Okay, apparently numbers don't work in blogs, so this is my edited review:

Synopsis[]

Alas, Babylon is a novel by American writer Pat Frank (the pen name of Harry Hart Frank). It was one of the first apocalyptic novels of the nuclear age and remains popular fifty years after it was first published. The novel deals with the effects of a nuclear war on the small town of Fort Repose, Florida, which is based upon the actual city of Mount Dora.

Based in Fort Repose, Florida, this novel follows Randy Bragg, his friends, family, and neighbours following a complete nuclear holocaust.

Review[]

I bought this novel a few years ago , around the time I finished the third fallout. While reading it, I wasn't exactly sure about how I was enjoying. Admittedly, the beginning of this book begins very slowly. Once I was finished, however, I realized that I had enjoyed the novel immensely. I was amazed at how the simple tone of the writing conveyed the various emotions of the characters, as well as showing what I believe to be a very accurate portrayal of a town before, during, and after a nuclear holocaust. One very crucial thing to the success of this novel was the brilliant description of the initial decay of society immediately following the bombs. Considering all these points, this was a very good read.

Comparison to the Fallout series[]

There are many comparable factors to the fallout series present in this novel. Set in the fifties, many cultural similarities exist (as fallout is set in a retro-future based on the 'fifties). The novel also shows the decay of society as the dust settles from the bombs. Without revealing too much information, I believe that this novel portrays an accurate representation of many factors present in the fallout universe.

Rating[]

Eight/Ten.
