Maggie,
You asked for a story for your birthday, well, here's one. The day that changed everything.
Herman found him, the man from Athens, the one we'd later call Professor. Nearly shot him on the spot. It was the day everything changed for us. No, I wasn't there, but I heard about it
It was the early days, when Herman and his crew were moving out from West Virginia into Ohio. They hadn't been here before, and we had no people, no ties. They'd hit a small Army depot or something, made off with some supplies, probably left more than a few bodies. Took a good haul.
It wasn't as bad then, but it was still hard going. In those days things were easier to come by. You could still find people on the roads. You'd find people fleeing their towns, towing their keepsakes, usually sick with fear and desperate to find somewhere safe. Sometimes they were already injured. Easy pickings.
They'd come in little groups, sometimes families. Never much of a threat. But the old man was different: he was alone. Just pulling a little wagon of books and some lab stuff or something.
