Tarot is a type of playing card deck that emerged in Europe around the 15th century. The cards started being used for various occult purposes starting in the late 18th century, based on unsubstantiated claims about them being related to the ancient Egyptian Book of Thoth. The practice endured for the next centuries, and even by the late 23rd century its practitioners could be found in the wasteland.[1]

Divination[]

Divination is practiced by taking a tarot deck and shuffling the cards, then drawing them. The allegorical meaning of the cards is interpreted by the practitioner, based on available knowledge, to provide advice or foresee the future.[2]

Known deck cards are illustrated in a modern style, reflecting the technologies of the time. The depictions of the cards in Major Arcana are:

  • The Fool (0): A man dancing on a nuclear warhead.[3]
  • The Emperor (IV): A man in a suit with a scepter.[4]
  • The Hierophant (V): A man in a lab coat with a computer in one hand. It represents wisdom.[5]
  • The Tower (XVI): A radio tower.[4]

In Minor Arcana:

  • Prince of Wands: Man in power armor. It represents nobility.[5]
  • Prince of Swords: Man with a vibro-blade and a flag.[6]
