Question

As for the appearance of Ol' Painless in the chest in Muddy Rudders -- when is the random event set? The first time you walk into the bar? Every time you walk into the bar? Whenever you open the chest? I've done the save-reload approach and I've never found the rifle for any of the conditions mentioned above. —Preceding comment was unsigned. Mary

I edited this - it should be Rosie, shouldn't it? There's no Mary in the Republic of Dave, afaik. I linked Rosie and Dave as well, but Bob leads to a disambiguation page, and I'm not fluent enough in wiki to change it, so I didn't. 208.97.121.178 20:59, 28 November 2008 (UTC)

Nice catch. I added a link for Bob, too. --Mike | Contrib 11:33, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

No spread?

According to the article, Ol' Painless has 0 spread.

I just did some in-game testing and this weapons certainly does NOT have 0 spread.

Can someone else test it out too and record their findings? 24.186.43.182 07:08, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

Are you testing it in VATS? cuz 95% is 95% --AshRandom 23:20, 31 December 2008 (UTC)

I'm was under the impression that the "spread" referred to FPS mode, not VATS. It wouldn't really make sense for it to refer to VATS, because, like u said, 95% is 95%. So when shooting in FPS mode I notice that it doesn't always hit the same spot. What I did to test it was aim at the edge of a concrete wall. If all the bullets went EXACTLY where I was aiming, then all of them should hit the wall, and after every shot I should see the the small "puff" of dust/debris. Sometimes, though, there would be no puff of dust, because the bullet would miss the wall and go past it completely. This would be easily explained by weapon spread NOT being 0.24.186.43.182 20:45, 2 January 2009 (UTC)

Well, you might be onto something, I'm getting the same results here (xbox360). --AshRandom 22:09, 2 January 2009 (UTC)
The zero spread of Ol' Painless only applies if you have level 100 in the Small guns skill. Any lower than that and you will experience more or less spread. This "spread-mechanic" applies to every kind of gun, from shotgun to sniper rifle, and Ol' Painless is no exception. 78.69.122.16 17:21, 4 July 2009 (UTC)

Odd kills with this weapon

I've made some rather interesting kill shots with this particular weapon (Ghouls/humans flying across the room, Yao Gui's (sp?) doing backflips when shot in the head), is this an isolated occurence? 72.226.139.220 04:28, 10 January 2009 (UTC)

Game physics seem to be setup in such a way that when you splatter a limb, it imparts less momentum. Since painless is a relatively low damage weapon it gets slightly less amputations and slightly more "hollywood knockdowns". Its a hollywood knockdown because in real life no bullet ever makes a person fly-backwards. The more powerful the bullet, the more likely it will pass right through, or in this case, comically amputate a limb. If you want to see more creatures flying backwards, shoot for the chest, it can't be amputated, so you almost always get the flying-backwards knockdown effect. Gun vanished

Pickpocketed a scavenger, he took the .32 bullets back and Ol Painless vanished. Wasn't on his corpse.

On mine, Ol' Painless just disappeared from my inventory completely, and the Kneecapper as well, maybe it was because I stole them? It happens i failed to picpocket a guard in rivet and he took all my keys. XD--Atlas Lied! 17:10, 4 July 2009 (UTC) I had it happen with me for both the Ol' Painless and the Vampire Edge with Knick Knack. I'm guessing that it's a flaw if the AI; the game has them taken any "stolen" items even if they weren't from him. Luckily, they were both in his store and I just bought them back. I just wonder if this is a bug or bad AI.--KnightNapier 18:57, September 19, 2009 (UTC)

Not in Smiling Jack's Locker

I just checked Smiling Jack's Locker, and Ol'Painless isn't in there. Perhaps someone was thinking of The Terrible Shotgun.

It's a glitch that happens at random. Mr.Wolf 20:53, 9 August 2009 (UTC)

Gone

I was south of Vault 108 when I shot a raider with Ol' painless. I switched to Xuanlong to kill a deathclaw. After I killed it I went back to equip Ol' painless and it was gone. Just disapeared from my inventory. WTF! It was one of my favorites. AND, to make it worse, I saved right before trying to switch back to Ol' painless so I cant get it back. I gotta use regular hunting rifles now. I'm so... regular.--Chipgambino 03:40, October 13, 2009 (UTC)

Same thing happened to me, though in a different location. I had just finished Blood ties, since I wanted the Hematophage Perk. So I left, then decided I wanted some cool gear, and Vance's overcoat. So I turned back around and killed that guard outside (Andy?), and went in. I went to pull out ol' Painless, since it was my basic fallback gun, and I love to use it, when it was gone, along with my axe from PL. I was pissed. But, this was remedied today, makign me very happy. I killed all of Daniel Littlehorn's secretaries and went out into the scrapyard to find Human Hunters, and killed them. One of them was carrying an ol' painless in near 0 condition. So now I have my gun back. (Note, the Axe and Ol' Painless were in the bottom left and Bottom right of my hotkeys, respectively) Kale Nekona 00:40, February 17, 2010 (UTC)

That's kinda bizarre. I would have originally suggested that it may have been shot out of your hand or something, but this might just be because of a glitch, this kinda stuff happens to unique weapons sometimes. On the plus side, there are rifles that are way better than Ol' Painless. Normal Lever-Action Rifles, the Backwater Rifle, and Lincoln's Repeater are all superior rifles that you can get your hands on (assuming you have point lookout for the lever-action and backwater). --Clean Up 20:37, February 18, 2010 (UTC)

I know it's bizarre, but It got me the weapon back, so I"m not about to complain. And I know it's not the strongest rifle in the game, I just prefer it. DOn't get me wrong, Lincoln's Repeater and the Backwater Rifle are two of my main weapons, but Ol' Painless is the most reliable gun in the game once you have 100 small guns.Kale Nekona 00:09, February 21, 2010 (UTC)

My O' Painless disappeared while I was fighting a Behemoth. I was switching to the Overkill Gun and shot at it. With the Ol' Painless keyed in the bottom slot, it wasn't there! :(. User_AreYouGoingToEatThatNuke%3F_Game_image_4028.gif - NuclearWhip Blab 00:12, February 21, 2010 (UTC)

No Karma Loss

I discovered a way to get Ol' Painless without incurring a loss in karma. It doesn't involve Dogmeat. (Dogmeat wouldn't work anyway as he doesn't take owned items.) What you'll have to do is go to nearby Chaste Acres Dairy Farm or Grisly Diner and lure a raider to the Republic of Dave. It's very tricky, and it's can be difficult to get them to follow you at certain areas where they will want to turn back or will see other things to attack. Solve this by firing at them a few times with a weak weapon or killing what they're attacking. Now, once they're inside the republic, they will want to exit for some reason. Instead of luring them, just run inside the capitol building, throw some .32 shells into the safe, and run back outside. If the raider is inside the walls of republic at this point, run back into the capitol building and run into Dave's office. The only problems are is that the residents will fight back against the raider, so it is best done at night and after you have removed Dave from his republic. It can be very long, arduous, and frustrating, but I managed to do it. (Took, maybe, an hour.) If anyone else approves, I'll add it to the article. TearsOfBlood 03:35, March 26, 2010 (UTC)
