Only thing I know is the weight of the armor (helmet + body armor) change something. Light, Medium or Heavy change things only for perks. One light armor (NCR trooper fatigues: 26) weight more than some medium (Christine's COS recon armor: 20). I move with my T-51b (with silent running) and I've been spotted a lot, so yeah there a difference, how much I don't know that is why I'm in this talk, the geek calculation didn't help, since I don't have example for the variable. Also, I have the radio turn on. In Fallout 3, it worked well, in NV not so much. I think the game is more Harsh on the sneak. Sneaking and running

I have never been able to run in fallout 3 while sneaking (crawling faster, yes, but running no). Could someone please confirm that it is possible to run while sneaking and give instructions as to how to do so.

The "crawling faster" is exactly what is considered "running" while sneaking. If you were hoping that "running while sneaking" meant something identical to running while standing, you are unfortunately mistaken. The difference in speed, however, is fairly negligible in the long run.

Weight and Value w/ Pickpocketing

I'm almost 100% positive that weight and item value do factor into the ability to pickpocket an item, as it factors its way into the same ability in Oblivion. Seeing as both games are made by Bethesda, I don't see why they woujld truly be any different in that aspect. 76.114.208.47 18:27, November 14, 2009 (UTC)

I'm 100% sure that item value is a big factor, try it on anyone - Giver Casidin some scrap metal anc pickpocket that=easy, give him the alien blaster and pickpocket that=almost impossible Setimir92 12:27, November 15, 2009 (UTC)

Losing Red crosshairs?

Is there anyway to lose the red crosshairs on items you've already stolen? I have some unique weapons but they were stolen and still appear red when I try to pick them up. Now I don't get penalized or "caught" if I pick them up again, but I'd just like to lose the red. --Clean Up 15:06, 1 August 2009 (UTC)

Hei Gui Stealth Suit

Should information about the Chinese Stealth Suit be included in this page yet? It's not even known if the player will even have access to it (according to its article), or even how it works. --MadDawg2552 16:05, 23 January 2009 (UTC)

Looks like it will be included in Anchorage, so the link is fine.

Effect of armor weight on sneak

Does anyone have a rough guide to how much armor weight affects sneaking? The article says it matters, but gives no clue as to how important it is relative to other factors. I'm contemplating a minimal kill character (we'll assume trauma from killing the initial radroach made him/her a pacifist). Since I will be avoiding combat, good protection isn't very important (though of course I'll carry a suit of armor to swap on when I need to run through heavy fire). For the most effective sneaking, is low weight more important than anything else? Is there a threshold below which armor weight doesn't affect Sneak?

Example: I have a character with 95% Sneak. Am I better off (ignore the Hei Gui suit for now):

A: Using Recon Armor (+5% sneak, but 20 lbs of weight)
B: Wearing a Vault Suit or running around in my skivvies (0-2 lbs of weight)

Ideally, I'd like to see something like (these figures are pulled out of thin air):

* -1 Sneak per lb over 10 lb of worn armor
* -10 Sneak when using PipBoy light
* -20 Sneak when using PipBoy radio
* +10 Sneak in darkness/at night
* -10 Sneak within two hours of noon

etc. --Anonymous 19:00, 28 January 2009 (UTC)

The GECK wiki has a discussion page concerning detection. Turns out this is extremely similar, if not identical, to the detection calculations made in Oblivion (makes sense seeing as the two games use the same engine). The TES Construction Set wiki outlines each of the variables a bit better; that article is here. The similarity in game engines makes me thing that "fSneakBootWeightBase" and "fSneakBootWeightMult" are dependent on the weight of your armor since Fallout does not have separate boots (they're part of your armor "outfit"). So, armor/equipment weight doesn't seem to modify character sheet skill levels at all, but rather an internal calculation made by the engine, though your Sneak skill also affects this check. I can't really make sense of the calculation, though, so I'm not sure about charting anything out. Mons farrar 08:25, 22 February 2009 (UTC)

I'm fairly sure even though you have the 25/50/75/100 thresholds, each point does make a difference on how easy it is to unlock. The lockpicks break less often, and you don't have to be as accurate. For instance, an average lock is easier to pick with a level

Sneak Degrees

As Lockpicking and Science is Sneak leveled in 'degrees'? I mean 25, then 50, then again 75, and finally 100? Using this as a start, having 25 is the same as 49?

I'm fairly sure even though you have the 25/50/75/100 thresholds, each point does make a difference on how easy it is to unlock. The lockpicks break less often, and you don't have to be as accurate. For instance, an average lock is easier to pick with a skill level of 73 than with a skill level of 53. I'm not completely sure. Ethervagabond (talk) 07:43, July 6, 2013 (UTC)

Going back to weapons drawn, it means a sniper rifle would be a really bad choice and a chinese pistol should fits better for a sneaking player? Exactly how does this works? size, weight?

Is there any information on GECK about that?

How does Sneak skill affect pickpocketing?

It seems like stealing is only a matter of whether I'm being observed?

Does my sneak skill affect the odds I'll be caught pickpocketing, assuming I'm hidden during the attempt?

It does. I remember trying to pickpocket when my Sneak was around 20, and I was caught virtually every time. It's at 100 now, and I can do it much more easily than I could early on. It just shifts the odds on whether you'll be caught during the attempt. --Turbine2k5 16:09, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

starting level

Does anyone know calculation for the initial level for this skill? If so, post it here. Fat Man Spoon 16:08, 26 April 2009 (UTC)

It depends on your Agility. Look at that page

killing with no hate

is it possable to kill someone in a city(i'll pick rivet city as an example)without the people turing hostale toward?

  • if you leave the town and wait a couple of days, they forget about you.

Reverse-pickpocket a grenade of any kind (preferably frag as i has a smaller blast radius) and make sure its live then stay hidden for a while until everyone turns freindly which they will if you REMAIN hidden. This method is effective also for crowd control, just implant somthing like a plasma grenade or bottlecap mine as they have very large damaging radius effective for super mutant conversations aswell... :) - Bio Enhancment 411 19:24, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

+100 sneak?

is it possible, if you have a sneak skill of 100, to further increase it by reading the book for it, the Chinese secret service book? Will that work with any other skill?24.214.188.20 06:13, 27 May 2009 (UTC)≤←−÷−→≥24.214.188.20 06:13, 27 May 2009 (UTC) (except S.P.E.C.I.A.L.)

No you can not increase your skill points above 100 through any method. This includes skill books, stat items, and bobbleheads. The game will however keep track of your true total, so if some condition reduces your skill it will subtract it from your true total. For example say you have 100 in stealth, read two books, and found a bobblehead. Your actual total would be 112 (or 114 with comprehension). During normal game play the game considers you to have an effect skill rating of 100 and it will display 100 on your stats page. Now if something happens to you which gives you a condition that reduces your stealth skill, by say 10 points, the game subtracts that from your true total of 112, and thus you are left with 102. So even though you have a condition reducing your skill points for stealth your true total is still 102 and thus you maintain the effective level of 100. Hope that makes sense. You can also increase your effective stealth level by using the Stealth Boy and Chinese Stealth Suit. These create stealth fields which will stack with your stealth skill. Livingston 07:16, 30 May 2009 (UTC) ==
Hmm. So assuming I've a Sneak skill of 100 and Silent Running, is there any point in equipping the Chinese Stealth Armor at all instead of, say, a T-51b Power Armor, considering the maxed-out skill can't be pushed any higher by any means, and that the aforementioned perk removes any Sneak-related, weight-based penalties? Or is the stealth suit good enough to keep my sneaking efficiency at 100% independently of light conditions and other, less known factors? It's a shame they had to use a convoluted "Stealth Field" mechanic instead of just saying +XX to Sneak. It's hard to measure that damn uninformative +5 bonus. :P --Shadow86 03:32, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Ahh, but wearing it negates light modifyers. Meaning you could walk down a street in broad daylight. Spoon 03:33, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
Interesting. What else can normally hamper your sneaking ability? The only thing that comes to mind, ignoring weight (as Silent Running makes that a non-issue), is maybe crippled limbs, given AGI penalties. More importantly, is there any console command that can be used to check your current sneaking efficiency, taking all factors into account? --Shadow86 03:38, 17 August 2009 (UTC)
I don't know about either of those. Sorry. Spoon 03:39, 17 August 2009 (UTC)

Sneak improves speed?

That is the claim of this page (and was once the claim of the agility page). Is there any proof of said claim?

Nope its just agility that improves speed, i have a char with 10 agility that can outrun dogs. - Bio Enhancment 411 19:27, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Can someone with PC *Please* use the console to set AG to 1 and run the length of a long, preferably straight, bridge, time it, and repeat w/ 10 AG? At least we could know if it makes a significant difference or not... Maybe there's a formula for speed based on AG and weight carried/armor... 68.192.9.90 23:38, September 8, 2009 (UTC)Platypus1130

Pickpocketing

Does sneak have any effect on pickpocketing success? I dont think so. I have had characters with 100 sneak attempting to steal small items and I have the same rate of success as if I attempt the same thing with a new character at the start of the game. 67.172.16.255 13:58, 8 July 2009 (UTC)

It does effect pick pocketing success..but sometimes it just depends on your luck not the S.P.E.C.I.A.L skill but you get my drift. -hopefully-... Salty Demon 19:35, 27 August 2009 (UTC)

Flashing [Danger] warning?

Just from my anecdotal experiences playing the game, it seems like the flashing DANGER means the enemy has line of site to you, where a solid DANGER just means they know you're there. 99.6.39.6 19:03, September 2, 2009 (UTC)

    Agreeed. That makes two.

I get this loads (i'm mainly a sneak Char) basiclly it means they know the stuff is missing but they don't know why, How they can take back the stuff is beyond me (i even moved away once to about 10 feet and a rivit city gaurd still got the stuff back). Pip-Boy light

In the article, it mentions that the 'pip-boy light' affects sneaking ability if it is switched on. What is the pip-boy light, and how does one activate/deactivate it? Marshmallow2166 21:46, December 25, 2009 (UTC)

PipBoy light is a kind of a flashlight, depending on what console you're on, you turn it on differently. On XBox 360 just hold down B for few seconds Setimir92 06:19, December 26, 2009 (UTC)

is player level a factor?

I got sneak up to 40 right away, and can't sneak worth crap at level 2, but that should be quite respectable when not moving, but still enemies see me from long distances away in the darkness and I can't pickpocket anyone. Am I imagining a level based difference or not?

>40 isn't really that high, and I would say the difference between say a skill of 20, 40, 60 or 80 would be more or less exponential. Moreover, if you really want to sneak, you're going to have to move very slowly (i.e. don't push the left stick all the way forward) until you can get Silent Running.

Lose all stolen items?

I noticed that while I was running around stealing things I may have been caught once, but not until later I noticed I had lost the La Longue Carabine, which I had stolen from Sterling. Do you lose all your stolen items when you're caught? And if so where do they go? The original owner?

Fallout

I recently acquired one of the three-in-one game packs, and have been enjoying Fallout 1. however, since the game lacks anything approaching a tutorial, and there is no game manual (at least not in the version I bought) I have no idea how to use the sneak skill, so if any veterans can shed some light on this little mystery, it would be greatly appreciated. (I would also appreciate a little guide on how not to get murdered by radscorpions in random encounters)--Katikar 16:20, July 21, 2011 (UTC)

I am in no way a veteran but I'll help! And i bought one to and there should be one on the CD! Look there is a red button on the interface close to the center, click it and a list should appear there you should find every thing you need ^^ (Stealth, Lockpick, Scurity) And about the Radscorpions... You just need to get some better stuff from a near by town and do some quests! There is a Greate Gude on the Wiki Just Look for "The Ultimate Fallout Guide" You'll find it if you enter the Fallout Portal! Have fun with Fallout one!^^ Terrorblades - This is recorded live at 19:44, July 22, 2011 (UTC)

Bushes

They do not block line of sight or assist stealth in anyway, this is clearly seen by trying to use one to avoid detection. Any attempt to re-add the false info will be removed. Mictlantecuhtli 15:06, August 11, 2011 (UTC)

Your claim that bushes do not block line of sight is absolutely wrong. Bushes DO block line of sight: in a situation when there is a bush on the line of sight between PC and a target, V.A.T.S. chance to land an aimed shot would read 0%. Therefore hiding in bushes does affect sneaking, which I noticed. I suggest you do experimenting, before claiming that something is wrong and abusing revert. --Slider2k 15:58, August 11, 2011 (UTC)
I take my words back. After further testing looks like it only affects V.A.T.S. targeting, not sneaking. --Slider2k 07:50, August 12, 2011 (UTC)
The simple confusion here is line of sight. This term is not actually relevant to sneak, as sneak is not affected by line of sight. Sneak is affected by proximity, PipBoy light, noise etc. User:AvatarUser talk:Avatar 17:44, August 12, 2011 (UTC)
Why, line of sight is important for sneak. Whether an enemy sees a player or not makes a big difference. --Slider2k 18:14, August 12, 2011 (UTC)--
Your chance to hit through a bush is only 0% because you do not have VATS accuracy assist perks, I tested this thoroughly. With sniper, hobbler, etc you will have a reduced chance to hit but never 0%. With concentrate fire, firing through a bush produces hits once the % gets high enough.
