Outside original encounter

Can Malcolm Holmes be found anywhere outside of his original appearance? Ragepyro 16:05, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

I met him right when I got out the New Vegas Medical Clinic.(rushed there at level 1 for int implant) I have a save just before I go outside but I have no idea to "videotape" for proof.--68.100.64.165 02:30, November 4, 2010 (UTC)

Expand Quest Information

Could someone expand on this quest and treasure mentioned in this entry and in the Sasparilla Star Bottle Cap entry? Due to a hilarious combination of me fast-traveling to Primm just before triggering this encounter, and good old Malcolm and a mine spawning at the same point... Merchant?

According to the wiki page he is a merchant that sells weapons, apparel, and aid? can someone confirm this because ive never been able to trade with him before... --Massacring Wolf 02:59, November 6, 2010 (UTC)

I've been able to initiate trade with him briefly, he doesn't have anything more than an average understocked merchant does, nor many more caps. As soon as he is done speaking with you try and open a dialogue before he walks away, you might get the option. --Saltysea 15:30, December 5, 2010 (UTC)

Can He Appear Anywhere?

I just completed That Lucky Old Sun and immediatly after speaking with Fantastic for my reward, he run up to me whilst still in the building. Can he appear anywhere or is this just another location? just appeared to me at the top of the helios one tower just as i switched the power on

No idea, he actually appeared at the top of the tower in Helios One. Gave me a good 
Laugh, I guess he spawns randomly.

I don't know when the above note was written, but it seems that he can appear anywhere, I just had him come up to me in the Nipton Town Hall while I was getting jumped by legion dogsMrSuperHappy (talk) 16:41, October 4, 2015 (UTC)

Doesn't appear

I have some fourteen sunset sasparilla star caps, and I don't believe I've encountered this man. Is this normal? Zarts 06:48, November 9, 2010 (UTC)

It's very possible that he spawned near your location, but then got attacked and killed before he actually reached you. Timzamp 00:06, October 4, 2011 (UTC)

It seems to me that about 1 in-game day and he appears...what I do is collect the star bottle cap from either the devil's gullet or jeans skydiving shack...then complete by the campfire with Sunny, but before seeing Trudy, I do the unmarked Barton Thorn trick quest, then after killing Barton, I fast travel to Goodsprings and finish by the campfire by seeing Trudy. Then,(if you are siding w/ Goodsprings), go to meet Ringo at the gas station...do that back and forth talk with him and agree to round up Sunny..etc. After that it should be 11pm-1pm-ish. GO to the TRAILER behind the saloon/general store...there is a bed, a sensor module, and a Meeting People skill mag. When your there sleep until about 1pm or a few hours longer, whatever, when you wake or as you sleep the timer might interupt and OUTSIDE the trailer Malcome Holmes will run up and do his whole shpeel. Note: sometimes Trudy sleeps in the trailer in which case your boned and gotta reload so save just before you sleep and be ready to reload if what I said didn't happen. Sometimes it screws me and he doesn't appear but after a few re-loads he showed up...another time he glitched into the side of the trailer and can't do his speech! Also corrected by a re-loaded save. This approach has regularly worked for my NEW characters in the start of the game 8/10 times as far has success rate. Good luck!(Not2shabbyBABY (talk) 20:46, October 31, 2013 (UTC))

I have added a bugs section to the article and mentioned this problem. He hasn't appeared for me on my last 3-4 playthroughs. I've also played on Xbox as well as PS3, but I'm wondering if anyone can confirm this on PC. dbbolton ^(talk) 20:11, July 24, 2014 (UTC)

He Steals your Stuff

This dude picks your pockets... and killing him doesn't get your stuff back is there a way i can get my stolen stuff back?

You must've gotten caught pick pocketing him then. Whenever you get caught stealing (from anyone) stolen items are removed from your inventory. Also the items completely vanish therefore you can't simply kill the npc back for it (and yes any npc can do this). Its one of those things that no one ever notices because we all quicksave/reload upon failed steal attempts. Anyway, tough break.

How many star caps are needed before he appears?

The page says 'a few', any definate number that triggers him? Thanks.

I got him after finding my second star cap

He's appeared to me after getting only 1 star cap. If you have already collected multiple star caps, use the wait function to wait several days. Malcolm should spawn a few steps away from you, walk up, and initiate conversation. Epsilon616 03:44, June 9, 2011 (UTC)

W/ cook-cook

When fighting cook-cook for a bounty, Malcolm seemed to come out of nowhere and attacked cook-cook, albeit unsuccessfully, seeing as he died right after getting set on fire. Is this supposed to happen and has anyone else had this happen?

he isn't FORMER star cap collector, he still is

His quote- "Nah, I gave it up years ago. Too dangerous. And even if I did still collect them, I'd tell you the same. There's people out there so mad with the idea of treasure that they'll strangers just on the suspicion that they have some of the caps"

That and fact he has 6 star bottle caps on him. Proof that he isn't former star collector, he's still active.

Just because he stopped actively collecting more doesn't mean he'll just automatically toss the ones he has away. He can very well just be keeping them as a momento. And the italicized sentence doesn't really have to infer anything. ^Message 15:58, August 19, 2012 (UTC)

And once again, that doesn't automatically mean that he is still collecting just because he said 'And even if I did' because that phrase isn't always indicative of doing the opposite and can be used even if people aren't doing it. ^Message 19:32, August 19, 2012 (UTC)

Well if he stopped collecting star caps because it was "too dangerous" to have star caps, why would he still be carrying those 6 star caps around wherever he goes? I just think it's much more accurate to state that he is still active, and a liar. Eddo36 (talk) 02:18, August 20, 2012 (UTC)

For one thing, it's not like he has them pinned to his lapels for the whole world to see and know that he has them. For another, a person is also more than likely to get attacked just traversing the wasteland as it is. They don't bring in that much trouble unless you openly advertise having them. ^Message 02:21, August 20, 2012 (UTC)

I'm just saying that if you had to bet on it, after reviewing all the evidence (him having 6 caps on him after saying he retired because it was "too dangerous" to carry them around) and even admitting that he himself is a liar, what would you bet on- he retired or is liar and active? I used to collect wargaming miniatures. I no longer collect them, but I still retain my old collection. Does that make me a collector, still? No. If he was still actively collecting, I'm sure he'd have a lot more than 6!
