Actually, I'm pretty sure that "La Longue Carabine" actually translates to "The Long Carbine", since the french word for "rifle" is "fusile" while "carbine" becomes "carabine". -- 13:02, October 20, 2010 (UTC)

Unless you're a native French speaker, we'll go with what Google Translate says, which is "The Long Rifle". --Kris User Hola 14:18, October 20, 2010 (UTC)
I am a native French speaker. In French, except in technical military parlance, a "carabine" is a rifle. A "fusil" is an unrifled (i.e. smoothbore) gun. A 12 gauge shotgun is called a "fusil calibre 12". We use "carabine" for both long rifles and shortened "cavalry" rifles. "La longue carabine", as used in the last of the Mohicans, is actually a musket-length weapon. (Longrifle is actually the name of the rifled musket used in early America). I think the google translation was correct and it should be "the long rifle" in English. Also, a long carbine is somewhat contradictory. 06:46, January 19, 2011 (UTC)

Given that a carbine is, for all intents and purposes, a shortened rifle, I think we should change it to "The Long Carbine." Google translate could have simply gone La=The, Longue=Long, Carabine=Carbine-->Rifle.

And in the movie, "the last of the mohicans," when the words "la longue carabine" are spoken the English subtitles translate it to "the long rifle." I support the above comment since the comment is from a native frnch-speaker. I would trust them above any google translator any day of the week :D

Obtaining? Edit

Has anyone been able to successfully reverse-pickpocket Corporal Sterling to obtain this weapon? If so, what weapon did you replace it with?

I have done it, and you don't need to replace it with anything per se, if you just remove the ammo it will be in his inventory. And despite what someone has said, he doesn't catch you every time. I had to try 20 times, with stealth boy, to pickpocket it away, but I did eventually get it. If you want to be nice you can give him another lever action like a trail carbine or a brush gun. I gave him a trail carbine with scope- even though NPCs don't use mods, it just felt weird to take away his scoped repeater and give him an unscoped one. Also, note that the rest of first recon that has hunting rifles have no scopes either- remember, NPCs don't use mods. Bitter Root has a sniper rifle though.--Resplendant Securitron 22:53, October 29, 2010 (UTC)
I did it!!, I was wearing a Wasteland Wanderer Outfit, a Hockey Mask and in weapons I only had nothing but a ballistic fist and a cowboy repeater. Though, I have a sneak of 100 and a used a stealthboy. Got his ammo first then enter to a jail next to the group, got out, and pickpocket it from him. I didn't reverse pickpocket the cowboy repeater I had for him, or anything, just took it after waiting till my stealthboy wear out (in a fraction of second, luck of course, I pushed the X button just when the sound of the stealthboy wearing of started). Note that they were all at Camp Forlon Hope. I did the first part (pickpocket the ammo) something like 10-12 times, then saved, then ffor the part of the rifle itself, it took me something like 22-24 times (I count them). just reload and reload a saved game...
I haven't managed to do this without Stealth Boy though (my sneak isn't 100). If you don't want to reverse pickpocket him, the other way to be 'nice' and give him another weapon is during the Driver Nephi part of the Three Card Bounty quest. Just drop a weapon next to him and he will pick it up once you lure fiends to where he is.

You can also damage the weapon while it's on Sterlings back until it doesn't have any value any more. I did that and I got the weapon in one go (no hostility or karma loss).

I'm rather curious how you could specifically damage someone's weapon without any hostility. (unless you just mean the hostility died down after you laid low, in which case the statement is very misleading)
Bushwhacker2k (talk) 00:29, October 18, 2014 (UTC)

I did something similar to the above. While performing the 3 Card Bounty quest and going after Driver Nephi, you're presented with the option of using the first recon team as support. Talk to Lt. Gorobets and request their help. The whole team will then proceed to the Samson rock crushing plant where they will take up sniper positions. At this point you can get near Sterling, target La Longue Carabine in V.A.T.S. and shoot it out of his hands. At this point grab it off the ground REALLY fast (the whole 1st recon team will turn hostile and start shooting at you) and hotfoot it out of there. I headed south along the freeway. Sterling will pursue you the whole way, the others will not. As soon as you get enough distance from Sterling to allow fast travel, head to Novac, the Lucky 38, wherever and sleep for 3 days. Fast travel back to the Rock crushing plant and Sterling, along with the 1st recon team will have ceased being hostile. Note that La Longue will be at 0% condition though. --RomeoX1000

I obtained it in Camp Forlorn Hope command tent. Punched Sterling once to make him (and everybody else in the tent) hostile and take out his gun. Then I VATSed the rifle out of his hands and picked it up from the floor. I quickly ran outside without returning fire and everyone was cool about it - even the guys back in the command tent who were shooting at me two seconds ago! No karma loss, no NCR infamy, just a kickass rifle! --Hairysteed (talk) 16:06, February 22, 2013 (UTC)

If you steal it from Sterling then you should reverse-pickpocket at least 1,500 caps (the value of the rifle) into his inventory as compensation. That would be the right thing to do. -- 13:06, August 14, 2014 (UTC)

Mysteriously obtained weapon? Edit

So, I was just walking along the road near where the Mysterious Stranger's son is (The guy with the Mysterious Revolver) and I heard some gunshots, so I walk to where i hear them coming from and I see Betsy, and a few other 1st recon guys walking, they were fighting some carazons and radscorpions, Sterling dead on the ground. Looted him and the gun was there, no negative karma, no rangers attacking.

If you finished 3 card bounty, 1st recon gets deployed to Camp Forlorn hope. They probably got jumped by the bugs along the way and poor old Sterling didn't make it. At least he died a Hero, right?--Resplendant Securitron 22:55, October 29, 2010 (UTC)

Repair problem Edit

I am not able to repair the weapon using cowboy repeaters. Is it due to my low repair skill ability (65) or do I need to have the jury rigging perk to do so? Additionaly I couldn't help but to notice the discussion about the name translation. Well, being a native french, I can assure you it should be The long Carbine. 07:59, November 19, 2010 (UTC) Elitios 07:59, November 19, 2010 (UTC)

Repair skill in New Vegas does not work in the same fashion as in Fallout 3. It effects how much item hp will be increased by an individual repair, rather than effecting the maximum condition an item can be repaired to. I've never personally bothered to obtain this weapon, but it cannot be lack of repair skill that is causing this issue. However, getting the Jury Rigging perk would allow you to repair it with a very wide array of weapons.Rhomb 09:08, November 24, 2010 (UTC)

Camp Forlorn hope Edit

Really, if your sneak skill is anywhere below 60-70, pickpocket this gun from him before you do 3 card bounty, otherwise, it'll take a bloody long time to get the gun when/ if he reaches forlorn hope. It took me 10mins to get the ammo, and i never got the gun without hostile action, i had a stealth boy and 55 sneak. So instead i gave up and put a grenade in his pants and he died. Luckily, there was no rep loss only karma loss and the whole squad got crippled. took me around 40mins to get the gun.--Adam Sizzler 10:24, January 20, 2011 (UTC)

It is easier to steal it from Camp Forlorn Hope than Camp McCarren Edit

Because the whole 1st Recon will become stationary at Camp Forlorn Hope, you don't need to wait Sterling running around and Camp Forlorn Hope has MANY barrels which you can grab and place them around the whole group, forming a "Temporary Cover" for stealing stuffs. It is much easier to steal the rifle and their 1st recon berets from Canp Forloen Hope. It just cause me around 10 mins to steal their berets and the rifle. I don't even need stealth boy and I only got 70 sneak.

Accuracy Edit

La Longue Carabine's spread is 0.2 and a Cowboy Repeater's spread is 0.4, that makes the statement that a Cowboy Repeater is more accurate false.

Check again, you missed a 0 out. User avatar tagUser Avatar talk 22:32, March 22, 2011 (UTC)

The name is wrong? Edit

Pardon me if I'm wrong, because I've only been learning French at school for about 10 weeks now, but isn't the name wrong? Doesn't the adjective come AFTER the noun, instead of before it? (whups forgot to signature) Samiam22 12:20, April 20, 2011 (UTC)

In real french, yes. This rifle, on the other hand, has been named La Longue Carabine by its owner. Not neccesarily "The longe rifle". Scarface11235 11:23, April 20, 2011 (UTC)

Not really. It can go either way, depending on the adjective, the noun, and even the effect you want to give to the sentence.

Because "La Longue Carabine" is a proper noun (i.e. the name of his gun) "Longue" is permitted to go before the word "Carabine." Otherwise, usually adjectives go after nouns in French. Paulyb01 (talk) 00:20, March 19, 2015 (UTC)

Rifle. Edit

The statement about the rifles size is actually false.

It's actually a Henry Repeater, with a 21 inch length barrel at the very least. You can tell by the top ejection port for the casings, and the side mounted scope.

If you drop the Cowboy repeater and La Longue Carabine side by side, you can see the difference in size, that the Carabine is actually longer.

Even though this is just a game it does explain it's increased damage and accuracy. 01:36, May 17, 2011 (UTC)

No longer pickpocketable Edit

This weapon does not appear to be able to be stolen from Sterling after he goes to Camp Forlorn Hope (unsure if this is the case beforehand, when he resides at Camp McCarran). Whether this is due to one of the patches or not, I am also unsure. 20:08, August 2, 2011 (UTC)

Weapons are extremely difficult to steal, even with a stealth boy and 100 sneak. It can easily take 50+ reloads if you are unlucky (nothing to do with the Luck attribute). Mictlantecuhtli 20:57, August 2, 2011 (UTC)
My apologies, I should have been more specific - the weapon actually doesn't appear in Sterling's inventory at all. It's immpossible to pickpocket it. Sorry for not being clearer. 21:00, August 2, 2011 (UTC)
None of their weapons will appear while equipped, first take their ammo, go to another area and come back and they'll have unequipped the weapon. Or just give them something better along with some ammo and they'll equip it immediately. UserGreatMara9mm Pistol 21:03, August 2, 2011 (UTC)
Oh, Goddamn. Why didn't I think of doing that, I even read about that trick here before. Now I feel dense. Sorry, guys. 21:47, August 2, 2011 (UTC)
It has been very hard to pickpocket if you try, I have done that countless times with stealth boy and have very little success. The best way is to just attack him using a weak weapon (like the Laser Pistol or .22 Pistol) and shoot it out of his hands, then pick it up quickly and holster your weapon. Just make sure you leave your companions outside.

Good all around weapon. Edit

I think this rifle is largely under appreciated.

Actually this is a good rifle at all ranges, thanks to it's, low spread, larger magazine size, fast shot and reload speed, and 1.5 critical multipler.

A Crit build can have this gun consistently shooting with 47%-52% crit chance per shot, which is actually pretty good for a gun loaded with 11 bullets.

Also the AP cost is the same as the Gobi, which makes it an attractive alternative.

Damage is about 52.5 per shot with Cowboy perk and JSP rounds with a -6 DT bonus. Add a 50% crit chance and it's pretty impressive.

Obtainable without pickpocketing or negative karma Edit

While playing through with my younger brother, he began the quest to collect the bounty on the fiend Driver Nephi where all of the 1st recon guys follow you to help take out driver. we found that during their walk to the rock crushing facility or whatever the entire team will usually pass by a nuka cola truck near the road. it took a few tries to get it just right with sterling in range but by blowing up the truck we were able to kill sterling, and acquire the gun with no negative side effects, the rest of 1st recon even finished the quest as usual.
