a bird texture bent into a bird shape.[3]
  • In Fallout: New Vegas, vultures will stop flying to perch on trees, power lines and various places such as Nipton and along Interstate 15. They will also land on the ground. When flying away after the player scares them, their hitbox will still be where they originally were, despite the model flying away.

Appearances[]

Vulture cries are heard frequently in Fallout. They appear as ambient models in in Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas.
