This article claims that captives "despawn" when they leave the player's line of sight. This is not true. I freed a captive from the camp near the Jefferson memorial, then found her mangled body at the super mutant site on the other side of the big yellow bridge from the raider camp and the citadel an hour later. I most definitely did not have a line of sight to that location. (I also swore vengeance on every super mutant in the wasteland for this tragic iniquity, but that's beside the point.)

I tried several times to escort a captive after freeing him, but they seem to attract all sort of critters and always get killed, they are very weak, don't fight and can't be equipped with any armor or weapon as they can't be reverse-pickpocketted. Even with the solid escort (supported by companions) they always got killed. So don't care to free them anymore if it is only to get them killed.

Enslavement

Has anyone figured out how to enslave captives or if you can even enslave them at all? The Mesmetron works on them but when they're stunned, it won't let me talk to them and they shortly after become hostile.

It doesn't look like they can be enslaved. OverLord of Chaos 10:55, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

Where do the captives go ?

I tried several times to escort a captive after freeing him, but they seem to attract all sort of critters and always get killed, they are very weak, don't fight and can't be equipped with any armor or weapon as they can't be reverse-pickpocketted. Even with the solid escort (supported by companions) they always got killed. So don't care to free them anymore if it is only to get them killed. Where do they run if someone was able to keep one of them alive ?

They run around...alot. Eventually my one went north and exited the wastelands

I followed the captive in between the Jefferson Memorial and Rivet City after being rescued, then modded the Damage Resistance, gave good armor, gave weapons and ammo, etc, via the console. Followed him for about an hour (real time) and proceeded in a zigzag pattern through the left side of the Potomac River, and went through the marked location where you find Wehrner's radio tower. After that, he went up north, out of bounds and started to fall into the land, as if it was quicksand. After that, I never saw him again. I don't know if this is helpful or not. Captives are there just for good karma, I guess. (May 19th, 2009 - 7:44 PM(CentralUS)

My Captive ran from the Hallowed Moors Cemetery to Big Town, where he was killed by an Enclave soldier.

Sometimes they travel to your bottlecap mines that you placed halfway across the map (and forgot about) and make you facepalm for following them so long. :) True story, got negative karma out of that one.
