Once a member of the affluent Croup family, Theodore prayed for something to wipe away the family debt incurred in a bad stock market trade. When he watched the mushroom clouds rising, he thought that it was someone's sick joke. Unprepared to survive though a nuclear attack, he and his family would succumb to the effects of radiation poisoning, or at least partially. When he awoke the next morning, he discovered that not only had the majority of his facial features slid off in his sleep but also that his family was literally shambling about the premises.
Over January and February of 2078, he gathered the shuffling remains of his family together and locked them in the basement, unable to bring himself to end their suffering and look for other survivors. Theodore had met both ghouls and humans alike who all shared the experience of ending those who turned into monsters and tried to kill the non-feral survivors. Likewise, he noticed that the ferals wouldn't attack other ghouls.
Unable to let go, he came to the conclusion that the old world was dead and they all could start over again without their debt, going about to try and reeducate his family; to talk, function and act like normal people again, just like him. For the next two hundred years he tried his best; however, around 2287, his frustration boiled over. After spending all that time trying to teach these creatures how to act human, he had nothing to show for it, except maybe that his cousin James was able to spot the difference between a salad fork and a regular fork. Theodore was unsure if James just got lucky. As for his aunt Belinda, he couldn't reach her at all, his frustration boiling over to the point he swore that if she didn't talk soon he would "bust her head." He went through with this act, and the remains of his family finally ended his life.
