Lucia's fury seemed to be without end, until we discovered the mansion. Suddenly all the complaints about the resort washed away, replaced by a childlike wonder at the opulence before us. She would touch everything in the house, from velvets to linens, finding each new fabric softer than the last.
Javier and I stopped to examine the beds, when we were interrupted by a strange screeching and clawing, some unnatural sound echoing in the innards of the house. I dropped my lunch and rushed to Lucia, but found her swiveling idly on a bar stool, without a care in the world. When I relayed my concerns, she would not brook any slander of the house, blaming the noise on the creak of its timeworn walls.
Her enthusiasm wore off, however, when I told her the house did not suit us. We would only stay the night.
Truth to be told, the noises are a convenient excuse. It's not the ghosts in the house that concern me, it's everything else.
The Third Law states, "Feed not for pleasure; partake only to nourish. This is our dignity." The house entices all who reside in it. Its decadence is plain. Those who live in it, live to feed. Javier agrees.
