Underworld was a good start, but we've found an even safer place for us to set up a new place to call home.

Sanders is a ghoul who is found dead in Old Olney underground in Fallout 3.

Background[]

A former follower of Roy Phillips, Sanders parted ways with the ambitious ghoul, believing his plans to settle into Tenpenny Tower were misplaced delusions of grandeur. Instead, he gathered a group of ghouls willing to try and establish a new settlement away from the bigotry of the wasteland, and headed north.[1] Connelly accompanied Sanders, despite his sincere wish to join forces with Phillips and his revolution, rather than roam the northern wastes.[Non-game 1][Non-game 2]

His group settled at Old Olney, surprised to find it empty of raiders. Instead of camping out on the surface, they started building a community in the town's underground, stockpiling food, beer, and other essentials. The odd scratching sound and distant roars were dismissed while Connelly erected makeshift barricades to defend against local wildlife.[Non-game 1]

The ghouls soon discovered that they made a grave error: Olney was abandoned for a reason. That reason quickly descended on the fledgling ghoul community when they tried to expand their underground living space, and knocked down a wall[2] leading directly into a deathclaw nest.[3] The deathclaws attacked immediately, tearing the ghouls limb from limb,[Non-game 2] just as the Lone Wanderer approached their camp while searching for tech necessary to gain an advantage over the Enclave.[4]

Only Kidd and Wint survived the attack, and only because they managed to outrun their fellow ghouls.[5][Non-game 3]

  2. Lone Wanderer: "Why are you down here?"
Wint: "Look, this wasn't how it was supposed to go down. It was a good idea at the time, y'know? Figured we'd try and set ourselves up down here. Just like Underworld, only better. Who's gonna bother a bunch of ghouls living underneath Old Olney, right? So we get down here, we start knockin' some walls down... And the next thing you know we're getting our faces chewed off by Deathclaws."
    (Wint's dialogue)
  3. Lone Wanderer: "I'm not afraid of Deathclaws."
Wint: "Yeah? Well then you're stupid. Where you think they're all comin' from, huh? Goddamn nest down here. Take it from me, kid. You stay down here, you're gonna die. But hey, it's your funeral, right? Me and Kidd, we're getting out of here. Figure the way you came's gotta be pretty clear if you're still alive."
    (Wint's dialogue)

  5. Lone Wanderer: "If there are so many Deathclaws around, how'd you survive?"
Wint: "Heh. We ran faster than the others, that's how. Ain't nothin' honorable about it, but we're still alive and they ain't. I can live with that. Listen, this wasn't my fault, okay? It wasn't my idea to tunnel down here, I just went along with it. But whatever. What's done is done. Me and Kidd, we're getting out of here. You came in that way, that means we can get back out. See ya later, kid."

    "Connelly (deceased):
Connelly was always arguing with Sanders. They should "head west," he told anyone who would listen, and meet up with the Ghoul resistance over at Warrington Station. But Sanders wanted to roam the Northern Wastes. Grudgingly, Connelly accepted this plan, but he knew the area was rife with danger. Upon a discovery of an empty Underground camp below the streets of Old Olney, Connelly began erecting makeshift barricades, just in case of a curious Mole Rat or two. His last memories were being simultaneously torn apart by a Deathclaw, and gurgling "I told you so!" to Sanders."

    "Sanders (deceased):
Sanders knew better than most. He was always telling Roy Phillips his delusions of grandeur were misplaced, and that Ghouls should set up their own settlement, away from those who would seek to destroy their way of life. After gathering a plucky band of like minded souls, Sanders ignored Connelly's whining, and trekked northward to a relatively undisturbed township called Old Olney. Sanders was amazed this place hadn't been settled by Raiders! His crew headed into the maze of sewers and tunnels under Old Olney, and began to set up a makeshift camp. It had everything you could wish for; Food, Beer, a pool table... and an odd scratching sound and distant roaring. This roaring intensified as Sanders suddenly—and violently—discovered his group wasn't the first to settle Old Olney."
  3. Fallout 3 Official Game Guide Game of the Year Edition p.103:
    "Wint:
Wint was part of a group of likemindedIn-game spelling, punctuation and/or grammar Ghouls who decided to forge ahead into unexplored territories under the leadership of Sanders, and set up a new Ghoul Settlement to rival Underworld. One of only two remaining survivors, Wint isn't staying around to watch any more of his friends die. He considers the whole plan an absolute disaster, and would have throttled Sanders himself if the Deathclaws hadn't got to him first."
