Sentry bots are robots found in Appalachia.
Background[]
The heaviest class of combat robot in the United States Armed Forces, the sentry bot's singular purpose is to provide security through overwhelming firepower.[1] The sentry bot had become a standard piece of military equipment by at least 2063, with prototypes existing further back.[2] The sentry bot's purpose is to engage the enemy at range with a variety of weapons, including miniguns, Gatling lasers, rocket launchers, and even back-mounted cluster grenade launchers. At the same time, its thick armor and multiple redundant systems allow it to survive extended engagements. It is commonly considered to be one of the most dangerous robots ever created and RobCo Industries' finest fighting robot. Late models are also provided with the ability to self-destruct to prevent the enemy from recovering the robot.[3] Early sentry bot models were issued serial numbers in the SB-#### format (model, then serial), with later models transitioning to the standardized alphanumeric registration in the ABC-###### format.[4]
Characteristics[]
The sentry bot is typically equipped with a missile launcher and minigun. However, it may use alternate weaponry configurations such as dual miniguns or Gatling lasers.
On top of their formidable ranged weaponry, sentry bots have powerful melee attacks and a self-destruct function. Despite their bulky armor and appearance, they are capable of fast movement and traversing rough terrain. In addition, a sentry bot's entire torso is capable of rotating independently of its legs, functioning akin to a turret, and allowing it to move in one direction while shooting in a different direction, against targets in any direction. Sentry bots also use Mecanum wheels that allow it to strafe right and left without having to turn.
Gameplay attributes[]
Sentry bots are some of the most difficult robots encounters - agile, heavily armed and equipped with tremendous firepower. Despite their intimidating strengths, they possess a glaring weakness - overheating. If engaged in combat for too long, they will eventually enter a cooldown period, blasting steam and flames out of vents on their chest and back while exposing dual fusion cores on their rear until they are back to a stable temperature and reboot to resume attacking. Attacks which strike the fusion cores will always deal ×20 damage (alternatively, the fusion cores can always be targeted with V.A.T.S. while having the Concentrated Fire perk equipped).
Upon taking terminal damage, the sentry bot will initiate a self-destruct sequence. After a few seconds, they will explode with the force of a mini nuke, which can cause significant damage to surrounding opponents, and are left charred and blackened. Additionally, the loss of both main weapons will prompt the sentry bot to initialize their self-destruct sequence and charge at their target. Even with their ranged weaponry intact, sentry bots often charge into close combat to deliver powerful blows with their arms.
