“Venture west to the great bog, and within you shall find the mother of all Punga Fruit. She stands taller than a man, and her vines guide our future.”— Jimson
The sacred bog is a location in Point Lookout in 2277, accessible by the sacred bog entrance.
Layout[]
On the westernmost side of the map, the entrance leads to a swamp consisting of a winding path populated with swamplurks, mirelurk hunters and swamplurk queens, all of which are found along the path towards the Mother Punga, a very large variant of the punga plant. Up to 35 regular punga plants are located around the Mother Punga plant.[1][Non-game 1]
Related quests[]
- Walking with Spirits: Experiencing the hallucinations brought on by the Mother Punga is a rite of passage, allowing one to find out more information about the local tribals for Desmond Lockheart.[Non-game 2]
Notes[]
- Directly north of the sacred bog entrance is a burned out house with some loot.
- The water inside the sacred bog has low levels of radiation. Drinking from most bodies of water inside the bog will heal 20 HP while only causing an increase of one unit of radiation. The exception is the body of water immediately prior to the Mother Punga plant, which has a normal level of radiation.
- Upon entering this location, fast travel is not available until exit from the sacred bog entrance has been achieved.
- The sacred bog has its own world map.
- The Lone Wanderer will still have hallucinations of Moira Brown's and Elder Lyons' dead bodies as well as Mister Break, even if the characters have not been met beforehand.
Appearances[]
The sacred bog appears in the Fallout 3 add-on Point Lookout.
Behind the scenes[]
- Developers who worked on the creation of the sacred bog include Megan Sawyer,[Non-game 3] Jesse Tucker and Philip Nelson. According to Joel Burgess, much of the hallucination sequence was implemented by either Jesse or Philip based on a concept by Joel.[Non-game 4]
- The "buffer" cell of the sacred bog entrance was created due to engine limitations preventing direct travel from worldspace to worldspace.[Non-game 5]
Bugs[]
- There are reports of unusually frequent crashes in this area. Upon investigating in the G.E.C.K., there is an activator in this cell that can cause some PCs to crash. There is a third party fix available.[verified]
- There is a possible bug that will allow one to remain under the swamp water just outside of the sacred bog entrance without affecting oxygen levels.[verified]
- There is a bug that if you have any temporary follower with you it will crash the game.[verified]

Kenneth Vigue: "Yeah, this is a pretty unsettling fever dream. Who's idea was this and is everything okay at home?"
Joel Burgess: "I think it was mine? [laughter]"
Nathan Purkeypile: "Yeah, I don't think it was mine, so... surprisingly."
Joel Burgess: "Oh yeah, there's the bonesaw, right? So this is him like, going into your skull. Like, that's the thing is, these things are happening to you for real and then in your sort of fevered state, you're interpreting them... and so yeah, that's what all... gah. [laughter] And then of course like Jesse, right? One of our level designers implemented all this stuff, or maybe Phil did the hallucination? There's definitely some Phil vibes in here, like the Schmault-Tec is very Phil."

Nathan Purkeypile: "I mean, isn't it, Joel, that we couldn't load worldspace to worldspace? So we had to go interior to worldspace. [...] For some totally random tech reason."
