"Navel gazing" is defined by the dictionary as "useless or excessive self-contemplation" (imagine your head staring down as you think dejectedly). However, according to an old arcane encyclopedia I've got (my interests lie practically everywhere), "navel gazing" was a type of fortune reading where you could gaze at your own (or someone else's) navel and try to predict future events, based on the way it looked. I'm not joking! So two of the options I gave last week were correct, but only one was "mainstream dictionary" correct.
