“In some conversations, you gain the ability to initiate combat while terrifying a mob of opponents, sending them fleeing away for safety.”— in-game description
Terrifying Presence is a perk in Fallout: New Vegas.
Effects[]
Taking this perk unlocks unique dialogue options with certain NPCs that typically allow for one to begin a combat encounter with all enemies fleeing instead of attacking for 5 seconds.
Interactions that require the Terrifying Presence perk[]
- Talking to Ranger Milo and being warned about the Legion takeover at Nelson, triggering Back in Your Own Backyard.
- During Debt Collector, talking to Grecks after already obtaining his debt of caps to the Garret Twins.
- During Birds of a Feather, after bringing Cass to the Silver Rush and talking about Jean-Baptiste Cutting's plan to kill her.
- Note: this only works temporarily as continuing the quest requires that Cass be killed and Heartache by the Number failed whereas completing that quest will permanently antagonize the Van Graffs.
- During I Could Make You Care, after the second failed conversation with the Hidden Valley bunker's elder, then encountering the paladins outside the bunker or at the Follower's outpost (depending on the choice for Veronica to stay or leave).
- During Ring-a-Ding-Ding!, if Benny is not killed on the casino floor instead persuaded to go up to his private suite alone, when he asks about their survival in Goodsprings.
- Talking to Vulpes Inculta in Nipton and triggering Cold, Cold Heart.
- Note: This method of killing Vulpes garners less Legion infamy (Neutral if no reputation has been gained or lost beforehand) at the cost of no Karma gain.
- Talking to the Legion explorer outside of Nelson (unavailable with a Vilified reputation with the Legion, as they attack immediately).
- During Render Unto Caesar, when first meeting Caesar at The Fort.
- At HELIOS One and being stopped by Lt. Haggerty. Two mutually exclusive options occur if one immediately is hostile or alternately first tells Haggerty they want to explore the place.
- During I Put a Spell on You when working with the Legion, talking to Pvt. Davey Crenshaw to frame him for the monorail's destruction. Two exclusive options occur if one is outright hostile[1] or more subtle.[2]
- During Someone to Watch Over Me, talking to Greasy Johnny to evict him for Crandon.
- During I Fought the Law, two different instances: talking to the disguised bounty hunter and talking to Chavez while looking to kill him for Eddie.
- During How Little We Know, when trying to find Cachino and then talking to the Gomorrah floor manager.
- During Talent Pool, when talking to James Garret to get Hadrian released from his contract in the Atomic Wrangler Casino.
- During The Star Showdown, when talking to Tomas or Jacklyn (depending on who lives through the initial gunfight) and wanting to get their amount of Sunset Sarsaparilla star bottle caps.
- During Oh My Papa, when confronted by the legionaries sent by Karl (occurs twice).
- Mixed Signals, talking to Christine and wanting her to enter the elevator in the switching station instead of using the remote maintenance terminal.
- Note: This will prevent a peaceful conclusion to Christine's story in Dead Money.

Behind the scenes[]
Joshua Sawyer came up with the perk but regrets not giving Terrifying Presence any general combat use, as well as not addressing its inconsistent implementation into conversations. As it stands, the perk is very special-case.[3]
