Silas is an aging former fighter with the Rust King's Army, held captive by them in Appalachia in Fallout 76, introduced in the Burning Springs update.

Background[]

Silas became affiliated with the Rust King's Army after tracking down a thief and coming across the Rust Kingdom, where he killed the thief on the floor of the kingdom's arena. This earned Silas the admiration of the Rust King, though he hesitates to share more about his past beyond this.[1] Silas came to enjoy fighting in the arena and developed a reputation as a warrior and arena battler. This granted Silas the nickname of "Dogtooth," and he saw himself as above the other "grunts" in the Rust King's Army.[2]

However, as Silas has grown older, he has lost the respect of the Rust King's Army, who think that Silas has lost his strength and his mind.[3] The Rust King now refers to Silas as a "pitiful old dog",[4] now useless due to his age and arrogance. The Rust King even retrospectively dismisses him as having been "mediocre" in his prime as an arena fighter.[5] Despite this, Silas still sees himself as one of the Rust King's Army,[6] but he is willing to kill anyone who gets in his way, wanting to "show them all" and prove he still has fight left in him.[3][7][8][9] His mixed feelings on the Rust King's Army are complicated by the fact that he truly does miss the thrill of the arena and spectating bloody battles, even if he is now the one being cast aside as a victim of said arena.[10]

Since his dismissal from the Rust King's Army, Silas has been locked in a cage in the arena, awaiting judgment and upsetting him considerably.[11] He shows himself to be extremely paranoid,[12][13] to the point he does not even want to be looked at,[14] not to mention aggressive.[15] He says that he despises "smartasses" with more brains than common sense,[16] but is potentially willing to place a small amount of trust in someone who can get him out of his captivity. All the while, Silas, for the most part, refuses to relent, threatening against any potential betrayals and scoffing at "bleeding hearts,"[17] even as he faces the likelihood of his own demise in the arena he once championed,[18][19] beginning to grow increasingly desperate as he approaches death.[20] With the arrival of a Vault 76 dweller to the arena, the Rust King would see an opportunity to pit the dweller, Silas and Eugene against each other in a unique confrontation.[21][22]

The Rust King: "Yes, he seems like a better choice than that pitiful old dog Silas. I am tired of talking. I was promised entertainment. How's this? Kill Silas, and I will grant you free passage in my land."
    (The Rust King's dialogue)
  5. Vault 76 dweller: "Silas."

  21. Vault 76 dweller: "Have you tested others like you've tested Eugene and I?"
The Rust King: "No. The schemer came to my attention first. When I heard rumors of his wit, I sought a worthy opponent and had my men track him down. I told him to prove to me that his value outweighs that of any member of my army. His pathetic attempts to avoid a fight amused me... for a time. Just as my patience ran thin, you arrived. A skilled warrior from beneath the earth. He must have assumed you'd be easy prey. Ha! It's clear he was a coward from the start."
