Wow[]

This game is officially godly. Nukey (talk) 23:20, October 7, 2010 (UTC)

Uh yeah! So many items to choose from!--Radraider 23:27, October 7, 2010 (UTC)

Hopefully the scope won't be off like in FO3 TJbrena 16:29, October 15, 2010 (UTC)

Ok so, I only have 37 into Energy Weapons skill (100 Guns) and it claims to do 108DMG/386DPS and 188/628 with full charge rounds, which is f'ing insane. I had not really used Energy Weapons during my game, but I did a Sneak(100) Crit. Headshot on Lakelurk and I got the Blast Mastery achievement. The scope is spot on now too, unlike F3. That was with the the YCS/186_Gauss_rifle BTW, the talk page for that gun links here. --Webley 05:37, October 28, 2010 (UTC)

Great! Thanks for the update on the gun's accuracy Webley! TJbrena 16:14, November 1, 2010 (UTC)

I found out that I repaired a laser rifle with this beauty several HOURS ago. DAMN!! I have to do all the stuff I did again or I will have to live without it. I think I'm going for the first but I can't look at fallout anymore for a few days I think... Lol double wasted my day :( --94.212.252.40 18:12, November 28, 2010 (UTC)

i am doing about 252DMG/816DPS with rapid reload, 100 energy, lord death(3), MC cells, bloody mess, fast shot, and 9 perception.

Can anyone explain why I'm only doing 126dmg per shot even though I have 75 energy weapons meet the strenght requirement and full condition? What am I missing here?--MCmuffin 15:13, March 10, 2011 (UTC)

Background[]

Is that accurate? Where did that information come from?

  • It's hardly the only Something Awful reference to appear in Fallout: New Vegas (see also: the four balls on the edge of a cliff that appear if you have the Wild Wasteland trait). Josh E. Sawyer is a forums regular there (I'm not going to post his username here, although it's easy to find with a bit of Google work), and has been known to include similar references in previous games (such as the "Kyanka. Writer of Humorous Stories." tombstone in Icewind Dale II). -LLJKTechnogeek 01:09, February 9, 2011 (UTC)

Wild Wasteland[]

So you cant get this weapon with the Wild Wasteland???? too bad D=

You can get regular Gauss rifles, just not the unique one. Nitty Tok. 02:42, October 25, 2010 (UTC)
still it's a shame about losing out on the best weapon in the game only to get another slightly worse weapon with extremely limited ammo

If the weapon appears only WITHOUT the Wild Wasteland trait why the article is marked as containing a Wild Wasteland-based non-canon info??? I'd better fix this. veryblackravenTalk 20:09, November 8, 2010 (UTC)

Gauss Rifle appears every time, it's the unique variant YCS/186 that only appears with the WW perk.--Jonathan Strange 20:38, November 8, 2010 (UTC)
No, no no! YCS/186 only appears without the Wild Wasteland trait; players with Wild Wasteland get the Alien blaster instead. --Kris User Hola 21:32, November 8, 2010 (UTC)
Yes, you are correct. At first I didn't understand why are you mentioning Alien Blaster on Gauss Rifle talk page, but then I was like "...ooh!".--Jonathan Strange 21:39, November 8, 2010 (UTC)

YCS/186[]

I picked this up the other day, this is also where I discovered near Sloan there are enough deathclaws to gain Abominable (killing the ones in the quarry, and near Junction 15 Railway Station). This gun carried me through that entire quest at lvl 11. Mictlantecuhtli 00:11, November 2, 2010 (UTC)

YCS-186 best energy rifle ever O_O --Dan67 (talk) 18:52, January 28, 2013 (UTC)

The info box is only displaying 186 instead of the full name YCS/186. Dunno what the problem is so I can't fix it. KnightShadePrime (talk) 23:09, May 2, 2020 (UTC)

Fixed it. The Infobox uses code that automatically strips out the slash, which backfires in the rare circumstance it's included in the name. If you want to fix it, you can use | name = to override the display, coupled with HTML codes to display special characters (eg. & #47 ; for /). Hope that helps! notes section[]

its kind of dumb to compare it to the anti-material rifle for guns snipers, because anyone who knows anything is going to use a real sniper rifle with hand loader shells, so the strength requirement thing is kind of meaningless.

anyways, this is a powerful weapon for sure, but in comparison to a sniper it has a better base damage, but a slow rate of fire because of reloading after every shot instead of having a clip and being semi-auto, and it has a much worse crit rate.

its not really an attractive alternative for a guns sniper to invest a ton of points into energy weapons for, especially considering i havent ran into a single enemy in the game who can survive a single sneak attack critical with hand loaded shells and better criticals perk.

this weapon is the sniper for people who invest in energy weapons instead of guns, someone who has high guns doesnt need to invest into energy weapons, at all, and vice versa.

its to compensate for the lower skill points in new vegas. by the time you get done with all of your skills like lockpick, science, repair, speech, medicine, survival, and so on you dont have a lot of points left over for multiple weapons, and you are best off choosing one of guns or energy weapons, but not both.

For characters looking to start an energy sniper weapon handling (or high strength) isn't required for this gun, letting them place points elsewhere (luck, etc) or they can use any energy weapon with weapon handling and 5 strength plus the implant (6). The YCS has a large crit bonus over the anti-materiel rifle, and the reload can be offset somewhat with agility chems and rapid reload. I doubt you can one shot every creature as even the YCS can't accomplish that with max charge rounds and sneak attack criticals. Gun based sniper rifles also don't have the benefit of Meltdown, which inflicts sizeable damage on groups of enemies. So energy snipers save on perk slots and SPECIAL points, which is an acceptable thing to note. Mictlantecuhtli 18:49, November 14, 2010 (UTC)

is IT capable of 1 shotting legendary deathclaw on very hard[]

I have energy weapon at 100, weapon condition at 100% with max charge and following perks at increases damage lord death rank 1, Abominable rank 1 aim at head of course.

100 Energy Weapons, 100% Condition, Max Charge, Lord Death (Max), Abominable (Max), Bloody Mess, Psycho, Sneak attack critical (no Stealth Girl though), Headshot (Outside of VATS/in VATS), Normal Difficulty - Not a one shot kill, at what I would generously call medium range (bend in the tunnel it can get stuck in). Lately though I have noticed hits on some enemies and their lifebar flashes but no damage is inflicted, as if I had hit a held weapon. It doesnt fly out of their hands though and the shots were aimed at the head of a stationary target, the lack of hit detection has also increased on the save file.

Well it worked for me, 1 shot in very hard no problem, you probably missed the head. However I also noticed sometimes no damage is dealt with sneak critical, can also happen with other weapons (sniper rifle and all-american, i guess all weapons). The reason is you have hit the weapon and u can't damage an undrawn weapon.

I can sorta prove it. When i was trying to get La Longue Carabine by shooting it out of the guy's hand. It didn't work and i had to reload save repeatly untill i attacked with first first and target gun after it is drawn. Then the gun went flying out of his hand with 2 hits in VATS.

I have learned to aim at the leg instead, or when target is still, the head. only aim at torso if target is facing you, with the hostered weaopn on it's back. Never had a sneak shot doing 0 damage to creatures without any weapons.137.186.66.8

I'm pretty sure I hit the head both times, since I did it in and out of VATS. The most damage it took each time was around 7 bars of health, I havent gotten around to trying Pew Pew yet though. I got sidetracked with my thermic lance character (which can kill the legendary deathclaw easil). It should die in around 2.9-3 seconds using regular automatic attacks but it takes longer. Has anyone checked the GECK to see if the legendary deathclaw also has damage resistance? Mictlantecuhtli 10:56, November 20, 2010 (UTC)

gauss rifle and variants has lower damage in VATS, sneak attacks have infitite AP137.186.66.8

I killed Legate Lanius in one shot from this on Hard Difficulty (100 Energy Weapons, 100 Condition, Bloody Mess, Sneak Critical, Better Criticals, Confirmed Bachelor, Psycho, Slasher, and Lord Death Rank 2) and he has more health than a Legendary Deathclaw.

That means very little, since humans have more damage bonuses against them. Living Anatomy, Gender/Sexual Preference perks, etc. Against Deathclaws there are few ranged bonus damage perks, Purifier for instance is melee only. The numbers show you should be able to one shot it with this gun, though it doesn't occur on normal difficulty as I said above (I know I hit its head, I didn't miss, etc). I have noticed recently however they added the DT penetration to energy weapon ammo and have weakened the Legendary deathclaw in a patch, as it used to have 900+ hit points. That may be why people can now one shot it, I haven't gotten back to that point of the game and I am using a character inadequate for energy weapon use (thermic lance, throwing spears). Mictlantecuhtli 13:31, July 4, 2011 (UTC)
Just trid this, and no it does not one shot the legendary deathclaw. Even with max charge ammo, neither does Pew Pew. Mictlantecuhtli 19:58, July 29, 2011 (UTC)
Ignoring DT, to sneak attack critical for 900 damage on very-hard, you would need to do base damage of 450 before considering difficulty and sneak/head multipliers.
With Better criticals(+50% only applies to the critical bonus damage), Lord Death 3, Bloody Mess, Abominable 3, and Lucky to be alive(I am assuming this one the bonus applies to the whole mess), you get 443. Camerader-E or lonesome road perk pushes you over the edge, so yes, theorycrafting, you could do 900 damage on V-HARD if you had
  • Better Criticals
  • Lord Death 3
  • Bloody Mess
  • Abominable 3
  • Lucky to be Alive
  • Camerader-E/Lonesome Road
You would also, of course, need to get a sneak attack to the head, have the weapon in perfect condition, and have 100 E-Weapons skill... or you could just use psycho and get a nice +25% in there (assuming it works as advertised on ranged damage), for a total of 1218 give or take a bit of rounding, assuming your target HAS a head. According to the wiki, the LDC has 1000HP, which means level up and take your psycho, kiddies, oh, and have ALL the DLCs for level 50. As I have it on my 360, not my PC, this is theorycrafting, not tested. If the Lucky to be Alive only applies to the critical portion of the damage, no dice on doing 1000 damage unless you abuse the double perks glitch all the way to level 50, in which case, maybe.50.71.99.254 10:14, July 6, 2012 (UTC)

Ammo[]

I'd almost say that the .50 MG ammo for the Anti-materiel rifle is easier to find than MF cells are, adjusted for the ammo use per shot of the YCS/186 or other Gauss rifles. It's sometimes hard to keep a laser rifle stocked with ammo especially at the beginning of the game, so you'd need to dedicate all your MF cells to the Gauss rifle to ensure you keep a good supply, or do regular raids on the Fiends and become good friends with the Brotherhood of Steel. I've even resorted to buying bulk Small Energy Cells for my sidearm (Plasma Defender) and converting all regular SEC and ECP to MFC at workbenches to use in my laser rifle and multiplas rifle. --Kris User Hola 14:37, December 4, 2010 (UTC)

Yep that's why I removed the note about the ammo. Mictlantecuhtli 14:44, December 4, 2010 (UTC)
And that removal is what prompted this comment in the first place :D --Kris User Hola 14:54, December 4, 2010 (UTC)

My Latest courier is always extremely well stocked on MF cells (2000+ at lvl 30). She's a Vigilant Recycler, and has a fantastic supplier, the Great_Khan_armorer. BOS knight Torres (weirdly) cannot keep up with the Khans when it comes to Energy Weapon ammo. --DanTheHitman 08:42, December 7, 2010 (UTC)

My primary energy weapons character has 6,329 microfusion cells, on top of buying ammo I also took Scrounger and pickpocket drained cells, casings, etc every chance I get. Speaking of which, has anyone made a note about drained cells, spent casings, etc not being part of the normal stealing formula (you never fail to take them and there's no karma loss). Mictlantecuhtli 14:36, December 7, 2010 (UTC)

I bypassed the storyline telling me to go south, and instead sneaked passed the deathclaws near sloan by spidermanning my way along the mountain north of Neil's shack, and went to get this beaut right at the start of the game. I never really had much trouble with low ammo, since it kills just about everthing in one shot anyway. I'm currently carrying about 2000 MF cells, I could stop picking them up and still comfortably kill everthing in the game. plus, you can just convert all of your Energy Cells and Electron Charge Packs into MF cells at work benches, giving you plenty of ammo for this beat stick of a gun.

AP glitch[]

I've tested this in-game on my xbox and it is correct. It also happens with the Gauss Rifle. Whether it's an attempt at keeping this gun from being too good, or just a mistake, that 50/40 AP glitch is correct.

nm, apperently there is some multiplier to AP that doesn't really make sense, but i guess this is normal

ITS RUST AND SAND BUILD-UP ON THE WEAPON NOT CAMO JEEZ!!!

its the AP cost to reload the weapon which is about 6

Damage[]

This article says it deals a maximum of about 151 damage per shot with all related perks, but I've got it dealing 156 damage per shot (100 Energy Weapons, 100 Condition, Bloody Mess, and Lord Death Rank 2).

Because the Pip-boy is FUBAR, it shows the damage with perks that don't affect all targets (ie: Lady Killer etc) User:AvatarUser talk:Avatar 02:31, March 21, 2011 (UTC)

So about that reference...[]

I guess the YCS subforum that the weapon referenced no longer exists. Awkward! (Well I guess the goldmine's still there.) <SIGNATURE> 21:41, June 4, 2011 (UTC)

Trait Reselecting[]

So, in Old World Blues you are given a chance to reselect your traits, does that mean you can have both YCS/186 and Alien Blaster? i.e. you take Wild Wasteland, grab the Alien Blaster, head to Big MT and select another trait, then return and the mercenaries will be there. Or will it not spawn the Mercenaries and the weapons is based on what traits you had when you first reached the camp/space ship?

It will spawn one set based on which trait you had when you first arrived in that area. It will not spawn a new set if you change your traits and return to the area. You could, in theory, select to not have the trait, go get the YCS/186, then do the trait respec to get the trait but that wouldn't allow for having the Alien Blaster AND the YCS, it would simply allow for having the YCS along with the Wild Wasteland trait in general. --Kris User Hola 15:07, August 27, 2011 (UTC)

alien blaster[]

can i get it if i switch to ww in owb after getting this? or is it still an either/or choice?

glitch[]

you know the glitch where the rifle does not fire anythink but still uses the ammo how often does that happen like once in 5 shots or like 1 in 20 shots. It depends. 15:39, October 13, 2011 (UTC)

depends on what

when i play it is about 1 in every 50 what do you think.

Can someone eslse say is it once every 50 shots or less or more.

:([]

i sold this because i was desperate for caps and now i want it back. i dont know who i sold it to Necro

Animation bug[]

Has anyone else had a weird bug where the YCS just seems to be floating in mid air when you equip it in 3rd person? You can still shoot it but just not where you're aiming.
