Strategic Air Command (SAC) was a United States Armed Forces command responsible for the maintenance of the United States nuclear arsenal.

Background[]

Although rendered extinct by the Great War, with its headquarters permanently offline by 2241,[1] automated SAC manufacturing facilities and automated cargobots and vertibots continued to manufacture and deliver nuclear keycards to Appalachia, after the Appalachian Automated Launch System was tricked by Enclave President Thomas Eckhart into believing a land invasion of the United States mainland was underway. These convoys would then be intercepted by Enclave troops and later Vault Dwellers for use in the region's automated nuclear launch silos.[2]

Appearances[]

The Strategic Air Command is mentioned in Fallout 2 and Fallout 76.[3]

Behind the scenes[]

Strategic Air Command was a real-world division of the Department of Defense commanded by the United States Air Force (USAF) Major Command (MAJCOM). It was disbanded in 1992, after the end of the Cold War, with its responsibilities divided among other commands of the United States military. Its successor is USSTRATCOM (United States Strategic Command), which continues to handle the U.S. nuclear triad of nuclear bombers, SLBMs, and ICBMs.
