Trinity was a encoding algorithm developed by Liam Binet, code named "Patriot" of the Institute.[1][2][3]
Background[]
The algorithm formed the basis of his attempts to contact the Commonwealth in 2283,[1] as he aided Generation 3 synth escapes without knowledge of the SRB, by embedding separate code pieces in each synth.[3]
The Railroad attempted to decrypt Trinity, initially without success until a message containing only "Mass Fusion" was deciphered by Tinker Tom.[2][4] This enabled the reading of future messages and began one way communication with the surface. Using the same methods within the Institute, contact was established with Patriot.[5][6]
Appearances[]
Trinity is mentioned only in Fallout 4.

The Sole Survivor: "A friend named Tinker Tom cracked your encryption."
Liam Binet: "He must've had some serious hardware to pull that off. Wow. Your message was only one word: "Friend". What did you mean by that?"

The Sole Survivor: "Trinity? What's that?"
Liam Binet: "Trinity is an encryption system, with a cipher or key cut up into many pieces. You need several pieces, in the correct order, to unlock it. I put a Trinity piece with every synth I helped escape. It was long shot, but I was hoping some good Samaritan would connect it all together."

Tinker Tom: "Oh, yeah, man. Definitely. Definitely. Well, maybe. Patriot's been sending us encrypted messages, you see. Took some doing, that Patriot's got brain, but I figured out how to duplicate it. So we use his own encryption to flag him down."
