Detailed walkthrough

Meet Elder Maxson on the flight deck for your first mission as a Brotherhood Knight after familiarizing yourself with the Prydwen and the crew.

You're to head out to Fort Strong to cleanse it of all hostile super mutant forces and secure the armory which will give the Brotherhood an advantage in the upcoming war.

Step onto the Vertibird and man the minigun. Use this weapon to cut down the super mutant behemoth roaming the grounds (you can also use the minigun to kill any remaining super mutants after it lands) .

Disembark and remove all indicated super mutant threats then enter Fort Strong's armory and exterminate all hostiles on all floors in this location.

Talk to Paladin Danse, who decides to stay and make sure the armory is secure (you can also pass a medium speech check and ask why he hates super mutants so much) before returning to the Prydwen for a reward from Elder Maxson of Vertibird signal grenades.

  • When given the option to do the medium speech check, if you instead decide to outright agree with Danse, you will earn his respect and raise your relationship level instead.
  • If you have already raised Danse's relationship level to the point where he shares his history beforehand, then no speech check will be available. Instead, there will be a dialogue option that refers to said history.

The option to purchase extra signal grenades from Proctor Teagan is unlocked.

Notes

  • If Danse is the player's active companion during this quest, he will automatically be dismissed once the armory is secured and will return to his current home location (the Prydwen by default). He can be re-recruited once the quest is completed.
  • An easy way for the player to clear out the super mutants they encounter is to stay on the mounted minigun even after the Vertibird has landed. Super mutants will start pushing towards the player and they will be easy pickings.
  • Make sure to search around. There's a Covert Operations Manual and a Mini nuke behind a novice locked door, and there are at least 2 other Mini nukes around Fort Strong.
  • It is possible for the vertibird to be shot down by the super mutants. The resulting crash can place the character on land or deep in the water. Typically, the Sole Survivor lives through the crash and can continue the mission.
  • Danse loves it if you agree with him that super mutants should be eliminated. Cait likes it. On the other side, if you disagree Danse will hate it and Cait will dislike it. Other companions may also react to this decision.
  • Cait likes it when you talk to Arthur Maxson to finish the quest, no matter where you take the discussion.

Bugs

  • PCPC Companions, particularly Paladin Danse, may fail to board the Vertibird if the Sole Survivor rides first. To remedy this, it is advisable to order the companion to board the Vertibird first.[verification overdue]
  • PCPC After getting the quest and talking with Elder Maxson the marked Vertibird to take you Fort Strong does not appear. If you quit and reload, it will appear but not allow you to enter. You may need to take the Vertibird on the opposite site down to the ground underneath and back to hopefully be able to use the marked one. Saving and reloading does not resolve the latter issue. This can be solved on the PC using the console, open the console, click on the Vertibird and type activate player. Loading a save from before you first exit The Prydwen can fix this issue on PS4. [verification overdue]
  • Playstation 4Playstation 4 If you ignore the Vertibird because it is not allowing you to enter, you can go on foot to take Fort Strong and complete the quest. However, if you have a companion with you, the companion will remain on the airship flight deck and you cannot talk to her/him/it thereafter. Swapping out companions will always result in the new companion leaving you (wherever you are) and appearing back on the airship flight deck. Quitting and reloading does not work. To resolve, summon a Vertibird using a grenade obtained from Maxson and enter. After landing, the companion should be with you again.[verification overdue]
  • Another bug happens when the player has cleared out the Fort Strong Armory. The next objective is to speak to Paladin Danse. When the player engages Paladin Danse, he immediately attacks. He will take no damage. If the player fast travels to the BOS Airship, the BOS will also attack the player instantly.[verification overdue][platforms tag needed]
  • PCPC Trying to shoot while on the vertibird won't work. The bug actually occurs a bit earlier (not able to display/shoot with weapon) by recruiting paladin danse as your partner. Using the text dialogue to go alone usually fixes this bug.[verification overdue]
  • PCPC After clearing the first section of the Armory, the V.A.N.S. Perk and the quest marker tell you to go outside. Exiting Fort Strong Armory and returning to turn the quest in will not work. You must enter the elevator car in the East corridor to proceed to the larger testing area to finish clearing mutants. You will then be notified with a quest update and Paladin Danse will show up (if not a companion) as you exit this area to comment on the results.[verification overdue]
  • PCPC Sometimes the vertibird will not show up, and your quest marker will tell you to take the vertibird to Boston Airport. Saving and reloading may fix this.[verification overdue]
  • PCPC If you ask Danse to accompany you for this mission then choose your previous companion instead, once securing Fort Strong Danse may spawn on the lower level of Fort Strong as though he were with you all along.[verification overdue]
  • Playstation 4Playstation 4 Sometimes when entering Fort Strong the elevator will be bugged. The elevator will descend upon entering but the doors will not open, trapping the player inside indefinitely. Solution: Restart console and load a save aboard The Prydwen.[verification overdue]
