Susan's cabin is a location in the Skyline Valley region of Appalachia in Fallout 76, introduced in the Ghoul Within update. It is the staging area for the seasonal public event The Big Bloom. It is situated on the far eastern edge of Skyline Valley, near the border with the Savage Divide and the Cranberry Bog.

Background[]

This cabin on the southeastern edge of Appalachia is adjacent to a colorful meadow of various types of flowers, including carnal weepers, crystalcups and radlilies.[1][2] Despite the diverse makeup of the flora, the entire meadow acts like a perennial, blossoming in the spring and possessing an enduring lifespan, which is unusual for how many different types of flowers there are.[3] The cabin's occupant is former raider and amateur florist Black-Eyed Susan. Although Susan does not understand the reason for the perennial properties of the meadow, she is okay with not knowing and says that she would not "look a gift horse in the mouth."[3] Although she did not plant the meadow's flowers herself, Susan had already long since developed a hobby of making floral arrangements, and has continued her hobby at this cabin during her retirement from raiding.[4][5]

However, Susan's life at the cabin has changed slightly since the arrival of Magellan from Atlantic City. Despite never meeting Magellan or interacting with the Overgrown, Susan was adversely affected by Magellan's death and the subsequent release of the Overgrown into Appalachia.[6] Magellan's caravan was wiped out close to her cabin by the freed Overgrown, spreading the creatures out across the nearby area and putting her under attack.[5] Susan herself has no idea where the Overgrown came from, and refers to them by a number of colloquial names,[7] though she has seen the remains of Magellan's caravan in the distance and speculates that someone brought them to Appalachia.[8] She has also had issues with honey beasts near the meadow, many of which have taken on floral appearances due to the flowers there.[9][10] The biggest of these honey beasts is Beezlebub, Giant Bee of Yore, whom Susan refers to as her "arch-nemesis."[11] Susan contests Beezlebub's dominance over the meadow, saying that she is the one who owns it, and she wants to kill the "giant monstrous irradiated bee" the next time it appears. Once Beezlebub is defeated and stops besieging her property, Susan plans to make honey cookies to celebrate.[12]

Layout[]

There are two dirt roads that lead up to Susan's cabin and the meadow nearby. Both are accessible from the wilderness area east of Shining Creek Cavern, coming up to the cabin from the south, or the player may approach the cabin from the north to reach its backyard. When approaching from the south, the left path leads to the meadow, and features the remains of Magellan's caravan, including dead brahmin, abandoned carts, and some junk items. The right path leads directly to the cabin itself and is much clearer.

In front of the cabin, there are some small junk walls and several planters where flowers grow, tended to by Black-Eyed Susan. One such planter is placed within the husk of a ruined car, with a hoe sticking out of it. A shovel is found up against a wheelbarrow opposite of the car. An outhouse is situated west of the cabin, and has a chem box inside.

Black-Eyed Susan typically rotates between sitting on the front porch of the cabin and wandering around its immediate exterior. The cabin itself does not have an interior cell and can be freely accessed, as there is no front door. Inside, there is a mounted wolf on the wall to the left, near a table with some potted plants and glowing candles on it. Various junk items are found throughout the cabin, including several vases. On the right, there is a cooking stove next to a shelf with some more junk items and cooking components, as well as two wood piles. In the back left corner of the cabin is Susan's bed, next to a bookshelf that ahs a gramophone on top of it; this gramophone is what plays the music heard during The Big Bloom. A mounted antler display has been repurposed to feature flowers above Susan's bed. Across from the bed, there is another table with a Sewing machine on top of it, and a planter hanging from the ceiling directly above it.

Using the door to exit out the back side of the cabin, there is a tinker's workbench against a wall added onto the back of the cabin via an additional ceiling. Nearby, one can use the set of stairs against the side of the cabin to access its roof, this is where the weed killer used during The Big Bloom can be taken from a basket on the roof. Another set of wooden walkways lead to the northeastern rocks, where a patio table and some chairs have been set up. Further northeast of these rocks, past a dirt trail, there is an abandoned campsite with a tent and two skeletons. Another flower-filled planter is found in a rusted truck behind the cabin, as well.

The meadow is found southwest of the cabin, filled with colorful carnal weepers, crystalcups and radlilies. During The Big Bloom, the meadow and the surrounding trails are littered with landmines, but this is not the case when the event is inactive. A rock formation to the west has a large hole in; although not accessible by the player, it is where Beezlebub, Giant Bee of Yore emerges from during the event, and is surrounded by beehives and skeletons. On top of the rock formation, the corpse of Magellan can be found next to a black briefcase.

  1. Vault 76 dweller: "What do these flowers of yours look like?"
Black-Eyed Susan: "Now that's an easy one! I need Carnal Weepers, Crystalcups, and Radlilies. Not a soot flower more! Carnal Weepers are bright red and look almost like a bleeding, gaping maw. Morbidly delightful! If you've ever seen a tulip, then you know what a Crystalcup is shaped like. Of course, Crystalcups have their distinctive translucent blue color! As for the Radlilies...well, imagine a lily flower that's been drawn all over with a yellow highlighter!"
    (Black-Eyed Susan's dialogue)
  2. Vault 76 dweller: "[Start Event] Sure, can do."
Black-Eyed Susan: "How wonderful! I can't thank you enough! Now, I need some Carnal Weepers, some Crystalcups, and some Radlilies! You can leave the flowers in my basket. Some of the pollinators may be a bit angry that you're stumbling through their home uninvited. Like those damn bees. Of course, you'll also have to fight off the plant people. They're a bit ornery. Good luck out there! Oh, and uh, please watch your step."
    (Black-Eyed Susan's dialogue)
  3. 3.0 3.1 Vault 76 dweller: "How did this meadow get here in the first place?"
Black-Eyed Susan: "Well, that I'm not so sure about, sweetheart. I only stumbled across it recently. I don't know who planted the flowers, or when. It's the oddest thing. Some flowers are perennials, which means they bloom each spring and live an awfully long time. Kind of like me. This whole meadow acts like a perennial! Which is awfully strange, considering it houses so many different types of flowers. It comes back every year, with the flowers beginning to bloom in the spring. I don't understand it, but I certainly won't look a gift horse in the mouth."
    (Black-Eyed Susan's dialogue)
  4. Vault 76 dweller: "This is ridiculous. Have you looked around? Why would anyone waste their time picking flowers?!"
Black-Eyed Susan: "Why, excuse me! If you were my grandchild I'd have you choking on a bar of soap! Ah hem, I mean, I'm retired, dearie! My days of slitting throats and crocheting sweaters out of the entrails of traveling merchants are long gone. Instead, I decided to pursue my hobby of creating floral arrangements full time."
    (Black-Eyed Susan's dialogue)
  5. 5.0 5.1 Vault 76 dweller: "You look like you could use some help."
Oh, why thank you, dearie! It does warm my heart to see there's still some kind souls in Appalachia. You see, I fancy myself a bit of an amateur florist, and this meadow here is filled to the brim with flowers. Problem is, these awfully mean leafy hooligans have overrun it! And quite frankly, I'm too young to die. I tried littering some handy landmines across the meadow to wipe them out, but it's barely made a dent in their numbers! Do you think you and your friends here could help me pick some flowers?"
    (Black-Eyed Susan's dialogue)
  6. Magellan's log 3
  7. Vault 76 dweller: "[Atlantic City] Leafy hooligans? That sounds a lot like the Overgrown."
Black-Eyed Susan: "Overgrown? Why, that sounds awfully like my grandson Tyler when he hit his growth spurt! *chuckles* I haven't heard any murmurings of Overgrown, perhaps you've mistaken them with something else? All I know is, they're a huge nuisance!"
    (Black-Eyed Susan's dialogue)
  8. Vault 76 dweller: "How did the Overgrown end up in Appalachia?"
Black-Eyed Susan: "Overgrown...? Oh, you mean those plant hooligans? I have no idea. This whole time I thought they were some leftover superweapon the commies made. Some kind of high-tech killer shrubbery. They don't have any buckets and bolts though. Strange. I don't know if it matters much, but I saw a broken down caravan a little ways from here. No one's come back to claim it. Maybe someone brought them here? I've certainly never seen them in Appalachia before."
    (Black-Eyed Susan's dialogue)
  9. Black-Eyed Susan: "Sometimes I like to imagine the honeybeasts are commies. Makes them a lot easier to kill."
    (Black-Eyed Susan's dialogue)
  10. Physical appearance of beezlebabies.
  11. Black-Eyed Susan: "That'll show those giant weeds not to mess with Susan! Oh, I mean, well done, sweetheart! I- *buzzing sound* Oh, he's back. My arch-nemesis! Beezlebub! You won't get my flowers, you audacious bug!"
    (Black-Eyed Susan's dialogue)
  12. Vault 76 dweller: "Beezlebub...?"
Black-Eyed Susan: "Oh, yes. The most horrible, vile honeybeast in all of Appalachia. He thinks he owns this meadow just because he's a giant monstrous irradiated bee. Well, I'll tell you who owns this meadow. Me. I do. If I see that bee one more time, I'll gut him with his own stinger. You mark my words, sweetheart. And then, of course, I'll bake a batch of honey cookies!"
    (Black-Eyed Susan's dialogue)
