Do you hear it? Does it speak to you!?

Trappers are insane cannibals that plague Mount Desert Island in 2287 in the Fallout 4 add-on Far Harbor.

Background[]

Once (relatively) normal denizens of the island, these people have gone insane from isolation, starvation, and long term exposure to the Fog. The trappers come from all walks of life: ordinary settler families,[1] hunters and fishers,[2] scavengers, and even bandits;[3] while this varies, many of them were already quite unfriendly to outsiders even before they were driven insane, at least according to Old Longfellow.[4]

Regardless of their origin, Fog-induced insanity has made the trappers invariably dangerous to everyone else on the island, and they now lay traps for people rather than wildlife. Having lost their minds, the trappers do not have any coherent hierarchy or organization, although some still stick together in small bands.[5][6][7] Some also continue to guard territory they believe is theirs, or which actually was once.[8] While mad, they are often still mentally capable to some extent, but they are highly possessive of their territory[9] and have no qualms about victimizing or cannibalizing other residents of the island.[10] They will, however, at least temporarily spare those willing to aid them.[11][12]

While the trappers may have once been acquaintances or even relatives to the harbormen, their insanity has severed any ties between the groups. Though some harbormen still hold compassion towards the trappers as victims of the island, they largely believe the trappers are better off dead for everyone else's benefit.[1] Far Harbor residents warn against even making eye contact with them.[13]

Gameplay attributes[]

Although the reason for their insanity may differ, trappers are for all intents and purposes the island's equivalent of raiders and behave virtually the same once combat is initiated. Just like the Commonwealth's highwaymen, trappers will attack on sight.

What sets these two enemy groups apart to some extent is the trappers' lack of drug-addled taunting, something Commonwealth raiders are very fond of doing even when faced with impossible odds. Trappers also do not seem to care much about each other, given that they express no emotion whatsoever when they witness members of their group being killed.

Another distinguishing feature is the trappers' apparently complete lack of female members. While the ranks of Commonwealth raiders are made up of men and women in equal measure, the trapper population on the island is entirely male, making them a tougher fight for a male Sole Survivor with Lady Killer than a female one with Black Widow.

In order to have a chance at surviving the island's hostile environment, trappers protect themselves with trapper armor or coastal armor, supplemented by an abundance of leather armor and metal armor pieces. For offense, they utilize standard raider gear, ranging from pipe guns over hunting rifles and combat rifles to exclusive Far Harbor equipment like lever-action rifles and harpoon guns. The occasional melee weapon may also be employed, often taking the form of meat hooks or, more rarely, pole hooks. Trappers make no use of energy weapons or irradiated gear, so having good ballistic damage resistance is enough to mitigate most of their threat potential.

Bases[]

Aside from the named locations mentioned above, numerous unmarked trapper camps are scattered all over the Island. They are usually occupied by two or three leveled trappers.

Variants[]

Trapper[]

FO4 Trapper

The weakest of their members of the trappers. They may be less resilient than their stronger comrades, but they often compensate their relative fragility with powerful weapons like lever-action rifles and harpoon guns.

Ruthless trapper[]

FO4FH Ruthless Trapper

The most experienced and ruthless of their ilk, ruthless trappers tend to be the primary threat in any given encounter with trappers. They usually wear the heaviest armor and carry extensively modified weaponry. While ruthless trappers typically serve as group leaders once they begin to appear, with increasing player level they gradually replace the other variants until trapper strongholds are populated almost entirely with ruthless trappers.

Notable members[]

Notes[]

The three non-hostile trappers who are part of the quest The Arrival can be killed with impunity. When they respawn after a couple of in-game days, they retain their neutral behavior and will only attack in self-defense.

References[]

  1. 1.0 1.1 Small Bertha: "Is the Lumber Mill safe now? People are getting anxious. A little... unstable."
The Sole Survivor: "Who owns the Lumber Mill?"
Small Bertha: "No one any more. There was a family there. They didn't make it. Why? Did you find anyone there?"
The Sole Survivor: "There's one survivor at the Lumber Mill. He's a trapper."
Small Bertha: "One Trapper. I... I think we can handle that."
The Sole Survivor: "Malcolm says he owns the Lumber Mill. Not you. Was he lying?"
Small Bertha: "I... We thought he was dead. Been that long in the Fog... Maybe it's better if he did die. We have people here that need a real home. People that think straight. People worth saving."
(The Sole Survivor's and Small Bertha's dialogue)
  2. Far Harbor loading screens: "Trappers were once ordinary fishers and hunters, but have been driven to madness by the horrors of the island and its radioactive Fog."
  3. 3.0 3.1 The Sole Survivor: "You mentioned before you're affected by radiation. Why would you choose to live in a place like this?"
Ware: "Sure beats where I came from. Before joining the family, I was a Trapper. Lived with a nasty bunch out in the Fog, barely scraping by. Kinda place you slept with a knife under your pillow to make sure no one stole your food. But one day, out hunting, we stumbled upon High Confessor Tektus and his crew on their way to a pilgrimage. We surrounded 'em, took 'em captive. Figured we could ransom them back for some grub and ammo. I pulled guard duty. And me and the High Confessor get to talking. You can probably figure out what happened next."
The Sole Survivor: "You turned on the Trappers?"
Ware: "Mh hmm. High Confessor started describing the life I could have at the Nucleus. With Atom. Three meals a day. Not having to worry about getting eaten in my sleep. Radiation wasn't even that much worse. Plus I had my brew to handle that. Ended up being a pretty easy decision. I helped the Children clean out the Trappers and started my new life here. So, something else I can do for ya?"
(The Sole Survivor's and Ware's dialogue)
  4. Old Longfellow: "See. The Fog can do a number on you. Gets you all turned around. Does somethin' to your brain. Trappers were mean to begin with, but now..."
(Old Longfellow's dialogue) Note: This is one of Old Longfellow's scripted lines during his escort in Walk in the Park.
  5. Cassie Dalton: "Trappers might look like us, but the island took their souls a long time ago. Now they're just hollowed-out madmen drifting in the Fog."
    (Cassie Dalton's dialogue)
  6. The Sole Survivor: "What's so special about the Fog on the island?"
Mitch: "Can't you feel it? Even here - as safe as anyone can be on this damned island. It's alive. You walk inland, and it'll blanket you up in no time. And if the clickety-click of the geiger don't get you... The madness will. The island will claim us all in the end."
The Sole Survivor: "The Fog can drive you crazy?"
Mitch: "Yes. It's not natural. The Trappers you find inland, some were always murderous louts. But many just got lost in the Fog. For too long. And your mind goes. If you have any sense return where you came from. And don't look back."
The Sole Survivor: "If it's so dangerous, why do you stay?"
Mitch: "This is our home. If you call yourself a proper man or woman you don't give up on that. Besides... We all got to die, might as well do it with your long knife deep in the belly of the beast that wronged you. Ha!"
(The Sole Survivor's and Mitch's dialogue)
  7. Old Longfellow: "Only difference between trappers an' gunners is that gunners ain't realized they're crazy yet."
"Think all them weapons an' tattoos make these gunners feel safe?"
"Gunners like to think they're tough, but they die just as easy as everythin' else."
"Best thing about killin' gunners is all that ammo they kindly donate."
"Guns an' armor can't hide cowardice, and that's just what gunners are. Cowards."
    (Old Longfellow's dialogue)
  8. The Sole Survivor: "Who are you?"
Malcolm: "My name... My name... It's Malcolm. Malcolm. I own this land. Fog came and I didn't leave. Started breathing it in deep. Made peace with it. Haha."
(The Sole Survivor's and Malcolm's dialogue)
  9. The Sole Survivor: "Some people in Far Harbor would like to settle here. Maybe you could share?"
Malcolm: "Share? This is my land! Keep the outsiders away! Or... Ha. Let them come. Send them to me. Hehehe. Send all of them to me. And then I'll hunt 'em, salvage their gear, cut the meat. Then toss the remains for the Fog. What do you say? Got caps. Make it worth your while."
(The Sole Survivor's and Malcolm's dialogue)
  10. The Sole Survivor: "You're going to eat them?"
Malcolm: "Belly gets awful empty in the Fog. To me, they're meat, you're meat. All of us are."
(The Sole Survivor's and Malcolm's dialogue)
  11. Malcolm: "You got 'em... You got them shamblers. All dead... Heh. Fog's quiet. The land's mine again. For what you done - you can leave. Leave before I need to go a-huntin' and kill."
    (Malcolm's dialogue)
  12. Malcolm: "Got the hunger. No, no. You helped me. Go!"
    (Malcolm's dialogue)
  13. Harborman: "Never look a Trapper in the eyes. They're... something else."
    (Harbormen's dialogue)
