Hi Bigsam,

Can you let me know when you're likely to be on the wiki, and any particular areas of interest you have so I can pair you with the right mentor? Thanks Agent c (talk) 15:08, February 24, 2015 (UTC)

I will be online on Saturdays, and I am interested in Fallout 3 and New Vegas, I could do anything related to those games. Thanks --Bigsamcrew (talk) 16:01, February 24, 2015 (UTC)

Mentats Edit

Looks like I'm gonna be your Mentat. First things first. What do I call you? Bigsam? Sam? MC Rew? If you got any general editing questions, lay them on me now. If not, I'm just killing time for a few days until we start on the project. Give all the editing guidelines a read over until then if you have not yet. I'm generally online for one cigar after work (3pm EST or so) and then another one after dinner (8PM EST or so). Each cigar lasts about 1.5-2 hours. If things are interesting, or I have enough beer, I might even light up a second after dinner cigar:P The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 23:07, February 25, 2015 (UTC)

I suppose the best place to start is with the help pages. You can find them linked from the top nav menus. Comm. > Help. Read over the basic stuff first. If you have that covered move on to some of the more advanced stuff. What you can do, and would probably be a good idea, is to create a sandbox to just test stuff out. I do most of my work in sandboxes and then move it when it's done. Just create a new page titled User:Bigsamcrew/sandbox. You can practice all you want there. You can even copy a page over and mess with things in your sandbox to see what changes when you edit it. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 20:46, February 26, 2015 (UTC)
Also, I just remembered there's a few good tutorials listed on the Fallout Wiki:New User Network#New User Reference Library. A real good place to start tinkering with things is to spruce up your user page. Maybe add a few userboxes or an infobox. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 20:50, February 26, 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, --Bigsamcrew (talk) 21:53, February 26, 2015 (UTC)

I think I'm going to have you work on creating some disambiguation pages. I'll look at the tables and create a list for you that need to be created. When you're ready to start, we'll go over exact instructions. I'll get back to you later tonight with that list. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 20:31, March 2, 2015 (UTC)

Okay, I will be on later tonight for a little while. The majority of my work will get done during the day though. --Bigsamcrew (talk) 20:55, March 2, 2015 (UTC)

First assignment Edit

OK. What I'd like you to do is work on creating a disambiguation page in your sandbox. You'll learn to use a few templates, add wiki-links to existing pages, how to format a disambiguation page and what they're for and then you can work on some more just like it. First off: What's a disambiguation page? When you have a number of articles with exactly the same name, like "Frag grenade", you have to disambiguate them somehow. The way we typically do that here is to put in parentheses the name of the game behind the article name, e.g. Frag grenade (Fallout), Frag grenade (Fallout 3) and Frag grenade (Fallout: New Vegas). That's called disambiguation. What we then do is create what's called a disambiguation page, that looks a lot like Frag grenade. A disambiguation page is a navigation aid to help a reader find an article they know should be called "Frag grenade" but they don't know we've added the disambiguation term "(Fallout 3)" to the end. They type in "Frag grenade", find the disambiguation page, and then can select the correct article they want to read.

Secondly, there's a few templates we'll be using. Templates are easy ways to display alot of information easily, or to display it the same way across a lot of pages. They get transposed into the page when placed there. One of the templates we'll be using is the Games template. That's a little template we use alot that adds the little icons at the top right of a page with links to the games that are listed in the template. You can read the complete template usage instruction at the template page I linked, but in short, you just list the games in abbreviated format. Each game has an approved abbreviation listed on the template page. FO1, for Fallout, FO2 for Fallout 2, etc. All you need to do is type FO1 and list the games you need to display. In this case it will list Fallout, Fallout Tactics and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel.

Another template we'll be using is the Disambig template. This is what's known as a direction box template. It displays a box at the top of the page and automatically adds the page to Category:Disambiguation. The rest of the page will consist of what's known as an ordered list, specifically a bulleted list of lines listing the articles being disambiguated and what they're about. To make a bulleted list, all you have to do is place an asterisk (*) at the beginning of a new line in the editor. If you're not using the source editor, you'll want to switch to that in your preferences. It's much easier to add templates that way. Go to your preferences > editing tab > preferred editor and select source editor from the pull-down menu. You'll also need to use page links. Those are simple. You type double brackets [[ and start typing the page you want. Link suggest will do all the work. Make sure it's the page you want and select it from the drop-down menu. You can change the display text for wikilinks by adding a pipe (|) and typing something. Here's a link to your sandbox using display text. That's formatted like: Here's a link to your sandbox using display text.

So what I'd like you to do is to look at the Frag grenade disambiguation page in the source mode editor (just click "edit" when on the page, make sure you don't save any changes, we're just looking here) and create one for Frag mine (Fallout 3) and Frag mine (Fallout: New Vegas) in your sandbox. You can even copy over the content from the source editor from the frag grenade page as a basis. You'll need the disambig template there, and a games template listing Fallout 3 (FO3) and Fallout: New Vegas (FNV). Then you'll need to list the two frag mine pages, changing the wikilink from grenade to anti-personnel mine and the game they're from.

When you're done, the code should look something like this, but with the proper page links and games for the two frag mines:

DisambigFO1
* Frag grenade (Fallout), a grenade in Fallout.
* Frag grenade (Fallout Tactics), a grenade in Fallout Tactics.

You can use the preview feature in the editor to check how the page looks and see if you got it right. Bad links will show red, so you know you linked something wrong. Bad template calls will also show red, so you know you got the template wrong. Give it a shot and let's see how you do. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 03:14, March 3, 2015 (UTC)

Looks great. Only mistakes I see are "a anti-personnel mine" twice. Correct those to "an" and then you can copy/paste that content into the page Frag mine. Now, when you click on that link, you're gonna be redirected. That's another kind of page we have here. They automatically tell the browser to load a different page. You can tell by the "Redirected from Frag mine" bit at the top. You can get to the actual frag mine page by clicking that backlink to the fragmine page. Click that, get to the actual "frag mine" page (which is a redirect page), hit edit, remove what's there and paste the code you just wrote in your sandbox there, check it in preview and hit publish. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 04:13, March 3, 2015 (UTC)
Everything looks good, but we put it on the wrong page. No problem, I reverted the Land mines page back to a redirect to Land mines. The page we need to put that on is the Frag mine page. We're gonna have to jump through a hoop to get to the page. Since the frag mine page is a redirect, when you click the link there, it's gonna take you directly to the Land mines page. But we need to get back to the real frag mine page. There's two ways to do this.
Redirect
First we can get there by clicking a link (or using the search bar). When you click the link to the frag mine page above, you'll actually go to the "mine" page, since frag mine is a redirect. It will look like the image to the right there. You'll see the area I have outlined in red where it says you were redirected from the "frag mine" page. You can click that link for "frag mine" there and it will go back to the actual "frag mine" page. That's the one we want. Or you can get there by adding a little something to the end of the actual url in your browser address bar. If you add ?redirect=no to the end, it won't redirect you. The url would look like this: http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Frag_mine?redirect=no. Either way gets you to the actual frag mine page. Go ahead and put that content on that page just like you did the mine page last night. That will end your first assignment:P The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons

Second assignmentEdit

You next assignment is to create some more disambig pages. We needs ones for bottlecap mine, pulse mine and plasma mine. Start with the bottlecap mine. Do it just like you did the frag mine, work it up in your sandbox and when it's ready, put it on the redirect page Bottlecap mine. Make sure you navigate to the real bottlecap mine page. It's another redirect, so you'll have to get there the same way I described for frag mine. When that's done and I've had a chance to check it, work up plasma mine. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 20:57, March 3, 2015 (UTC)

Alright. Good work. You caught that the pulse mine shouldn't link to anti-personnel mines. Those look ready to be published. Go ahead and do that and I'll show you how to check links to a page and see if the mine page is finally clear of links. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 21:42, March 3, 2015 (UTC)
OK. First a little about redirects. You know how they work now, but there's some other things to know about them. First, we really want to keep the number of redirects to a minimum. For a couple of reasons. The biggest reason is that they can come up in search and link suggest. We don't really want that. We want folks finding and linking to the correct pages. So we really try to only keep ones for terms we feel that will be searched for a lot that won't necessarily return the correct page. We may end up deleting some of the redirects that we are creating during this project, but we'll get to that later. The other thing to know about redirects is that we prefer to clean up the links from redirects. When you move a page leaving a redirect, all the other pages that linked to the old page still link there. Preferably, we go in and point all those links to the correct page. The tool that helps us do that is "What links here". You can find that in your toolbar, the green menu at the bottom of the window. It should be listed there under "My Tools". If not, click the "Customize" link there and add it. So, take for instance that page Land mines. We cleared it out, turned it into a redirect, and fixed most of the links to it. Does it still have any links? Click "What links here" while on that page and you'll see just a few more links. One, a double redirect (which is real bad) from J's talk page archives through "Pulse mines", and another that I left on your talk page. To clean those up, we'll need to fix the link in J's archives (I'll do that. You should never edit another person's userspace without permission, or as a sysop doing maintenance), point the pulse mines redirect to the new land mines page and fix the link on your user page to the land mines page. I'll let you handle the last two. It should be pretty explanatory. Just change the links on both pages to Land mines.
I might as well cover another of the rules here while I'm at it. Make sure you both license and categorize all images you upload here. I saw you uploaded some on the Special:Recentchanges log. That log is the life blood here. It's where all editors keep an eye on what's being done. I have added it to my toolbar, you may want to, too. Make sure you select the correct license from the drop down menu when you upload images (if you don't know which it is, you can always ask) and add the proper category. User page images go in Category:User page images. If you don't do that, they run the risk of getting deleted. Unused images will also get deleted after while, so make sure you place images you upload someplace. You can go back in to an images file page, click edit and add the license and category later, if you need to. Go ahead and categorize your images. We'll figure out what license they need later.
One more note. I forgot to ask what kinds of skills you have. Have you done any wiki editing before? Do you know any HTML? You're catching on very quick, so if I have a better feel for your experience I can better mentat you. Clearing the links is the last thing to do right now. I'll be moving on to the next overview page, probably molotov cocktails, or dynamite. I wanna get the explosives done first. I'll let you handle all the disambigs and clean links from redirects after I get the pages up. I'll message you then. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 01:29, March 4, 2015 (UTC)

3rd Assignment Edit

The Dynamite page is done. You can go ahead and created the necessary disambig pages for those weapons. No rename on this one, so we don't have to deal with redirect link clean up. When you list the weapons on these disambig pages, make sure you list them in canon order. Also, per policy, items that are exactly the same, like the Fallout and Fallout 2 dynamite only need to be listed once, and can have links to both games on their line, like on Frag grenade. I'll redo the Plastic explosives later tonight, and I'll give you a heads up when that's done. Also, when you publish these disambig pages, you can go ahead and update the progress tables on the project page. If you need help with editing a table, let me know and I'll walk you through it. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 22:31, March 4, 2015 (UTC)

Plastic explosives is done too. Same thing as dynamite, just needs the disamgib, no link fixing. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 02:05, March 5, 2015 (UTC)

On page names Edit

Word of advice, my good man. When looking at naming pages, especially disambiguation pages, look at previous examples. For example if you search for disambiguation pages you'll return results with the full disambiguation in the name for example Johnny (disambiguation). Might wanna rename that disambiguation page you created. Good work, by the way. Richie9999 (talk) 04:11, March 5, 2015 (UTC)

Thanks Richie. -- War Never Changes Bigsamcrew 04:16, March 5, 2015 (UTC)

Mind you, that's only if they include disambiguation in the page name. Do a quick search of the site for "disambiguation" and it'll turn up every disambiguation page. Use what's prevalent there to guide you. Richie9999 (talk) 04:17, March 5, 2015 (UTC)

Links Edit

Just a quick note on links. For small pages like these disambiguation pages, an article should only be linked once. For instance, on the Dynamite (Disambiguation) page, dynamite should've only been linked once, not seven times. Keep up the good work, Paladin117>>iff bored; 15:13, March 5, 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, -- War Never Changes Bigsamcrew 16:45, March 5, 2015 (UTC)

Pally's right. We should probably only link once. I stripped that code from an existing overview page, so now I'll have to remember which one it was and go change it too. In the future, let's just link pages like that once. I handled the nomination for deletions. These pages are required by policy, so they stay. I've got a few more explosives pages to deal with, and I'll figure out how I'm gonna do them tonight. I'll update you then. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 21:42, March 5, 2015 (UTC)

Got it. -- War Never Changes Bigsamcrew 23:58, March 5, 2015 (UTC)

Molotov cocktails is done. You won't need to list fire bomb, just the others. I also don't think we'll need to fix links on this, just convert the old Molotov cocktail overview page to a disambig page. Links should be fine to that. Now I gotta decide what to do about flares and flare guns. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 03:13, March 6, 2015 (UTC)

I will finish it tonight. -- War Never Changes Bigsamcrew 03:35, March 6, 2015 (UTC)

You probably read my message to Gunny. As it currently stands with the project, those cut content and non canon templates would go there where you placed them. I have my concerns with the project, and these tags are one of them. In my opinion, it makes the page less readable. Not sure where it will go from here, you can continue with the project and its guidelines until you or I hear from Gunny. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 16:14, March 6, 2015 (UTC)
Flare is ready to convert to a disambiguation page, and no link fixing needs to be done again. No need for the cut content or non-canon templates on the disambig pages. These are just navigation aids, and those templates are really there to note whether game content, which these pages don't really have, is canon or not. Looks like there's 4 links on that page to disambiguation. That's the last of the explosives/incendiaries. I'll have to decide if I start on melee or unarmed next. Probably unarmed. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 18:15, March 7, 2015 (UTC)

On to bigger thingsEdit

Let's move on to actually creating an overview page. Go ahead and either clear out your sandbox or start a new one (call it sandbox2 or something) and copy the contents of Gauntlet there. Go to the project page, in the progress section, click the expand button on the table in the "current status" section, sort it by the weapon "type" by clicking on that header and scroll down to the weapons typified as "gauntlet bladed". Check to see if all those weapons are listed on the page. If not, start off by adding them to the gamearticlelist template at the very top of the page. Remember, these things always go in canon order. You'll see the two template parameters: |game1 and |articles1. If you need to add more, you can add up to |game15 and |articles15. Remember that dlcs have their own abbreviations in the games template, so use those if you can, in canon order after the game they are dlc for. If you get stuck or have questions, I'll be around chat later tonight after dinner. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 21:22, March 8, 2015 (UTC)

I like how you used the horizontal rule to break apart the different weapons. Interesting. But let's go ahead and break up the template by game and dlc. The games template supports abbreviations for all the dlc, and they're listed under the "game" header of the project status table. See what it looks like with FNVDM, FNVHH, FNVLR and FNVGRA broken out into their own sections. One thing we're shooting for on these pages is consistency and I've been doing them that way. You may not need the hr's then. Check it both ways and see how they look. Also, when you break out the dlcs, you can lose the dlc icons. Cleans up the list a little that way. When you're happy with that, go ahead and remove the electro-gauntlet. I've got that slated for another page. Let's see how that looks and then you can go ahead and redo the individual model sections by the project guidelines. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 21:12, March 9, 2015 (UTC)
Gamearticlelist template looks good. I wasn't quite ready yet to publish on the article, we still have the changes to do to the sections. I'll make those changes to the new format on the article tonight and you can see then. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 20:10, March 10, 2015 (UTC)
I think we still need to make the Deathclaw gauntlet page into a disambig page. I don't think any others on Gauntlets need any. I cleared links to Gauntlet and added the for/see templates to all the articles. Which unarmed weapon type do you want to work on next? Gloves? Power fists? The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 23:55, March 11, 2015 (UTC)
Power fists sounds good. I've loaded the current page's contents in a sandbox where we can work on it: User:The_Gunny/Power_fists. Go ahead and start on the gamearticlelist and games templates. We'll also need a For template at the very top of the page linking it to the weapon overview page like we've done on all the other pages we've done so far. All the power fists are tagged "glove piston" I think in the project table. Something like that. When those three templates are good, we'll reorganize the individual weapons by model into sections. Ignore that huge ass warning at the top of my sandbox. You have my permission to edit the page:P The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 23:09, March 12, 2015 (UTC)
Link usage in the gamearticlelist template is disambiguated article names only. So all those "Big Friggers" have to go, as well as the (GRA) disambiguation. Just change the link display text to the actual article name, without any disambiguating terms. The For template looks good. Salt Upon Wound's fist is FNVHH content, so break that out. And the games template must match the games that are listed in the gamearticlelist template. Also, double check the project page table. Only "glove piston" weapons go on that page. Ballistic fist, etc. come off for now. We'll add those to another page before we delete the current one so we don't lose the content. There should be 17 weapons listed on that page. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 20:51, March 13, 2015 (UTC)

LinksEdit

Your linking is not going that well. You need to check where they link to, like radroach (isn't game specific) or initiate. And you don't have to double-link, like radroach. Just radroach is sufficient. I wouldn't make a project of it, for example linking every damage is not really a priority.

Again, check your links. Energy cell leads to the overview page and not the game specific Fallout: New Vegas variant, where it should be linked to. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 21:18, March 23, 2015 (UTC)

RE: ProjectEdit

Thanks for wanting to get involved! Can always do with the help. In short it's about having at the very least a physical description and the character's role in the background section. Also I strongly recommend citing what you write, it's usually in the dialogue files. If there's anything else you need feel free to leave another message on my talk page, I also understand that this may not be the most helpful message and there isn't a lot of guidance on the project page itself. --KernOrisymbolHallowed are the Ori 18:57, April 13, 2015 (UTC)

Behind the ScenesEdit

Technically speaking the most we need is a textual or visual correlation in order to add something to behind the scenes (as well as for dates to match up, obviously). We do work on a bit of a case-by-case basis for the most part, but there is a correlation (they have the exact same name and rank) and Col. Sanders is widely known enough for a cultural reference to him to pay off. JASPER//"Do you like hurting other people?"UserRichard 19:57, April 13, 2015 (UTC)

You've gotten a good start to the project however I do recommend citing what you edit in and I feel the physical description is quite important to the background. Just for future reference. :D --KernOrisymbolHallowed are the Ori 15:35, April 14, 2015 (UTC)

Try to dig a bit through the dialogue file to find some new background. Sometimes adding just a short characteristic to start a sentence with isn't an improvement, it makes the flow of it become clunkier. Hey, thanks for your support on my request but Neko and Kern only needed to sign there because reconfirmation requests require three signatures in order to run. You'll be able to show support in a week when the votes start. JASPER//"Do you like hurting other people?"UserRichard 13:58, April 28, 2015 (UTC)

Patroller requestEdit

I'm going to deny your request, I'm afraid. You've not done enough editing, and I can understand that, as you will have higher priorities than work on the pages here. What I did notice, also playing a factor, is that you use 2 edits to add a reference, while you can do it in one edit. I get the feeling you're scraping the edits together to get promoted. Let it go for the time being and just see how it goes from here. Maybe in the summer or when you have more time and motivation it will happen. It needs to come sort of natural. WorkEdit

If you'd be looking for work to do, you can always ask me in chat, there's always editing to be done :D - Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 00:30, May 17, 2015 (UTC)

Weapon overview pagesEdit

I object with (the progress of) this whole project, as I've done in the past. I don't see it completed in the foreseeable future, which is worrying with Fallout 4 around the corner; we will exposed with such a large project in the works, having these overview pages in an inbetween stage for a period of years with this pace. Gunny is lacking time for it, as far as I know, and leaving such a big project in the hands of an inexperienced user, is not a good idea in my opinion. Think it's best to discuss it with the bureaucrats what we want to do with this, before you continue. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 20:35, May 18, 2015 (UTC)

I disagree. I think with Fallout 4 coming it is even MORE important we get this done, as (as proven by Gunny) it is needed so that we conform to our own rules. When my uni work is done (wednesday) I'll be more than happy to aid Sam, who while new has shown himself to be both committed and skilled. The show must go on, with or without gunny. You can leave the links to weapon pages on talk-, forum and userpages as they are. There's no point to changing it. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 15:05, May 19, 2015 (UTC)

Memorial VoteEdit

I have reopened the memorial vote. I have removed all votes, and all comments due to the unpleasantness and questions over what the vote was for. I have reframed it around the intention of the vote, and would ask that all participants read through my comments about removing the previous comments. This isn't directed at anyone, this just a message I'm sending all participants. This is a recording. Agent c (talk) 18:17, August 11, 2015 (UTC)

EditsEdit

I am not certain if Gunny will reply, for most people are absent (probably playing Fallout 4). However, I can guarantee you can watch out for other people's edits and de-cap necessary words (per that capitalization policy), edit out "you" or "player" with "Sole Survivor" or "player character", as well as watching out for vandals.

Unless you wanted to create new pages and add info, which is also reasonable. ☢ Energy X ☣ 17:25, November 12, 2015 (UTC)
