The United States Geological Survey (USGS) was an agency of the United States Department of the Interior before the Great War.

Background[]

The United States Geological Survey was responsible for studying the landscape of the United States, its natural resources, and the natural hazards that may threaten it. One of the ways this was accomplished was by way of using survey markers for geolocation and land survey purposes. The scientific disciplines of biology, geography, geology, and hydrology were utilized to better understand how to harness and protect the environment.[2]

The agency placed survey markers at varying elevations throughout the former state of West Virginia, of which six can still be found. They also had an emergency system for seismic events in mine shafts, which went off in Appalachia when the bombs dropped.[3]

After the Great War, former American soldier and survivalist Randall Clark found refuge in Fallen Rock cave in Zion Canyon, which had been used as a USGS research station until the team left. Clark speculated that they hoped to find their families.[4]

Appearances[]

The United States Geological Survey is mentioned in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Honest Hearts and Fallout 76.
