This page is about the robot type that appears in Old World Blues. For the faction that appears in Old World Blues, see Think Tank (faction). For the location that appears in Old World Blues, see The Think Tank. |
A think tank is a unique robot encountered in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Old World Blues.
Background[]
Sometime prior to the Great War, the scientists of Big MT devised a project that sought to develop a fusion of organic and synthetic that would allow a disembodied human brain to live and continue the pursuit of technological advancement long past the expiration of the human body. The project's primary goal was the preservation of the six top executives in the event that the predicted nuclear holocaust served to destroy the rest of civilization. Sometime following the bombs dropping, the project succeeded in transplanting the brains of the executives, now called the "Think Tank" and their robotic shells sharing that name.
Sometime prior to 2281, the human that became Doctor Mobius turned against his colleagues, fearing that their depraved and amoral experimentation would endanger the inhabitants of the post-War wasteland. Via his own think tank shell, Mobius hacked the other five members of the Think Tank, erasing their memories and awareness of the world beyond the Big MT facility and imprisoning them both mentally via a recursion loop in their cognitive programming and physically via the radar fence, as well as giving them all new names that helped enforce the loop: his own name of Mobius, Klein, Dala, 0, 8, and Borous.
Characteristics[]
Consisting of a robotic sphere-shaped body housing a human brain, with three monitors attached to the robot's chassis, a think tank uses the same principle as a robobrain: the brain is held inside a hardened glass container at the top of the robotic body, suspended in pressurized bio med gel (which can take many colors). However, unlike a typical robobrain, the brain within a think tank never had its memory wiped, retaining all memories and emotions it would have had prior to becoming a think tank. The robotic body has three monitors varying in scale protruding from the robot's chassis. Two of these monitors depict eyes and the other depicts a mouth. In addition to allowing a person to continue living by using their brain as a power source, it provides a container and mobile platform so the operating human brain may observe and approach various items. Like eyebots, think tanks levitate by means of an unspecified propulsion system.
They are able to communicate verbally due to a voice module that is integrated into the robotic chassis and connected to the brain. If damaged, the think tank can continue to communicate but only through radio waves. Despite not being designed for fighting, their robotic shells are said to be equipped with "an arsenal of vivisectors, brainial beams, and a rather nasty WooEEEOooWooEEEOoo ray that can make your atoms do a happy dance" for self-defense.[1]
Notes[]
- All think tanks have an identical bodily appearance; the only differences can be found in the coloration of the container and size of the monitors. Mobius' robotic body appears severely damaged and partially rusted, with his right eye monitor smashed.
- Most think tanks have identical stats, with 125 Hit Points and 15 DT. Klein and Mobius are significantly tougher than the other think tanks, leveling with the Courier and having a maximum Hit Point total of 500 for Klein and 700 for Mobius.
- Their weapons do 38 damage per hit and 94 damage per second.
- Think tanks take increased damage from shots to their chassis, which cause 40% more damage than normal. They take normal damage from shots to their weapon or eye monitors and decreased damage from shots to their mouth monitor.
- Killing a think tank counts towards the Abominable challenge.
- The think tanks are capable of displaying emotion to a certain extent. The best example is the retraction and shakes of their eye and mouth monitors, particularly when irritated.
- Even though it is repeatedly mentioned that the think tank shells possess "vivisectors," no such weapon is used by the Think Tank if they are attacked during the quest Old World Blues.
Appearances[]
Think tanks appear only in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Old World Blues They would have also appeared in Van Buren, the canceled Fallout 3 by Black Isle Studios.
Behind the scenes[]
In Fallout Tactics, a similar robobrain-like robot appears, the humanoid brain bot. An experiment was used on Simon Barnaky by the humanoid robots of the Calculator, in which his brain was implanted into a large robotic suit and connected to a robotic program. But compared to the think tank robots, only Barnaky's temperament and a part of his previous consciousness remained, the robotic programming was superior and the humanoid brain bot had trouble displaying human emotions and remembering its feelings and personal life.

Mobius: "That will be difficult. It would be like fighting five scaled down versions of me that have better depth perception. And they have an arsenal of vivisectors, brainial beams, and a rather nasty WooEEEOooWooEEEOoo ray that can make your atoms do a happy dance. If you could survive those highly-improbable odds and ends, then deceasing them is definitely an option. Although I doubt killing them would do anything except make you feel better. Or let you brag to other humans about your primal violent-ness-ness."
