We haven't seen anybody in a while... maybe the monsters have stealth suits too.

The stealth suit Mk II,[1] also called the aural stealth suit by Doctor Mobius and referred to by Doctor Borous as the psychoanalytic cardiac-dampening sneaky stealth suit,[2] is a unique set of medium armor in the Fallout: New Vegas add-on Old World Blues.

Background[]

Created by Big MT researchers in the X-13 research facility using reverse-engineered stealth field technology from captured suits of Chinese stealth armor as a basis, the aural stealth suit was intended as a next-generation, cutting edge infiltration suit to be used in the war effort.[3] After the proof-of-concept suit was completed, work began in earnest on an actual prototype. While the Mark I was merely a standard suit of armor, built to test the validity of the pattern, the Mark II became a unique, computerized platform, combining the best technologies available at Big MT. Before the Great War, research on the Mark II had been unsuccessful in reproducing the stealth field typical of the Chinese model but had many additional elements made functional during its development phase.

The core element of the suit is an automated personality acting as a central control system located in the torso, which controls the built-in medical dispenser capable of injecting Med-X and stimpaks automatically when needed, controlling the heartbeat of the wearer through a specialized cardiac regulator,[4] providing real-time feedback on battlefield conditions, automatically fitting itself to the user's shape and frame[5] and automatically adapts systems to the user's specifications during testing and unlock features as they come online (though due to being left in the testing phase before the War, the control system requires it be put through active scenario tests in X-13), based on an ingenious firmware upgrade created by the researcher Kael.[6] These upgrades are necessary for the user to benefit from the more advanced subsystems, such as gloves coated with a rubberized dampening compound to enhance manual dexterity[7] or advanced servomotor buffers in the leg rigs, allowing for faster sneaking.[8] Along with firmware, the suit also comes equipped with its own subnet for discrete information gathering and transmission during missions.[9]

By 2281, the suit, along with both the X-2 transmitter antenna array and sonic emitter, had become integral to the Think Tank's goal of taking back control of Big MT for themselves from Doctor Mobius. Secretly, Mobius had deliberately instilled the goal of recovering the technologies as a means to enforce the Think Tank's cognitive recursion loop and keep them contained in Big MT, intending to steal them once brought to him in the Forbidden Zone to prevent the Think Tank from realizing that they could be used to reverse the brain extraction process that created lobotomites and acquire new organic bodies to pass through the radar fence.[10][11]

Characteristics[]

While similar to appearance to the assassin suit, the stealth suit Mk II is cleaner and has a luminescent white chest piece with similar white stripes on the back. The suit itself has a built-in medical system that automatically dispenses Med-X and stimpaks. A female-sounding on-board computer narrates the usage and current levels of these items, as well as warning of impending combat situations, reminding the wearer of an active Pip-Boy light, and making offhand comments without prompting. Should the user be poisoned, e.g. by the sting of a cazador, the suit will dispense a stimpak if available and cure the poison. When the user is crippled or enters a combat situation while wearing the suit, the suit will dispense Med-X.

Upgrades[]

The suit can be upgraded in the course of completing the four infiltration tests in the X-13 facility at least once. Bonuses from upgrades are cumulative.

  • Firmware version 1.1 - Adds a bonus of +10 to Sneak (Stacks with the +15 Sneak already on the armor, giving +25 to Sneak).
  • Firmware version 1.2 - Adds a bonus of +1 Perception.
  • Firmware version 1.3 - Adds a bonus of +1 Agility.
  • Firmware version 1.4 - Adds a bonus of +20% to Stealth movement speed.

Locations[]

The armor is initially found in three pieces in the X-13 research facility, one in each of three rooms in the hall just after the front lobby. Once all three have been picked up, the stealth suit will automatically spawn and be added to the inventory.

Notes[]

  • The suit's development went by the codename, Project: Blue Blood.[12]
  • The suit's apparent creation from reverse-engineering the technology of Chinese stealth armor is indicated by the assortment of miscellaneous items found in each of the rooms where the pieces of the suit are acquired. However, while the Chinese armor's headpiece is seen on the mannequins, there is no headpiece attached to the suit or as a separate item.
  • Unlike the prototype medic power armor from Fallout 3, the Med-X dispensed by the stealth suit is regular, addictive Med-X.
  • Stimpaks used by the suit are not affected by Medicine level.
  • In Normal mode, if the wearer's health is low, the suit will continuously administer stimpaks until their health reaches an adequate level. In Hardcore mode, the suit checks to see if there are any restore health effects first; if not, it will administer a stimpak.
  • When unequipping the suit from a companion, it still plays an audio comment as if the person was wearing it.
  • Sometimes if the wearer dies, the suit can be heard desperately trying to pump stimpaks in order to keep the user alive, to no avail.
  • If one kills the robobrains within the facility, the suit may comment on this, stating, "That's a shame. Normally, those units would help defend the facility in case of an attack."
  • The suit's computer tends to be sarcastic in its unprompted remarks, such as when turning on the Pip-Boy light when sneaking, also displaying a mischievous side (e.g. claiming it is time for combat even if there are no (more) enemies).
  • Sometimes, the computer will ask the wearer, "Do you like me?"
  • As it is classified as medium armor, the stealth suit suffers penalties to sneaking and cannot be paired with useful perks like Tunnel Runner Lonesome Road (add-on) and Travel Light, though can be paired with Implant M-5.
  • The voice from the stealth suit MK II is set as male in the G.E.C.K.

Notable quotes[]

Behind the scenes[]

  • The on-board computer is voiced by Qore hostess Veronica Belmont, who also voices Light Switch 01 and 02, and provides the original unaltered voice of Christine Royce.
  • The AI on-board the suit is a reference to many assistant AIs from pop culture, including the AI of the motorcycle in the film Warriors of the Lost World; when the robo-scorpions attack, the computer says "Mean robot bugs! Mean robot bugs!" in the same cadence as the motorcycle says "Bad mothers! Bad mothers!"
  • Early versions of the scripting for the stealth suit Mk II still exist in the resources of Old World Blues, based heavily on the prototype medic power armor from Fallout 3. This includes the use of the special "Suit Med-X" effect specific to the prototype medic power armor, which would have allowed the stealth suit Mk II to apply Med-X without risk of addiction and with the added benefit of temporarily suppressing the negative effects of crippled limbs, as well as the negative effects of many types of addictions.
  • Opening the NVDLC03AuralStealthSuitQuest entry that governs the suit's unique features and dialogue in the GECK reveals that it was intended to have an "Advanced Optics" upgrade, after the v1.4 upgrade run. The Stage check for the v1.4 upgrade bark from the suit is set to 50, and the dialogue line for Advanced Optics is at 100, an invalid entry. Delving into the script file in the Quest data tab also shows that this would have been done in a VR test, likely in the defunct VR room present in the facility, before the entire test was scrapped for unknown reasons.
  • There is another unused script "NVDLC03StealthSuitISFXSCRIPT," which contains what appears to be a "Vision Firmware Upgrade." When the player crouched, it was going to apply 2 ImageSpaceModifiers and play the UIRadioSignalFound sound. Then when the player stands up, it would remove the effects and play the UIRadioSignalLost sound.

Bugs[]

  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 There is a bug where, after the suit auto-applies a stimpak, your health will not increase, keeping your health at the minimum threshold for the damage script. This causes the suit to use a stimpak every time you're injured, as you drop below the scripted HP, burning through stimpaks extremely quickly.[verified]
  • PCPC Before starting the stealth research in X-13, make sure all armor pieces are in your inventory. Starting the run before the pieces are taken may bug the script and result in not getting the armor.[verified]
  • PCPC The stealth suit seems to occasionally glitch out and continuously issue doses of Med-X until the user's supply has been emptied, or until the suit is taken off (Leading to Med-X addiction very quickly).[verified]
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 The suit can administer Med-X anytime the user enters combat or anytime the stealth status changes from [HIDDEN] to [CAUTION], even if no damage has been taken by the player.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 When fully upgraded, it doesn't boost your sneak speed by the said 20%.[verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 In third-person view, rotating to the front side of your character can sometimes cause the head and arms of the player character to disappear, immediately reappearing once the camera returns to the rear.[verified]
