Super mutant is a term referring to humanoid mutants created by exposing a regular human to a variety of the Forced Evolutionary Virus (FEV). The resulting hulking mutants typically possess exceptional strength, endurance, resistance or immunity to disease and radiation, as well as modified intelligence.
Background[]
During a corporate executive meeting held at a Vault-Tec building in Los Angeles, Leon Von Felden, representing West Tek, proposed using one of Vault-Tec's vaults to conduct an experiment on illegal immigrants to create a "super mutant" soldier.[1]
Super mutants were created by West Tek using the Forced Evolutionary Virus.[2] In January 7, 2077, FEV research was transferred to the Mariposa Military Base in California,[2] to continue under the lead of Leon Von Felden and Robert Anderson. The team then created the FEV-2 strain, able to create powerful super soldiers, exhibiting superior physical prowess, resistance to combat damage, aging and disease, as well as a negligible loss of intelligence and inevitable infertility.[3] Several other FEV strains were being tested in other facilities, such as Vault 87 near Washington, DC[4] and the West Tek research center in Appalachia.[5]
After the Great War, various populations of super mutants have appeared in different parts of the former United States, as a result of both pre-War and post-War experiments with the FEV.
Fallout TV series[]
The Target[]
While working at the Enclave research colony, Siggi Wilzig sees a large, wrinkled green hand sticking out of a sheet on a gurney pushed by two Enclave scientists.
The Trap[]
A super mutant is depicted on one of the wanted posters at the headquarters of the Govermint.
Appearances[]
In the Fallout TV series, a super mutant corpse appears only in the second episode, "The Target," while a drawing of a super mutant appears in "The Trap." Plans to create super mutant soldiers are also mentioned in a flashback in "The Beginning."
Behind the scenes[]
The super mutant depicted on the wanted poster looks more similar to super mutants originating from The Commonwealth and Appalachia in Fallout 4 and Fallout 76 than to super mutants created at Mariposa Military Base, the only subtype previously seen in New California in Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout: New Vegas.
