Ryan Johnson is a developer who works at Bethesda Game Studios on Fallout 76 as a level designer, first listed in the updated credits with the Expeditions: The Pitt update.

Career[]

Work on the Fallout series[]

On Fallout 76, Johnson worked on the design of some of the new player experience locations with Expeditions: Atlantic City's Boardwalk Paradise update, including Forward Station Tango,[1] Settler's Ridge,[2] and the Coop.[3] He also was the level designer on the flooded city center, introduced with Expeditions: Atlantic City part two, America's Playground.[4] Johnson contributed to level design for the Ghoul Within update, including the old Danielson cabin.[5] For the Burning Springs update, Johnson designed the towns of Athens and Albany, among other locations.[6]

Modding work[]

At the time of his hiring at Bethesda, Johnson was listed as the lead technical advisor on "Fallout: London" (2024), an upcoming total conversion mod for Fallout 4. However, Johnson had left his position on "Fallout: London" a few months prior to starting with Bethesda as an associate level designer.[7]

Before working on "Fallout: London," Johnson worked for many years on a similar smaller mod project, "Fallout: Coos Bay" (also a mod for Fallout 4). This was based on his home town in Oregon. This project was handed over to other team members when Johnson left for Bethesda. This project has no announced release date. Johnson would go on to name drop Coos Bay in a note titled Just my luck!, which was introduced in America's Playground. Coos Bay is described as "soggy" and "flooded," much like the flooded city center he worked on.

  5. Ropiequet (Ryan Johnson) on Reddit: "Hey there! I'm the level designer who made the cabin. I wanted to add in the cellar, but ended up not doing so because of how late I added it in :/
It would have required a small interior cell, so instead I placed the carpet over where it should be. So maybe there is secretly a hatch down there? Maybe there IS somebody in my fruit cellar!
Glad you enjoyed it otherwise! :) we had a lot of fun making this update! "
  6. Ryan Johnson on LinkedIn (archived): "Just a little over a week has passed since we released one of 76's biggest additions, and all of the positive feedback has been amazing! I had the honor of creating the towns of Athens and Albany, and seeing folks running around having a blast is a feeling beyond words! I went into it with the mindset of "if a game company was to make my home town, I'd want them to get as many of those little details that really make it home". Seeing the locals spot them has been the best part.
It was such a great year working on this with not only our awesome normal crew, but teaming up with the talented folks at Double11 to make a patch together! Easily the best year yet!"
