Vault Academy Progress Report #1

Well done on your first section of lessons - I have included the fancy badges you have earned below. You have shown competency through the first seven lessons and quizzes, and I am satisfied and enthusiastic about your progress. The next section will cover templates and the inner workings of articles. I would like to see you show a solid understanding of introductory templating and infoboxes throughout the next section, which spans lesson 8, lesson 9, lesson 10, and lesson 11. With your previous experience, I am sure it will be a breeze. Let me know if any questions in the meantime. Keep up the good work! -kdarrow Pickman heart.png take her for a spin! 08:28, 18 November 2020 (UTC)

Coding

I'm having a small discussion with User:CompleCCity about what to do with the edid coding, see User_talk:CompleCCity#Kbd. Do we use <tt>, <kbd> or remove to coding all together? Jspoelstra (talk) 17:39, 16 December 2020 (UTC)

Ok, we'll remove the tt code then. Looking forward to your modules, we were looking for someone like you with data mining expertise, I'm a bit into it myself. Finn

I think it's nonsense to have a disambig page for two characters. You can see them both already right there in the search bar when you start typing. It has to be at least three characters, any less it loses it purpose. Jspoelstra (talk) 19:22, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

Sent Kate a message. Yes, I think we have some more disambig pages with only two entries, and it's time we have a look at those. Even pages like The Pitt, or Far Harbor. Jspoelstra (talk) 19:32, 21 December 2020 (UTC)
Needs to be rewritten. Would indicate creating disambig pages for, as an example, weapon mods, which is madness. Jspoelstra (talk) 19:50, 21 December 2020 (UTC)

GECK

I don't agree with the suffixes on the Garden of Eden Creation Kit page. When you check other Category:Miscellaneous items overview pages you'll see we remove it using the pipe. Goes in fact for all the item pages. It isn't necessary because it's already disambiguated with the game in the box to the left. Jspoelstra (talk) 15:29, 24 December 2020 (UTC)

Well if you really want to get technical not every one of the G.E.C.K.s are actually misc items. Also from a reader's perspective having the links all say the same thing looks like they just point back to the page you are already on. Having the link text being the same as the link differentiates them more at a glance. -Eckserah User Eckserah.png Head Dataminer 21:58, 24 December 2020 (UTC)
The game notation in the box left to it already denotes it properly. All these kind of pages, so what links to {{Gamearticlelist}} use this format. I've undone it again, if you really want to drive it to the letter, take it up with a mediatior, an admin, I suggest AllYourFavorites. Jspoelstra (talk) 15:20, 27 December 2020 (UTC)

Are you planning to ask someone to use a bot on these maintenance categories? Jspoelstra (talk) 14:18, 30 December 2020 (UTC)

Currency

I've created a caps template to be used on pages with the cap currency. You could do the same with other currencies like gold bullion. But I do need to know you have the ok from Tagaziel and/or AllYourFavorites about using the currency images like this. Jspoelstra (talk) 19:05, 30 December 2020 (UTC)

Re: Line break tags

Sorry, as a programmer I'm just used to <br> being an empty tag, especially since now every wiki is running on HTML5 anyway. I'll keep that in mind, though. Thanks for the info! △ GabWas [✉] 10:31, 10 January 2021 (UTC)

Form ID

Hey, I'm considering renaming the form id code in the infoboxes back to baseid again. When you look at the Form ID page, the form id exists of two components, the base id (creating multiple copies of the item) and the ref id (moving to that item). So according to that page, form id exists of two components and that makes it incorrect in the infoboxes. We'd have a form id coding (base id + ref id), and a ref id. It's confusing. Another thing, you have created a TableLoopTest template, what does that do, and a module with a red-linked category. What purpose does that module (Module: String) have? Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 18:09, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

You'd know better then I. I trust you make adjustments to our Form ID page then. Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 19:16, 22 January 2021 (UTC)
I take it the base ids on character pages like Mr. Clark should be changed to form id as well? Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 19:21, 22 January 2021 (UTC)

Rolling back rep

I'm rolling back reputation because empty tables look worse than the fix I implemented. Devastating DaveZIP ZAP RAP 18:27, 25 January 2021 (UTC)

Splitting perk pages

I'm see many split templates on perk pages like Gun Fu to name one. If you're planning for that there needs to be community sensus in my opinion as it's affecting the wiki content to a great degree. Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 21:07, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

Which Fallout 76 perk pages did we already split then? Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 12:56, 29 January 2021 (UTC)

Abb

I don't know what purpose the change to the Abb template has, but we now have an error on the Flip page, top right corner above the infobox. Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 17:45, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

You changed it from FWW to FOWW so doing that seems to have fixed it. Still I don't see the value of those categories, there's nothing in it now. Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 18:20, 1 February 2021 (UTC)

Fair editing

When someone has edited something and you think the edit is unnecessary, the best course of action is to create a talk page discussion or to message them directly first (not the editing party's duty). Rollback should be the last course of action, especially since editing is free to everyone and perceived mistakes or problems can be fixed instead of whole edits removed. Devastating DaveZIP ZAP RAP 01:00, 2 February 2021 (UTC)

Re:Mobile Infoboxes

No, it doesn't. Fandom updated the mobile site for this wiki to their latest platform which preserves the removed attributes.

Kudak (talk) 01:32, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

Hate to be rude here m8 but we have been discussing these changes on the Discord and you are sort of breaking a whole lot of work by reverting these changes bud.
Kudak (talk) 01:35, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
These changes were thoroughly tested by myself on both desktop and mobile sites. The new mobile site IS emitting these styles and it IS disrupting the mobile infobox experience on the wiki. If you took the time to look at how the revisions that I made impacted the mobile site before mass-reverting my changes you would have noticed this.
Kudak (talk) 01:43, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
Removing the vignette scaling was intentional. When you hard-code scaling like that it scales for both desktop and for mobile devices. On desktop this is fine as I created the infoboxes to work in this way. At the time I created them the mobile skin didn't have issues stripping the styles out and rescaling the images to fit the device viewport. That is no longer the case. The hard-coded image scaling now causes the images to not fit the infobox anymore on the mobile site, causing them to sit left-justified. CSS scaling on a large image on desktop, which has been added to the infobox css, isn't perfect but at such a small resolution you wouldn't be able to discern any imperfections anyway.
Again, had you bothered to look at how the changes that I made impacted the mobile site then you would have seen that I corrected an issue in order to improve the mobile experience as well as compensating for these revisions on the desktop with CSS. Reverting my revisions en masse was the wrong course of action to take and it comes off as heavy handed. You are free to discuss these changes with me on the Discord server if you would like.
Kudak (talk) 01:58, 7 February 2021 (UTC)
The image scaling on the server-side vs. css scaling do not make a massive amount of difference when a 1000x1000px image is reduced to having a width of 242px max, less than 1/4 of the resolution. Furthermore, to get full resolution, or a higher resolution, you can always click, or tap, on the image in order to view it in a light box. Your issue with images being too large for the infobox was caused by some faulty CSS. That is my fault but it was remedied just before you started your mass-revert effort.
As for your proposal to render things differently in wikitext depending on the platform that is being targeted... I am going to have to assume that you have not been keeping up with FANDOM's portability goals for the last few years. If you had you would know that the emphasis is on writing templates that target mobile devices first and which can be themed on desktop using CSS in order to provide a more full and comprehensive look. There is no mechanism that will allow you to write wikitext one way for the mobile skin and another for the desktop. Not only this but FANDOM has been clear that they do not want to encourage nor enable this sort of thing as it breaks parity between the two formats and leads to feature drift where one platform is neglected in favor of maintaining the other.
If it would quell your concerns I can always ask the FANDOM staffer in charge of portability efforts to come in and have a look at the changes that I proposed to see if they line up with how FANDOM envisions that things should be done.
Kudak (talk) 02:23, 7 February 2021 (UTC)

Crafting table FO76

What's the difference between the crafting table template and the crafting table FO76 template? Is it to work better on mobile? Then what about the Fallout 4 pages? Those still use the original crafting table. Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 13:35, 8 February 2021 (UTC)

An anomymous user changed the Form ID page again. Can you take a look at it? Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 13:55, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
And we have an {{Mbox test}} template. If you don't have plans with that we might just as well delete it. Otherwise use the {{Test}} template (without documentation). Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 14:00, 8 February 2021 (UTC)
How do you fix the pages in the Category:Template Fixes (Crafting table FO76)/Uses breakdown category? It would nice to see some explanation how to fixes pages in these kind of categories in for example the category page where they are in. Now people are guessing what to do. I was. Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 18:03, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
I just saw the documentation of the crafting table, so ok, you got the documentation in order. Still, how can you remove the pages from aformentioned category? Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 18:11, 10 February 2021 (UTC)
Who came up with the idea to remove the required crafting tables to convert an item into components (Chalk (Fallout 76) to name one)? I'd say leave them there. Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 18:35, 10 February 2021 (UTC)

If and when you decide what you would like to say, copy it and send it to me. I'll give you a few easy options to reach me since not everyone is everywhere. You can leave a message on my talk page, you can @ me anywhere on the nuka discord, or you can @ me on the 2021 off-Topic thread. If you do not intend to write a message or if you want to decline the nomination, please let me know as well, so I'm not having to track someone down to squeeze an answer out of anyone. There's no deadline to reply, but I would appreciate it if it's sooner rather than later.

Seth

Wikipedia has a similar policy. If you plan to state that we have a different policy than Wikipedia, actually check that it is different. Wikipedia has the same policy, except it also describes how to determine ambiguity. Since we fall back to WP's manual of style and practices in the absence of our own, I took the liberty of applying them here.

In this case, the question is whether Seth is a primary topic or not, and there are two criteria to consider: Usage and long-term significance. The two are largely tied together (topics relevant long-term will also see high usage, in essence). So, some of the tools used to determine primacy are web traffic and backlinks. I took a gander at Google Analytics and in the 10 year period between 2011 and 2020, the Fo1 Seth accounted for some 87% visits, whereas the Fo3 and real Seth McCaughey accounted for a little over 2.5% each.

Our internal links also reflect the primacy of Fallout's Seth:

  • Seth: 92 backlinks.

Others:

  • Seth (Fallout 3): Three backlinks.
  • Seth (Fallout 4): Three backlinks.
  • Seth (Fallout 76): Three backlinks.
  • Seth McCaughey: Five backlinks.

Seth is not an ambiguous term. This is reflected in hard data. Thus the move. Tägäżïël 19:00, 13 February 2021 (UTC)

I just explained to you the reasoning here, which is based on hard data, not "what first comes to mind". You have entirely failed to actually provide any meaningful counterpoint and, judging by your reply, entirely ignored the information provided above - evident when you claim I've ignored "2 game releases that added characters of the same name". I didn't. They simply weren't visited at all.
I didn't. You literally have that outlined above, also explaining that these "added characters" are not even present in the games, but mentioned in single notes. Coupled with the amount of backlinks and visits, it's clear that the primary topic whenever someone looks Seth up is the Seth from Fallout 1, which shouldn't be a surprise given that he is an actual character in the game and is later referenced in Fallout: New Vegas as the founder of the NCR Rangers, who feature prominently in the story.
Again, the policy is a simplification of Wikipedia's and ambiguity is a condition sine qua non, by both our standards and Wikipedia's. Our policy even states that multiple meanings but only if they are ambiguous:
If a given term can refer to multiple articles (i.e. if it is "ambiguous")...
"I.e." or id est stands for that is and clarifies that the requirement for disambiguation is that the terms must actually be unclear and/or capable of being confused. Given the number of backlinks and prominence of Fo1's Seth (again, one of the first characters you meet tied to Shady Sands quests either as a mandatory stop or a source of additional information, also mentioned in Fo2 (just checked, Tandi explicitly names him) and FNV), compared to the mentioned-only characters (single throw-away mentions in single notes), it is unclear, to me, how this could possibly be confused.
In fact, what's confusing is trying to pass all four Seths as equal by following your particular interpretation of the policy, in a situation when they absolutely do not have a comparable level of prominence. Tägäżïël 11:02, 14 February 2021 (UTC)

Hello Eckserah.
I am one of the admins of the french Fallout wiki and I need your help with a template you created. It's about the Template:Crafting table FO76. We are trying to set it up on our wiki but we have a problem. These lines ({{#forargs: ) may be the source of our problem. We don't understand what it is and we don't know how to solve it.
Are we missing another model or module? Did we miss something? I will appreciate if you can tell us what is wrong so that we can correct the template.

Oh, now I see that too. It should actually be Locked & Loaded with the ampersand then for those pages. Looks like we should change that then. Still I'd like to know how that (Locked & Loaded) behind the section is created. Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 20:49, 26 March 2021 (UTC)

Getting started

Thanks for the welcome! While I have a thing for Fallout lore and have an interest in contributing on that front, I also have an interest in helping out with the technical side of things if there's a need for that. I'm sure you've seen by now, but I've already had to contact a few people regarding the recent edit-warring on the Emmett Mountain article, and you're next on the list I'm having to go through. I can understand how tempting it can be to go in and try to maintain the prior status quo when you see other editors continuing to edit-war, but in these cases, the best practice is always to alert an impartial administrator, and get them involved so that they can handle the situation as best they can.

When these cases do pop up, always remember that you have a few different options available to you:

  1. Send a message to the offending editor's talk-page, and try to open a dialogue.
  2. Stick to the article talk-page and try to reach a consensus of sorts.
  3. Contact an impartial user to act as a mediator, and see if a compromise can be reached.
  4. All of the above

I appreciate you taking all of what I've said into consideration though, and if you have any questions and/or concerns, my talk-page is always open. Happy editing. 寧靜 Fox.png 04:04, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

Re-write

I sent Dave a message as well, but I got around to re-writing the Emmett Mountain disposal site article, and I'd like for the both of you to look it over, and let me know your thoughts. 寧靜 Fox.png 16:52, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

Infobox plan

Ok, I'll wait for that then. Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 20:40, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

Template

You need to categorize uploaded templates. I've just added a category to Template:ExplicitContentDisclaimer, you can update it later on. Also needs documentation but I reckon you're working on that. What's the purpose of this template? Also, we have an overview page for templates, Fallout Wiki:Templates, and Fallout Wiki:Template modernisation. Tagaziel tells me we don't really need it. I had my question marks as well, we do have copyright templates that can help us. We got by without these sort of templates in the past as well. Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 16:13, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
I suppose you can add the documentation and then I can better see what it does. Jspoel Speech Jspoel.png 16:16, 18 April 2021 (UTC)
