Detailed walkthrough[]
When first approaching the north gate of the New Vegas Strip after passing through Freeside, the Courier will be stopped by a local named Old Ben. He advises them not to approach the gate without first talking to the Securitron acting as gatekeeper to be authorized for access; shortly after talking to Ben, a Freeside thug will try just that and gets shot and/or blown up to emphasize his point.
Upon setting foot inside the guarded entryway, the gatekeeper will approach the player character, demanding that they submit to a credit check of 2,000 caps; asking about it reveals that the Strip's owner, Mr. House wants to ensure that anyone entering his domain is coming to spend money on the casinos first and foremost. There are several options for getting past the gatekeeper and entering the Strip:
- Agree to the credit check. Choosing this option requires the player character to have a minimum amount of 2,000 caps in the inventory. Note: passing the credit check does not require paying 2,000 caps, only to have them in the inventory at the moment of selecting the agreement dialogue option.
- Pass an 80 Science skill check to use a verbal command to trick the robot's protocols into granting authorization without needing to pass the credit check.
- Present a passport. There is no "official" way to acquire a passport; instead, one must go and speak with Ralph of Mick & Ralph's, starting the quest Papers, Please. In this quest, Ralph only agrees to hand over a counterfeit passport by either passing a 50 Speech check or using the favor granted by the King of the Kings by completing G.I. Blues and asking him to help the Courier get onto the Strip.
Once the gatekeeper has provided authorization, the Strip north gate can be entered at will for the rest of the game without needing to pass a credit check again. Entering the Strip for the first time after completing this quest will then lead into the faction quest arc The House Always Wins.
Behind the scenes[]
In law enforcement, a strip search is conducted to ensure a suspect does not have any hidden weapons or contraband when entering a restricted area, where either they or an officer will remove some or all potentially concealing articles of clothing.
