Video Forums

Thank you for participating in the video forums so far.

In order to work out where to go from here, I've created another forum asking the community where our "Red line" is, and whether or not I should continue to be the point person on this.

You can find the new forum here. I look forward to seeing your thoughts on this matter. Agent c (talk) 16:13, September 10, 2017 (UTC)

Hello, this is just a quick message to let you know a fourth question has been added based on the current feedback, especially from those who voted for removing the videos. Sakaratte - Talk to the catmin 19:52, September 10, 2017 (UTC)

Okay, I think its clear that going ahead with a meeting is a good idea. At this stage I would like to open the floor to agenda items. We have the following things to discuss.

  • An update on any negotiations, and other actions
  • Possible action to progress our case further whilst staying on network
  • Possible engagement with Wikia on video in line with the proposed deal- if we should participate and whom that contact person should be.
  • Possible alternatives if the situation cannot be resolved.

Please let me know if you want anything added to the agenda here

I'll be asking a number of people to speak on certain issues, but as always there will be plenty of room for discussion.

I propose that the meeting be held at 3pm North American Eastern Time on Sunday 24 September, this should be 8pm in London, 9pm Central European time, and Midday North American Western. If there are any objections please note them below and we'll look into alternative scheduling, the more objections the harder we look for a new time.

We have arranged facilities for the meeting, it will be held online. It is open to all persons who have participated in any of the video discussion threads up to today, except those employed by Fandom/Wikia inc (as this is the Community's meeting), or have been employed by them in the recent past.

Votes taken in this meeting will be taken as consensus view of the wiki, so everyone is encouraged to attend.

We have setup a discord server (Nukapedia's Fallout Shelter) located here. It is mobile friendly (via an app) and is very flexible.

Although everyone is welcome in our social space (The-Common-Room), only persons who meet the above criteria will be admitted to The-Town-Hall (where the meeting will be located). You may be asked to verify your account before this access is granted. Agent c (talk) 21:51, September 11, 2017 (UTC)

Content Mod vote

I've just added an update to the forum. Mind looking back as it may affect your voting decision. Sakaratte - Talk to the catmin 00:05, November 12, 2017 (UTC)

Endorsement Request

Yo JB. So I’ve been thinking about maybe running for dmod, and I thought I’d just ask for an endorsement. Thanks. NukaTheCola (talk) 15:19, December 17, 2017 (UTC)NukaTheCola

Signature

Can you update your talkpage signature in Preferences? It's set to [[JBour53|Talk]] which makes it a wrong and unnecessary red link. Should be [[User talk:JBour53|Talk]] Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 21:35, December 21, 2017 (UTC)

Discord

As discord has gone down, I've turned chat back on for the interim. Sakaratte - Talk to the catmin 22:14, December 30, 2017 (UTC)

Just a few words

It says no we’re in your guidelines that you can’t post hi/by post and also a was not gone really but was inactive. I don’t have two accounts. From vandalslay

Endorsement

Well, ever since I first got into the wiki I was interested in being a moderator. I feel like the d/mods are a great group, but are simply a little understaffed. So that’s a big reason I want to be a Dmod. Thanks. NukaTheCola (talk) 02:36, January 9, 2018 (UTC)NukaTheCola

Of the utmost importance

Several Californians just declared independence from the rest of the state. They are taking legal action to form a new state called "New California." Their government will be a republic form of government, which means they could presumably be called the "New California Republic" or NCR. The territory they are trying to gain rights to contains a large section of the Mojave desert.

Do you know what this means?! Zoder (talk) 05:19, January 17, 2018 (UTC)

Drinking and wiki-ing

Jbour, Clearly we need to have a chat about some of the things you said last night.

JBour53 - Today at 3:54 AM I can still type. But I still follow rules. I'm a squared away individual

15 minutes after you posted this message, there is a deleted message in the log of you offering to show your penis, so I beg to differ.

There's also this comment which I think shows your typing skills, and judgement were not up to par

Either way. Love everyone of y'all. Women cheat lie and steal. Y'all have been honest with me.lov shall.

Which is pretty sexist and insulting, and you'd clearly lost your ability to type by the end of the phrase.

I am lead to believe that there were under 16 year olds in chat at the time. Yeah, I know teens know all the words, but this kind of stuff can get you in real trouble with people with more authority than I have, and I'm not talking about the wiki police.

I'm going to throw this one over to you. You're a discussions moderator. You know the rules, the rules are pretty much identical in chat as they are to discussions. So now you have a clear head, I want to know do you think these comments are acceptable, and what would you do if you were moderating someone who said them? I'm so mad and disapointed I honestly don't know what to do here. Agent c (talk) 19:50, March 4, 2018 (UTC)

As we've discussed, a 48 hour discord ban will be applied. My wife left because of the "The downright retarded state the chat was in", and I can't say I disagree or blame her. I hope you'll be part of the solution going forward. Agent c (talk) 21:33, March 4, 2018 (UTC)

Character affinity

Apologies for the generic message.

This forum was raised almost a week ago to tweak article guidelines so we could get companion reactions added into the layout guidelines with the hope of achieving a consensus rather than a vote. Can you take 5 minutes to cast your eye over and give your input? Sakaratte - Talk to the catmin 14:36, May 12, 2018 (UTC)

Nukapedia and Fandom/Wikia talks

Hi,

Apologies for the impersonal nature of this message, as I'm relaying the same thing to admins and people who have previously expressed a view on featured video. Forgive me if I tell you some things you already know.

We have a call scheduled with Wikia this Friday. We need your input - and the input from as many others as possible. We're hoping to settle once and for all what our relationship is, if it can be salvaged, and what the future should be, as until we settle these featured video can't be settled.

Please, have a look at this forum and tell us what you think.

In addition to looking at our own future hosting option, we've also been in talks with other hosts. Included in these is Gamepedia/Curse. We have an ongoing dialogue with them, and if you have any questions about a possible unification to the vault, please do let me know and I'll relay any similar response we've had, and if your question is a first, I'll ask the question.

Thanks again. Remember, War never changes. Agent c (talk) 21:05, July 2, 2018 (UTC)

Our relationship with Wikia

Hi, as you may know we've been discussing our relationship with Wikia the past few months. Now, as a user rights holder I'd like you to participate in the vote here. Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 13:32, August 17, 2018 (UTC)

Nukapedia - Vault Merger: voting has reopened

Howdy,

As you may have already seen, voting for the proposed merger has been reopened. Voting was originally postponed so that users could better discuss the proposal, and after a lengthy conversation, that forum has since come to a close. For more information, please see the discussion itself. The post is a little lengthy, but if you are truly interested in making an informed decision, I would recommend reading through it.

Because this discussion may or may not affect how you voted initially or your rationale at the time, please review your post so that it reflects your current beliefs accurately.

This is only a notice of open polls and is not soliciting a change of vote. This is a generic talk page message intended only as for any and all voters, so as to avoid any indication of bias towards a particular outcome. Voting is slated to end on 5:01 pm November 1, 2019 (UTC).

The formal vote can be found here.

Thanks,

Call to Action

There have been quite a few sweeping changes to the wiki lately, and now that the Unified Community Platform has come to fruition here, it's more important than ever for our leadership to get together and inspire innovative changes for the next generation of wiki editors/readers.

As someone who is somewhat inactive myself, I understand how life gets in the way, and I'll fully understand if many of you are unable to commit, but I'd still like to try my best to appeal to you all in getting involved in a few of our currently active projects; especially so since rights-users participating in our discussions/votes are at an all-time low, and many internal decisions are having to be made between a select few users, which is bad for building consensus on important matters.

As such, I would like to ask for you all to look into two of our most important projects right now, as it would mean a lot to me and the wiki if as many people as possible got directly involved in helping shape our future:

  1. The Vault Academy is a program for the training and acclimation of new and even veteran users, training them on how to get involved in the various facets of the wiki, as well as helping them build bonds with their fellow users. The program has kicked off in a big way, and we are in desperate need of more rights-users to sign on as mentors, as we're having to share multiple mentees between each mentor. If you're looking to leave your mark on the wiki, then signing onto TVA program will be your way of doing so.
  2. As a minor update, we now have a new plagiarism point of contact. Should you suspect plagiarized content is at play, please get into point with the user FDekker who will be the initial handler of all such cases going forward.
  3. We have an upcoming meeting of the minds coming up on the 20th of this month, and we need people to come forth and pitch their ideas for adapting to the recent UCP changes, and to possibly adopt some of the ideas that our new datamining friends have been pitching to us.

Thanks for your consideration, and I do hope to hear back from you all! Even if it is just some of you dropping by to check the place out and say a quick hello. 寧靜 Fox.png 14:12, 13 November 2020 (UTC)

RE: Discussions Rules

Off topic and polls should not be deleted only because they are off topic posts or polls, but we do consider posts which do not foster any sort of discussion on the discussions platform to be spam. If someone posts something which has no point, and neither the OP or the reader can contribute anything, it gets deleted as spam. Similarly, we have cracked down on lazy "favorites" style polls which snuff out other topics, and they come in waves, where a user sees a poll and then presents 2-3 of their own polls, which are then followed by others response polls and so on. When these are deleted to keep them from filling the feed with spam, throttling the number which appear at any given time, the user should be notified somewhere. I typically use the moderation thread or, if they have already opened other polls, respond to the existing poll to explain the need for a slow down. If an existing thread has similar topic, the user should be referred to that thread. This is true for posts other than polls as well, but it is with polls in particular that we often see repeats of, at their worst, sometimes a couple times a week.

It may be more strict that was used by past moderation teams, but the mechanisms are already in place in the current rules.

Near the top, we have:

Where the number of off-topic discussions is limiting the ability of users to ask game-related questions and seek help, moderators at their discretion may ask for all "off topic" discussion to be limited to a specific "off topic" thread (or threads).

And then further down, with rule 8:

Repeative posts and/or Spamming. Don't say the same thing six times because no one is responding to you. Don't keep yammering on about a subject nobody cares about. Advertising, hi/bye posts, recruitment posts, meaningless and/or random posts may also be considered spam.

Those cover the ability for moderators to remove low quality posts across the board. Note that low quality =/= off topic. Many of TSR's history posts are only tangentially related to Fallout or may not related at all, but they are all very well done posts and provide a signficant amount of information which users can then respond to. And to accommodate some of the image spam, we made Meme Monday as an outlet which users can use to share images which would not be able to stand alone as threads, and users should be referred to as need if they make meme posts or similar discussionless image posts. And the community has been quite receptive, MemeM has been one of the most popular threads since it was started. We also have the Official off topic thread, which houses discussion so off topic and incoherent that it would not be able to stand alone. These combined efforts keep the feed clear for folks who have questions or prompts, and as best we can, preserves the ability for users to hangout a little more informally. The Dyre Wolf (talk) 06:37, 20 December 2021 (UTC)

Off topic is allowed, though. The post just has to have enough to merit standing on its own. Is there something to discuss in discussions? If so, that's fine. If it's the post equivalent of throwing shit at a wall to see if it sticks, it should be removed. There will always be some degree of subjectivity involved, which is one of the reasons choice of moderators is important, because we need to be able to trust moderators to make that sort of call. The long running off topic thread is a resource to refer users towards if whatever they posted cannot stand alone, and does not more readily fall into something like meme/discussionless image, where they can instead be referred to MemeM. The off topic thread (OT) is not the replacement for all off topic, but its lack of a topic (other than being off topic) means it can house all sorts of conversation which and is closer to a very slow version of discord. For instance 40k comes up constantly in the OT, but there are all sorts of 40k questions and discussions which could come up as completely standalone topics in their own threads, where other users can contribute. So here is an example scenario:
Prompt: How did you discover 40k and what was your first experience like?
If asked as a comment in OT, it might be right after someone else just finished talking about dinner. Several users might reply, but then someone who knows nothing about 40k wants to chat, so they talk about their workday or their cat, and the next person might comment on the weather. None of these people are in the wrong because the rapidly shifting nature of the thread is basically designed to accommodate exactly this sort of flow. It is not just off topic, there is no one, single topic.
If asked as a new thread, it is very different. The thread is off topic in the sense that it is not a Fallout related question, but the thread has a very clear and specific topic, 40k. If someone replies to the question about 40k instead comments about their work day, their cat, or the weather, then those are all off topic (they are not adhering to the 40k prompt). This is thread hijacking, and the user who replies in such a way is in the wrong.
In this case, the point of discussion could appear in either place. But if someone comes in with no prompt at all and posts an image or a video about 40, says next to nothing and just leaves it here, or posts a poll which makes no sense, only has joke answers, or in some other way fails to actually be a discussion? Then it gets deleted. The person can be referred to MemeM if it's images and such they're interested in sharing, and if they seem to be interested in general chatter, they can be sent to OT. And obviously, if it's just straight trolling, delete the post and ping them on the moderation thread, with warnings and bans as applicable. Does that help you any? Re: Uh what is going on?

Hello,

I was requested by the user in question to remove personal blogs and images within them. This is every user's good right, as those blogs are in the user space. Why you would consider this vandalism is honestly beyond me.

While I am sure that I only deleted relevant stuff, I will look through the deletions again to be safe. And no hard feelings, it has been a rough couple of days. But as a community, we need to move on, so I figured that a good start would be to update the staff roster and mediawiki tags, and continue from there. I apologize, if this has raised some concerns on your end. –FindabairMini-JSPnP Logo.pngThe benefit of the doubt is often doubtful. 11:08, 8 April 2022 (UTC)

A proposal

Hi JBour,

I've been tinkering with the idea of putting together a Wiki Fallout Podcast for a while, and got some agreement to it in a meeting of the minds earlier (December I think, I've been busy). With everything going on, and learning more about the community, I'm seeing it as more important that I do it.

I'm looking for other people to get involved in some way, people from different groups across the wiki so that all the various groups (even those opposed) can feel some ownership in it and feel encouraged to participate in the future, and your name has been suggested by a few people who I'm running ideas past.

The format of the podcast is going to be a few shows put together, like a talk based radio station (not talkback). One of the show ideas I'm looking at involves a lore expert who can be a bit of a heel... even if it's just an act, or an exageration. The show would have this expert answer a lore question (eg - Who fired the nukes first) and then act totally dismissive of any challenges to their position... Whatever it takes to make good radio. I was wondering if you might be interested, or if you knew of someone who might be up for the challenge? Agent c (talk) 23:42, 9 April 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for getting back to me. I'm pulling some stuff together this week, and I'm hoping to do some recording next weekend. What I'd like to suggest is you pull together a few paragraphs on a topic (Shall we go with "Who fired the nukes first?") fire it over to me in discord, I'll try to prepare a response, and we'll try a recording session over the weekend? Agent c (talk) 21:52, 10 April 2022 (UTC)
No problem. If it sounds a little rough I think thats ok, I'm thinking of trying to make it have that AM rather than HD sound anyway. What do you ride? I have one of these. Agent c (talk) 19:11, 11 April 2022 (UTC)
Just wanted to let you know I've drafted the "manefesto" for how the PIPcast will work its here Would love your thoughts.

Post Categories

Hi JBour, This is just a reminder about post categories on /d. "Other Fallout media" is used for posts about Fallout content that is not represented by any other category (Shelter games, F:BoS, the books, etc). "Future/Canned media" is for posts about ideas for things that could potentially come out. I noticed you shifted Canarelli's post about his idea for a new kind of Pipboy game to the OFM category, so wanted to give you a tip about what those are for.
