The first lead proved fruitful. Stunning, really. Lucia dragged Javier by the arm to the edge of the pier, and danced with him on the docks as the moonlight bled across the pond.
Yet while the retreat is beautiful, this cannot be our permanent home. The stars watch over us now, but come morning, the sun will bake the sky and burn the soul.
After we fed, I broke the news to the others, and Lucia was predictably unhappy. She wanted to scream at me, I could tell, but settled for storming off to her quarters. I looked to Javier, to see if there was any waver; a show of weakness where he betrayed his true thoughts. I have seen it in others in the Family when tempted, be it food or paradise. It is a moment of longing, a hope that we might defy the laws Vance set forth.
Instead, he quoted the Fourth law and said, "Seek not the sun's light; embrace only the shadows. This is our refuge."
We soldier on.
