What I wouldn't do to get my hands on one of those Enclave vertibirds...

These scribes are members of the Lyons' Brotherhood of Steel in 2277.

Background[]

This section is transcluded from Scribes. To change it, please edit the transcluded page.

Scribes are tasked with creating and keeping records of the technology recovered and used by the Brotherhood and experimenting with new weapons and other useful devices to be used in the field by the knights and paladins. Scribes rarely leave the safety of the Brotherhood bunkers, but they are sometimes called into the field to examine a piece of technology or perform a task beyond the skills of the Brotherhood soldiers.[Non-game 1][Non-game 2] The attitude of many scribes in the Brotherhood can be described as techno-centric. While a great number study history and cultures, the majority of scribes focus their studies on subjects related to the acquisition, repair, or creation of technology.[2][3][4][5] Scribes are also assigned to educate young Brotherhood of Steel members. Their teachings involve the principles of science, including nuclear fusion, chemistry, and combat tactics.[6]

There are three major scribe orders; each order is headed by a high scribe (proctor), designated by the head scribe.[7][8]

  • Order of the Sword is responsible for weapons research and development. Guns, ammunition anything of an offensive nature.[7]
  • Order of the Shield is responsible for defensive research. Power Armor, defensive structures, anything that is intended to protect.[7]
  • Order of the Quill preserves the written knowledge of the ancients, seeking out all manner of books and holotapes.[7]

These scribes specifically fill those aforementioned roles among Lyons' Brotherhood of Steel. Perpetually busy, they have come to idolize Elder Lyons and his direction of the chapter.[9] Once the Enclave exposes themselves to the Capital Wasteland by capturing Project Purity, the scribes come to realize just how technologically advanced the Enclave is compared to the Brotherhood as a whole. They are both excited at the prospect of analyzing new technology, particularly the Vertibirds, and frustrated at their lack of technological development.[10] If interrupted, they will direct the Lone Wanderer to Scribe Jameson,[11] or Elder Lyons when their situation develops.[12] When the Brotherhood is ready to take the fight to the Enclave, they will express patriotic fervor for their victory.[13]

Project Purity scribes[]

Following the Battle of Project Purity, some scribes were also stationed at the Jefferson Memorial to organize and maintain Project Purity beside civilian scientists from Rivet City. These specific scribes are not the most competent of their orders, some having apparently failed their cartography training.[14][15][16][17] They still try to do their best to support Scribe Bigsley, the head of the Brotherhood's effort at Project Purity, who is easily irritable and resentful towards his staff (especially when they make mistakes).[18][19][20][21] This is mostly because he is so overworked and overwhelmed that he is approaching certain nervous breakdown, so any incompetent subordinate is just another source of stress.[22][23][Non-game 3]

Despite Bigsley's moods, his staff have been understanding of the situation, even covering for their boss' more egregious lies.[24][25] When the Water Distribution Network caravans return as scheduled, the scribes ready them for their next trips, trying to process them and the paperwork without disturbing Bigsley too much, hoping to not disappoint him.[26][27][28] The scribes themselves have become wistful of their former positions, believing that they should be doing something "more important." They miss the Citadel and believe the worst thing that could happen to them failing is reassignment.[29]

Bugs[]

PCPC Xbox 360Xbox 360 Killing a scribe will cause only the scribes to turn hostile towards the player, not the paladins. After a few days, the body will disappear and the scribes will become neutral once more. Killing a scribe will still result in losing Karma.[verified]

  1. Fallout 4 Vault Dweller's Survival Guide p.33: "Scribes
Scribes are tasked with cataloging and preserving any information considered valuable to the Brotherhood of Steel. When it comes to combat, Scribes lack the impressive skills and equipment of their front-line comrades.. While they do have access to a small variety of armor and accessories, even the most effective combinations offer very little protection."

  2. Fallout: The Roleplaying Game Rulebook p.384: "Scribes are the recordkeepers and scholars of the Brotherhood of Steel. While they can fight and receive the same basic combat training as any other member, this is not their primary role. Scribes handle the cataloguing, repair, acquisition, and study of any technology that finds its way into the Brotherhood's hands. They sometimes accompany field units if their expertise is required in retrieving or locating an artifact of importance, but most Scribes stay within the base of operations of the chapter."
  3. Fallout 3 Official Game Guide Game of the Year Edition p.95: "Scribe Bigsley
This overworked, underpaid, and unappreciated Brotherhood Scribe has the thankless and overwhelming task of setting up and managing the water distribution. He hasn't slept since the water purifier started working. Lyons wants water to go everywhere. The rest of the Brotherhood resents being sent on deliveries. Bigsley is caught in the middle. He agrees with those who feel they should charge for the water, to let the free market set up the distribution network, but he will follow orders as best he can. He's worked out a deal with Rivet City to use their security force to supplement the Brotherhood escorts of the water caravans. He hopes to soon hand over the entire distribution nightmare to Rivet City. But they seem reluctant and are having trouble with bandits. There is literally a line of acolytes outside his door with various questions, reports, and requests regarding the water distribution. Bigsley is on the verge of a nervous breakdown."
