The Devil's Blood is a chem in Fallout 76, introduced in the Expeditions: Atlantic City update part one, Boardwalk Paradise. It is a unique designer drug controlled exclusively by the Lombardi Family in Atlantic City.[1]
Background[]
The Devil's Blood is a local specialty of Atlantic City, and is not well known outside of the city, as it is only meant for the "high rollers." Jack Hunter describes his encounter with the Devil's Blood as one hit resulting in a "horrifyingly glorious" trip, creating the feeling of reaching out for a life that had been kept from him, but not quite grasping it. This created a sense of near-immediate addiction, that not even addictol could cure, and that "maybe nothing [would]." Hunter saw his experience with the Devil's Blood as a rebellious spoiling of the chem's exclusivity.[2]
The Devil's Blood is a narcotic with an extraordinary chemical makeup that is similar to an opioid at a glance. However, it combines the qualities of both a stimulant and a depressant, resulting in a combination of euphoria and mental stimulation, while simultaneously relaxing the body. It is also incredibly addictive, regardless of the ability of the user.[3] Upon consumption, the Blood directly stimulates the ventromedial prefrontal cortex of the brain (functionally the pleasure center of the brain), triggering an overwhelming sensation of pleasure. Even a single dose is enough to create a strong desire to use the substance, leading to reliance in short order.[4] Continued use of the Blood eventually degrades mental faculties, resulting in hallucinations, fatigue, and migraines.[5] Eventually, even basic spelling ability degrades, turning the user into a habitual victim.[6]
However, the high remains known as a stuff of legends and reserved for the most affluent clientele of the Casino Quarter.[7] Those who can afford it are said to "dance with the devil".[8] The Showmen also take the drug in order to unlock their "true potential," or so Mother Charlotte claims.[9]
Discovery[]
While the idea of the drug being actually siphoned from someone's blood is considered ridiculous and just a marketing move,[10] it's actually closer to the truth than many would prefer to believe. It is obtained from the blood of a Jersey Devil hunted down by Antonio Russo years earlier, accidentally discovered by his affiliated chemist. They came up with a way to synthesize the drug, which was still prohibitively expensive, but readily available, becoming a major source of wealth for the post-War Lombardi Family.[11]
Appearances[]
The Devil's Blood was first mentioned in A Night at the Neapolitan, a holotape added in Fallout 76, introduced in the Once in a Blue Moon update. It physically appears in Expeditions: Atlantic City second update, America's Playground.

Vin Russo: "It's a designer drug. Typically only accessible to high society, and to the people that source it: the mob. You'll have to find one of them. See what you can negotiate."

A Vault Dweller: " 'Danced with the devil'? What does that mean?"
Evelyn Russo: "Those who fancy themselves part of the Atlantic City 'high life' have access to a special intoxicant. They drink the Devil's Blood. I should have paid more attention. Must be the stress of the move got to her."

- ↑ Evelyn Russo: "Marketing tactics. What would you name a drug that's supposed to be the ultimate temptation? Would you call it 'Innocent Angel Milk'? Siphoning blood... Hmph. No sensible business person would put in all that effort, even if the Jersey Devil was real."
(Evelyn Russo's dialogue) - ↑ A Vault Dweller: "Devil's Blood is made from the actual blood of the Jersey Devil?"
Antonio Russo: "It was, initially. Nowadays it's just formulated with synthetic materials to achieve the same effect. Even the synthetic shit is expensive to get your hands on. Hence why it's so...exclusive."
