Detailed walkthrough[]
While speaking with Quartermaster Mayes in Camp Forlorn Hope, apart from finding a solution to the supply problems as part of Restoring Hope, Mayes states that in order for NCR Command to better allocate supplies to their forces (including those at Forlorn Hope), they need to know the extent of the troop casualties. The easiest way to prove this for field troops is to bring back the fallen's dogtags, a task that Mayes is willing to pay the Courier to carry out.
Afterward, Mayes will pay a rate of 2 caps for every dogtag turned in to him. After turning in a minimum of 15 dogtags, the player character will receive a special reward from Mayes, consisting of 100 bottle caps and 6 beers, but one has the option to refuse the reward and earn good Karma.
Note: In addition to the above reward, if Restoring Hope is also active, for every 5 dogtags turned in, a hidden bonus of +1 morale point is gained, at a maximum of +3 once the 15 minimum is reached, which contributes to the hidden "camp morale" counter that determines the strength and numbers of the Nelson assault team at the end of that quest.
Notes[]
- Mayes will not accept the irradiated NCR dogtags found on the feral trooper ghouls encountered in Camp Searchlight during We Will All Go Together - those are to be given to First Sergeant Astor during that quest.
- The payout from Mayes for turned-in NCR dogtags is comparatively lower than that offered by Aurelius of Phoenix during Arizona Scavenger, who pays 10 bottle caps per dogtag; passing a 35 Barter check will even allow Decanus Severus to accept dogtags in exchange for ammunition and other supplies. The main difference is that the Courier will garner Legion fame for turning them in to Aurelius of Phoenix or Decanus Severus (though this will not incur NCR infamy).
Behind the scenes[]
- As with the side quest Flags of Our Foul-Ups, the quest name is a reference to the 2000 book Flags of Our Fathers by James Bradley and Ron Powers. The book focuses on Bradley's father, John Bradley, and his experiences as a Navy corpsman in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II.
- Originally, this quest was named "Stocking Up" [1]

Quartermaster Hayes wants to ensure the NCR commanders receive a full count of the casualties of the war with the Legion, and to honor the dead. To this end, he requests you locate any Dogtags you find from NCR soldiers found dead on your travels. For example, there are four inside the small hotel in Nipton [4.30]. Of course, if you have the Mister Sandman perk, you can murder NCR troops without a Reputation hit. However; the rewards may not be worth it.
For every Dogtag (not irradiated ones from the Ghouls at Camp Searchlight [6.16]), you receive a small Caps and Fame reward.
• NCR Dogtag • NCR Fame Gained!
• Note: Mayes Request"
