The V.A.N.S. perk enables the Vault-Tec Assisted Navigation System, which draws a path to your closest quest target.— Fallout 4 loading screen

V.A.N.S. (Vault-Tec Assisted Navigational System) is an Intelligence perk in Fallout 4.

Effects[]

Taking rank 1 of this perk grants the ability to generate a pathfinding tool, represented as an opaque line, when using V.A.T.S. that directs the player character along the shortest path to a quest or destination marker.[1] Rank 2, which was added to the game with the Nuka-World add-on, grants a permanent boost of +2 to Perception.

Notes[]

  • The perk icon shows Vault Boy sitting on the top of a cherry-red van.
  • If this perk is used while offroad, then the line will first indicate how to reach a definitive path like a road or dirt trail before going to a marker.
  • The line itself only extends a short distance ahead of the player character but walking in the direction of the line will make it disappear and reform always at the same length.
  • To activate this perk, one must hold down the V.A.T.S. button. This is different from activating V.A.T.S. in regular combat, where the button is only tapped instead of held down.
  • Rank 2 of this perk, if taken when Perception is already at 10, will raise it to 12 (13 if the Perception bobblehead was also acquired when already at 10 Perception).
  • Rank 2 simply adds to the Perception stat and not to its perk level. For instance, if Perception is originally at 1, upgrading the V.A.N.S. perk to rank 2 does not unlock the Perception level 3 perk Awareness.
  • The console command player.removeperk <PERK FormID> will not work for rank 1 of this perk, though it does for rank 2. To disable or remove rank 1, one must run player.removespell 6AB35, which removes the Vault Assisted Navigation System spell added by the perk itself, and thus negates rank 1.
  • This perk is at its most useful inside dilapidated, maze-like buildings (such as Augusta safehouse) where the route to the exit may be difficult to perceive.
  • Even if the perk is not taken, holding the V.A.T.S. button will automatically activate V.A.T.S., even if there are no visible targets in sight. This can be useful to "scan" the surrounding area for potential threats as it highlights any target within a certain radius, even if it is behind the player's back. No pathways will be shown, in this case.

This perk functions identically to the Clairvoyance spell from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, another game made by Bethesda.
